You win a trip to a major city in the U.S. but would you go?

We were born and grew up in the US then in 1969 we immigrated to Canada became citizens as soon as possible in 1975. Went back a couple of times to see family, but we will never go back, and it is because of the gun culture. No other country in the world has almost daily mass shootings!
You are a great example of a person who grew up IN the USA, then made a conscious decision to apply to move to Canada, then became Canadian citizens. After living here since 1969, and as citizens since 1975, what changes in the USA have you noticed ? I am assuming that you still have some family living in the USA ? What do they say to you about their day to day life in their State ? JimB.

The difference we see in the US now as opposed to when we were growing up there and living there with our very young children..........We watch the news, and we see so much hate for anything or anyone different. Even the police seem caught up in it, killing young black men as they wish.It gets worse and worse instead of better.

If you invest your winnings, you are liable for tax on any interest.
So after you put your money into a saving account, how long to you have to keep paying tax. There’ll be interest on the interest. That would be a booking pita.

In order to buy the lottery tickets you MUST be a Permanent LEGAL Resident of Canada, so Americans cannot buy lottery tickets in Canada. JimB.

Yes they can. That lottery is specific to Ontario. It’s like the BC lottery system, you have to be in BC. You can’t even purchase online if you’re not physically in the province.

Players outside of participating countries can use an online concierge service to buy Lotto 6/49 tickets. Visit the Lotto Tickets page to find out ...

Many of the very first Million dollar lottery tickets were won by Americans. This wasn’t made widely known.

SF members generally try to not stomp on other countries' flags or their citizens' feelings. I can't be the only American on this thread who wishes you would do the same.
You aren’t the only one. As a non-American I wish that some specific people would stop the US bashing. It’s tedious and rude, imo.

Lordy! .... to read some of these posts above, you would think that when we (Americans) go outside, we have to duck for cover!

The last time I saw a GUN in public was never .... I certainly don't own a gun, and really don't know anyone who does.

Now as an old woman who sometimes has to get up at 2AM, and go outside walking my dog around the area (yes, in the city) .. am I supposed to be scared with all the hyped up media stories? .... I don't have time for that.

....... I prefer to live my life as it really is, not as people preceive it to be .... Sorry to disappoint.

Agreed... it's tiring and discouraging how even a fun post like this turned into the always political gun issue. Same names keep coming up stirring the pot. When I joined here, I didn't think that kind of thing was tolerated. I've lived in a city... and right now live in a place that has more than a little crime although it's not a big area. Know how often I've seen a gun in public? Same as you... never. I'll even go a step further and say that I can't remember a time I've ever even seen a real gun "in person" period. I'm getting weary of tiptoeing around not saying what I want to say just so "the few" don't attack. @JustBonee

I watch the morning game shows and they often give trips to places like NYC as prizes. NYC has been in the news repeatedly for assaults etc. as has been other major cities. Would you go anyway?
Not currently travelling, no money and passport needs renewed. However, it'd depend on where as they're States I refuse to visit due to the animals present, the weather patterns or earthquake prone areas. Sorry, very fussy travellers!

In the UK, savings, prize money etc.. are not taxed, but the interest earned from any savings (no matter what the source) is potentially taxable.
There is an annual allowance of £1000 for basic rate tax payers so in most cases, the interest is tax free. Recently, the interest rate on savings has increased so some people will end up paying tax on the interest less £1k. There are savings accounts called ISA's where you can save up to £20k a year tax free.

If you win a large cash prize, there are probably legitimate ways of avoiding tax on some or any interest.

We didn't exactly "win" a trip to NYC, but DH and I were invited to appear on Donahue some years back. We didn't hesitate for a second...more interested in NYC than being on Donahue, but Donahue was fun.

We knew we'd only be there a few days so asked workmates who'd been there what to see and do. The best advice was to sign up for Greyline tours. We did and saw things we'd never have seen if we'd been on our own. Liberty Island, Chinatown, Wall Street, St. Patrick's and St. John's cathedrals. Times Square. Rode the Staten Island Ferry. Central Park. Broadway. There were guides, of course, so we got a lot of info about all the places we saw.
