You wake up suddenly in the middle of the night by an unknown noise. What would be the scariest sound to hear after waking up?

Sounds horrific! How did you know it was a tornado? What did it sound like? What did you do?
Last night I was awakened by strong winds and rain, so it took me a bit of time to get back to sleep. Checked the weather report but rain was the only thing in the forecast.
Tornado's have a sound all their own. Hard to describe. Most people say it sounds like a train coming through your place. Living in Arkansas, you get used to tornado's. The worst I've seen was the super tuesday tornado of 2008. It was a half mile wide and had smaller tornado's on either fringe. It traveled 122 miles in a straight line and never once zig-zagged like a conventional one. Wiped out about 3/4's of our town. Took this picture of a jeep wedged in the tree across from the fire station, and the other was the local lady's new Humvee. rolled it about a quarter mile into the field.
So, along that line, I guess waking up to hear people or animals screaming in pain would be the worst.

Wow! Glad you thought about rescuing the birds! I haven't seen any birds (or baby birds) fall down in mine.
oh they're usually always in a panic by the time we get to them of course so we have to put a big cloth over the gap to stop them flying around the livingroom covered in dirt from the chimney .. . It's quite funny sometimes because often the bird might have been in the chimney for a whole day or a whole night before it's rescued because we 'll leave it to make it's own way out which often they can do.. but when it's obvious they can't.. we can go outside and see that the parent bird (usually collared doves or wood pigeons) is waiting on the roof for the baby to come out, and it might have been there for hours...🥰

Aside of the sounds of extreme weather, intruding animals, people breaking in, etc. it would be the sound of dripping water. Through my 27 years of living here, multiple pipes haver frozen, and broke, along with water heaters giving up, the will to live, and leaking, When I was hospitalized, during a frigid spell, the power went off and a pipe froze., and burst. It cost $15,000 in repairs. Dripping water scares the hell out of me.

Aww, how cute! We used to have a male canary as our pet for many, many years. We would let him free from the cage every so often and he'd fly around the house. One time, he got caught behind the refrigerator and we couldn't find him. But eventually we did. He avoided the refrigerator after that! He loved to sit on a picture frame in front of the large mirror in the living room, gazing at his image (I guess he thought it was another canary) and sing at the top of his lungs. He was right on pitch. I would play the piano and he'd sing along. I had taped it once. He was amazing. We ended up getting him a white female canary. Unfortunately, she died six months later, and he died shortly after that. We were heartbroken.

What would be the scariest sound to hear after suddenly waking up?

When I was in my mid teens I was home alone and was awoken by the sound of the back door opening. This was about 1 or 2 am and back in the day when people didn't lock their doors at night. I would have to say the scariest sound to hear are slow footsteps coming in your direction and you have no idea who has come into your house or why they are there in the middle of the night. Probably the most scared I have ever been in my life.

That would be scary indeed. One would have to ask themselves "Will I go and check or will I hide under the bed"?
Who was it?

well don't leave us hanging... what was it ?:unsure:

Anyone knocking on the door past midnight. This has only happened once. Two teens whose car broke down. I made them wait on the porch, and called their grandfather. They had been trying to walk home, which was far from where they started. He came and got them. No street lights in the country, so that was dangerous.

I'd be scared if I heard breaking glass (window), a battering ram on my door, or police sirens accompanied by a knock on my door. This has never happened.

I'd be anxious if I heard the tornado watch/warning thing on my phone. Only anxious because I go right into denial --- this won't happen here. But I still take cover.

If I thought a ghost might be there, I would be scared. The one time that happened was when my dog was sleeping with his feet propped up on the fireplace bricks, and he moved in his sleep. But until I figured out what the sound was, I had to force myself to go back to sleep by not thinking about ghosts.

Years ago when I lived in the city I woke up to a strange noise in the wall. I didn't want to wake up my husband so I started walking around the house listening to all the walls. Finally, I opened the basement door and a bird flew out and scared the heck out of me. It seems that the bird had flown through the chimney and landed in the basement. When I opened the door the bird flew around the living room until I opened the front door and it flew out.
After that, I couldn't go back to sleep. I was always afraid of birds.
I'm afraid, for no reason, of birds who are in the house.
