When we're all dead and buried will any of it really matter, (to be really morbid for a moment!).
However, between the choices given, "lying on your death bed" will you be thinking of all the money you've spent or maybe of those you've loved, and and made a difference to, and those who have loved you in return and made your life more worthwhile far beyond any amount of money could do?

in order to help out daughter and SIL with finding a home that isn't way outside the city as costs reach over and above a million inside the city.

LOVE, without a doubt! Money buys you a lot of toys and perhaps a lot of misery. Life without love is a pretty miserable way to exist and don't tell me that money will buy love; not real love where you are accepted for what and who you are.

Money can definitely make you happier if you don't have enough to live like you want to, and if you're happy, you're more likely to find love—especially if beforehand you were angry and depressed about your situation. So I would take money.
Then again, at this age, money doesn't really mean that much. Love is much more important.
So, in my younger days, I'd take endless money. Now, endless love, as long as I have a decent place to live.
