You wake up suddenly in the middle of the night by an unknown noise. What would be the scariest sound to hear after waking up?

To me what would terrify me would be the cat throwing up a furball on the bed.
Nothing gets me moving faster.
Someone should turn that sound into an alarm clock.

well don't leave us hanging... what was it ?

It was a friend from down the street, also mid teens that had been out drinking. He was afraid to go home and catch it from his parents. He wanted to crash at my house because he knew my parents were away. Why he didn't knock I don't know except he was fairly tipsy and probably wasn't thinking straight.

Well, years ago when I was married, my wife & I often went to Las Vegas.
We were out until 3am & we went right to sleep when we got back to our hotel. I put the "Do Not Disturb" sign on the outside of the door.
Around 4am, I hear the door rattling. Then the door opens (no chain back then) & a woman starts walking in - with 3 guys behind her.
My wife woke up & screamed. I rolled off the bed, grabbed my gun from under the bed & rested it on the bed, pointed at the door. The woman yelled, "He's got a f-----g gun!" & all 4 started running down the hall. I called the front desk & they had hotel security grab all 4 of them. Great job, Circus Circus!!!
Later, Las Vegas police told me the woman was a hotel housekeeper & she made extra money letting in burglars with her room keys.
Who knows what else the 3 guys had in mind........

It's sorta funny because before the trip, we discussed leaving our gun at home because I said, "Nevada has a lower crime rate than CA."
She said, "Well, we'll be driving across the desert & ya never know what can happen." (no cell phones back then, no way to call for help).
