Wildfires burning in Hawaii

My hairdresser was telling me that she was there once when they were testing the alarm. It was incredibly loud. Fire moves very fast but some more might have escaped.

So you're saying that have 'fire' alarms ? Along with tsunami and hurricane ?

How would they know the difference ? Are they different 'tones' ?

Again, if the folks there hear either a tsunami or hurricane alarm are very likely to run away from the sea ..... toward the fire.

Surpassed the Paradise camp fire. I can't imagine that the toll will be the 1000 unaccounted for. That would be worse than what it is. I don't know how much trouble people are having getting in touch with others. And then there are always some that were isolated and don't have anyone to contact.

I remember hearing an account regarding the Paradise camp fire. Someone called 911 seeing smoke. They were told it was across the valley, they are on it and nothing to worry about. Know how that one played out.

For places that have them, it’s usually an emergency alarm. I don’t know if they have different tones. There was a time we used to be told to listen to the emergency broadcasting station.

Now saying that the local water systems/infrastructure failed in part because of the power outages/power needed to get it there. Also mentioned things like valves melted. Fire fighters on scene and remaining homeowners trying to save their house lost water when fighting the fires.

One homeowner said he almost had the fire out/saved house before water stopped.

A retired Marine took a job as a Forestry and Wildlife Firefighter in Hawaii after he left the military. He has been asking me to come out and stay at his place while he’s fighting fires in Maui. I keep putting him off because I’m just not up to traveling so far right now. I really like being in Hawaii, especially Kauai and Oahu. I told him I may be out next weekend. I have to think about it.

My biggest worry is what about my dog? I’m not putting her in the baggage hold and she’s too big to take onboard. I might be able to talk my doctor into giving me a letter to get her a paper that she’s traveling as my emotional support dog, but I don’t know if that will fly. I don’t even know what’s all involved getting her a pass.

How is the missing person report going over there?
My friend told me that they are looking for about 12-1500 unaccounted for people. Jared, my friend, said that they found 3 bodies in a home that appeared the people were overcome by smoke and couldn't get out in time before the fire overcame them. If you have never been involved in a fire, I can personally tell you that smoke is your greatest threat .

At first, it doesn't seem all that bad, but then your eyes water that bad, you can't see anything, including finding the doorway and then you become very tired and try to lay down, but that's a mistake. You have to keep moving and get away from the smoke before it fills your lungs. The smoke burns your throat and chokes you like someone has their hand around your neck and you can't breath.

If you have or were ever treated for PTSD, you should be able to get a certification from your psychiatrist or psychologist that would allow the dog to be onboard the plane with you, so long as she is gentle towards others. If I were you, single and a free soul, I would go and be with your friend. What a better get-away then being in Hawaii?

There is also a company that will transport your dog to Hawaii for a fee. The dog will be handled by professionals and treated with kindness. A couple in my church used this service a few years ago when they went to Hawaii and they had nothing, but good things to say about them. I’ll see if I can get the name of the company,

I called the fellow that had his dog shipped to Hawaii and then Australia. He said he used a company called Starwood Pet Services. He said it cost him almost $4000. You will need to get the dog vaccinated with their list of vaccines and there are other restrictions, but he said he was happy with the services they provided. They treated the dog very well and fed the dog on time and also exercised the dog while in flight. I don’t know if you want to spend all that, but there may be other companies that will do it for less. He did say that you must be sure to meet the plane at the airport. Good luck.
