World’s largest cruise ship labeled ‘monstrosity’ ahead of maiden voyage

I went on a Caribbean cruise once a yr, 8 of them, until my lady cruise buddy died 20 months ago. Most were 3,000 passenger size, all Princess. I'd never go on this new thing.
I'm the same as you. I enjoy cruising on the smaller, usually older, ships. There's plenty to do on board, usually great food and many dining options and it's a great way to see numerous places in a matter of a few days. I went on a Royal Caribbean 'Mega Ship' once. Never again. Too many people & too much constant noise.

It's interesting though that building these monstrosities seems to be the direction ship building is going now. There must be millions of people who enjoy going on these mega ships. They wouldn't be building them otherwise.

Beasts like this should be turned into hospitals or artificial reefs. Of course it’d be best if they never were.

Why bother. Just live in a city with a theme park.
I already do!

I predict it will be a big success. People will want to go on it just so they can say they did.
You can be sure of that! These companies don't invest that kind of money on a whim. They have extensive research that tells them ... this is the direction to move in. I'd bet you couldn't book a cabin on this one for a year or more after it's maiden voyage.

The Icon Of The Seas is the biggest cruise ship-for now. They're probably already building something twice as big. I guess if you're into an adult Disneyworld on water, well, here it is. From what little I know about cruise ships, is that they really aren't that overly expensive, but off ship tours are very expensive. And tourist attractions are deluged with thousands of tourists, waiting in huge lines, who all turn up between 10AM and 4 PM.

We went n on a cruise ship ONCE, and it was more than enough. I'm amazed that folks really enjoy the crowds and constant contact (unless you stay locked in your cabin) with people that you don't know and in many cases don't like.

I see nothing wrong with this new creation for folks who enjoy cruises. Just bigger and probably busier. I'll bet they'll have more applicants than they can handle when she's ready to go.

Right, they’ve analyzed every penny invested.

They just didn't build this willy nilly. Much of what they are adding or installing are probably the result of customer and vip surveys/requests. Yes some actually want and desire that.

I read the comments- most of them were NOT good! I too, would NEVER!!!
I prefer a sailboat and would never just cruise for no reason on something like that. Beach is a better get-away. I pity the poor cities that have that call in to port. YIKES! At least, in Maine, they limit the number of people who can come ashore each day.

The ship can carry up to 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew and boasts the largest cabin at sea, a three-storey 'townhouse' that sleeps eight and has a 35 ft red slide running from top to bottom.

'If you leave your shoes in the kitchen and you are in the bedroom, it's a pretty fun way to retrieve them,' one source said.

A private lift then returns you to the third-floor master bedroom.

Twenty decks high, Icon Of The Seas is 1,198 ft long with a gross tonnage of 250,800 – five times the size of the Titanic.

Critics have described it as 'a garish monstrosity' but a spokesman for the cruise liner said it has smashed sales records and is almost fully booked for January, when it will embark from Miami on four cruises around the Caribbean.

An insider said: 'This is the future. People can sneer but the sales figures show this is precisely what tourists want. Our lines have been ringing non-stop since she went on sea trials last week.

'People have been saving hard for the holiday of a lifetime – and this is it.'

It also promises to be one of the most eco-friendly vessels ever built.

It is powered by liquified natural gas which runs six engines, generating 67,500 kW (90,520 hp) of power.

Royal Caribbean chief executive Michael Bayley said: 'Looking at the energy and time that has gone into this ship, it's mind-blowing.'

Already Icon Of The Seas, the world's biggest cruise ship which took to the open ocean for the first time last week, has reportedly racked up an all-too-real £5 million in advance sales before her maiden voyage in January.

With the world's largest onboard waterpark – including the first free-fall slide at sea with a 66-degree incline drop – plus 40 bars and restaurants, a 55 ft indoor waterfall, mini-golf course and ice rink, the £1.5 billion Royal Caribbean vessel is 10 ft longer than the current record-holder, Wonder Of The Seas.

'Can this even be real?' one stunned observer wrote on social media, as pictures emerged for the first time of the pink and green spaghetti-like slides on the Thrill Island upper deck.

Designed to appeal to a younger crowd, there is also a zip-line 154 ft above the ocean, a rock-climbing wall, obstacle course, arcade and a karaoke bar.

Floating theme park--NO WAY Jose.

I have been on 8 cruises, the smaller the ship the better.
