Steinem and her ilk told my mother she was a failure for being a stay-at-home-Mom...and made millions preaching this garbage. I have nothing to apologize for in my above statements.

Really? I was a member of the National Organization for Women in my town and every woman in it was a stay-at-home mom. We were the ones who had time to meet with school boards and try to get them to change their career day program so that girls could find out they could be engineers and doctors as well as housewives and nurses. It was always about choice.

Before I got married I tried to go to the local business school and learn drafting. My father had already taught me how to use a T-square and design floor plans, I was told I only men could take those classes, I could choose between typing and short hand. I tried to get a job in a bank and I was told they never hired women, because, "men didn't trust women with their money." I worked in a department store for years and when the manager of my department retired they hired a 16 year old boy to be our boss, because "men won't take orders from women."

Here's the dictionary definition of a feminist. "A feminist is someone who supports equal rights for women. "

If you're not a feminist then you think women shouldn't have the same rights under our constitution.

like all people she has flaws - and like all people I probably don't agree with everything she said. I doubt there is any person who I agree with everything they said.

I do however agree with the goals of the feminist movement most of which are taken for granted these days.

and sure, we could look back with rose coloured glasses t o some suppossed utopia where everything was perfect before women went t o work - but that is a false premise - 1. it wasnt perfect for everyone at all and 2. lots of women did work - they just didnt have same pay or recognition or opportunities as men.

I think most women want to be at home with their youngsters...not 'stuck'...and not 'forever'.

and they can. Feminist gains like maternity leave help them do so

and then they can go back to work when they want to.

and when they do go back they are not paid less than men for doing same job.

I guess I'm a feminist too. I was raised by a Mother who was never allowed to work in a job which utilized or recognized her true abilities. During my working years I was in a position that enabled me to open doors for women in whom I saw great potential. Men too.

Geez, I hate to see the fighting.....I do not know about Ms. Gloria and I am not going to look it up.

The only things we should have been worried about was paying the bills, taking care of the children. Yes, I am glad women do have the choice, are able to go to school if they want a career. Truth, is I did not have a career, so to speak, but I did have a job. I was good at it, I loved it up until a certain point.

You know that video, all over the internet, some mogul and his mistress. I did not know about my bosses doing this at first but when I found out I lost all respect for the companies and management. I wanted to be proud of my job, I could not knowing what was happening.

I left two jobs because this behavior was allowed. I liked the jobs but if you find something against your morals, it is time to go.

I agree. Feminism isn't about man hating, it is about equal opportunity.

What was once called day care is now early education. I volunteer at a child care centre run by my church. I also have two great grandchildren who have been in child care and I am very impressed by how much the littlies know and understand.

Children who do not have the experience of day care are actually disadvantaged when they start school. Apart from educational advancement they also miss out on developing social skills.

I stayed home with all three of my kids until they were in school. It was something we valued and we sacrificed to make it happen. Back then there were old-fashioned nursery schools that you could send your kids to once they were 2.5 years old and potty trained and they would go for two hours a day two or three days a week. That’s how my kids developed their social skills and many other kids.

If both parents work full-time, there is very little time at the end of the day to have much quality time with your children. By the time you make and eat dinner, bathe them it’s time for their bedtime since little kids go to bed early. Some people obviously have no choice, but to go to work and some people don’t have the patience to be home with their kids all day.

Once the kids are in school all day having a two income family is much easier. I’m glad that women have a lot more choices now than in the past. Once the kids are in school all day I can’t imagine how boring it would be to still be in the home. My mom was born in 1920 and once we were all in school, she went back to work full-time.

ForgetGloria for a few and think about this : when I married the first time the only paper my name was on was the marrige certificate....not the car, truck, any of the 3 house "we" bought, not on the checking account, not the saving account, nothing. I was educated in medicine but not in men. I was not allowed to work, or randomly go shopping, which brings us to the topic of every afternoon when he got home from work he would check the odometer on the vehicle left home to see if I'd left home. I was given 20 dollars a week for groceries...need I say more?

When he finally shot himself in the head one day, I learned he left nothing to me, that I had no property rights at all.

These types of situations are why women rose up on their hind legs.

Both human adult genders have an inner being social communication need to exercise, but with women as the center of family, that has generally evolved to be more prominent at an emotional level. Workplace jobs where people work as a team and with others, or with group community activities, exercises adult skills every one of us should have opportunity to experience in order to be within society, cooperative and useful. Since civilizations arose, people have fulfilled many working rolls that required good language interpersonal communication skills. Given this last century plus, many people have liberated their lives into glorious realm of life purposes only now possible with science and technology. And that has been true with both careers, activities, and hobbies giving purpose and value to our lives.

Thus, those women that arose in this era chasing such opportunities and dreams, ought to have just as much chance to pursue those worthwhile paths in their lives. And many women have done and accomplished so, and to society's credit, they have celebrated their successes that shows YES working can possibly be a big positive.

But then what about the many more without such new era dreams and ambitions? For example, those that just want to have a more traditional American family, maybe similar to the one they group up in even. That can work to. And both, in plenty of circumstances, may not work out, depending on the myriad situations and complexities of rapidly evolving modern era life.

My mum worked part time until my sister and I were in high school, then had a full time job. She gave that up when I had my first baby because Hubby and I both needed to work to be able to pay off a block of land and the have a house built on it. She sacrificed for me and my sister and in a similar way I helped my daughter with her four children. Now she is helping her daughters.

I think young parents today have a much harder time raising a family. Without help from their parents it is even harder.

That's exactly how I feel about it. Some women have no choice but to work while their children are very young, but I think very young children are happiest with their mommy at home. It would have broken my heart to drop off my two, three or four year old with a bunch of strangers for 9 hours a day. He had plenty of socialization through the neighborhood kids and was always at the top of his class from kindergarten through college so I don't think I held him back.

My mom was like yours. After she raised us she got a good civil service job, she had been valedictorian of her high-school and was finally using her math brain. I wouldn't have dreamed of asking her to quit and raise my child for me.

When I was a young child ( early 1970's) my mother had her own accounts / CC ( her name only) and ran a business besides the ones she shared with dad. I guess I am not old enough and most women younger do not know a time when that happened.
Perhaps it was specific states? specific banks? or situations?

What year or time frame did women on this forum experience only having accounts if husband name on it?
