I LOVE See’s candy (if you’ve heard of it, you know why) and I am also a social worker at heart. I am looking at stating a non profit chocolate shop in a retirement community, where the residents volunteer their time, and all profits go to a senior in need (payment for nursing home care).
Pros? Cons? Love?!?!
Thank you for considering 🙂

See's candy is such a sentimental icon for me. Raised in California, it was sold everywhere.
Grandma kept a variety box in her dresser or closet. When I would spend the nights there
she would have me come sit beside her on the bed and let me pick One piece and we'd eat together.
When I moved away I couldn't find it anywhere, what a heartbreak that was.
I think many in my age bracket and had See's for special occasions would love this idea.

Yes, certain foods remind us of special memories we shared with others. The same with some songs. When a song comes on the radio, at times I will think about what I was doing or where I was years ago. It's cool 😎

Are you planning for See’s to donate the chocolate? Is that why you mention them?
How will you pick the recipient?

Many eldercare facilities have a specific fund for resident seniors who have run out of money. I think it's more effective to just donate directly to such a fund, which is what we do.

Whether for profit or non profit, location is everything. Such a specialized shop would need to be located in a high foot-traffic area and generally RE is expensive in such locations. Speaking for myself we spend a high percentage of our income on incidentals, but I wouldn't drive out of my way to buy See's chocolates even for a good cause. It would have to be near some place I was already going to (combining errands, for example; or visiting someone).

I don't think you can count on visitors to an eldercare facility to necessarily be buyers. A few might, but not everyone or even a majority of visitors.

I do enjoy some of See's chocolates, but in general unless you can find a facility to donate space, arrange for insurance, have a list of seniors who are able to physically do inventory, stock, sell, and perform accounting/taxes, I can't see how your idea would be feasible without a considerable investment in time and effort.

I could be wrong, however, and your goal is certainly laudable! Good luck with the idea and hopefully someone here can help you brainstorm.

It sounds like a huge venture with a great deal of risk.

I would encourage you to stick a toe in the water with a much smaller investment/risk.

Round up a group of willing volunteers and try a smaller grassroots effort to raise a bit of money to help make the lives of some local nursing home residents a bit brighter.

It shouldn’t take more than a few hundred dollars and a card table to get started.
