New TV........

Any opinions ? My old one, [37] years old, finally gave up this morning. I've tried all I know, to get the picture back on, but to no avail. I have audio, on all channels, but no picture.

Given my current physical state, I do not feel like walking around some big-box store...to shop.... so i have a TV guy coming tomorrow morning. I'll see what he suggest for the room size, etc. Just thought I'd ask here in advance.

BTW...smart tv or no smart tv ?
 

I'm happy with my Sony, currently 11 years old. The new TV's are so much better than the older ones. Get one, you won't be sorry. (But you probably don't need a "smart TV" or something with a lot of high tech features, just keep it as simple as possible.)
 
My son (involved in TV content production) once told me to buy what I can afford and forget all the hype that was in 2002... I went on line and bought almost the most inexpensive 32" TV listed and have been happy ever since... Good luck!
 

I highly recommend a Samsung TV because of the picture quality. The Smart TV is, IMO, just a gimmick unless you don't have a computer. It is too ponderous to try to use the internet with the TV. But the 4K picture is astounding if you set it to your liking. Look for it on sale, either online or at a bricks and mortar store.
 
Consider the distance between you and the TV when considering a choice. If you don't need a smart TV don't but one. Who is this TV guy? Go online and check for the most reliable sets as all about equal in picture quality. The higher the pixel count the clearer the picture. I have a Philips nd Vizio and I prefer the Philips.

The "tv guy" is the guy that actually repaired it the last time I had a problem. He narrowed it down to being the fault of my direct-tv control box. Called them, used his {ID} they approved his charge, it ended up costing me nothing. So!...he's the guy I called.
 
We always liked Samsung picture best, but we don't want a smart TV and there's very few choices of regular TVs anymore. Last one we bought was a Toshiba, it was cheap and we picked it up at the local Walmart, picture is next best to Samsung and it isn't smart.
 
My Sony is 10 years old & works perfectly. It was $900.00 at the time; it's less than half that now. I don't have a "Smart" TV & don't care for one.
 
I had a 19" portable and replaced it with an inexpensive 24" flatscreen television from Walmart for approx. $100.00. I consider it to be a disposable television but it does everything that I expect a television to do.

Next time I would bump it up to a 32" or 40".
 
I have a Samsung Smart TV. I do not use it for "household" stuff, but for streaming. I can stream Netflix, Prime and You Tube. If you have HULU you can stream that too, Basically, any streaming channels.
So, if you do a lot of streaming services, go for a TV that you can do that on. All you need to do is get it hooked up into your Internet. And sign into each service. But you stay signed in.
As for size, up to you and size of the room
 
The picture quality in the newer tv's is wonderful. I can see a lot better , what is on it!

I also love the flat screens, which are so much easier to move around and to find space for. They have a stand which is smaller that the screen.

The larger screen is a one time expense and worth spending a bit extra for it, particularly if you like certain types of shows, such as either nature or sports. (But not TOO large if it is a small room)

If you want the feature, then see if you can get one that records a show for you to be able to watch it when best for you, such as a program or event that is aired late at night, that you could record it IN the tv, and watch it the next day.
 
Last one I bought was 3 years ago and is a Samsung 49 inch smart tv. It's very easy to use and I'm quite happy with it. All I needed was to have Wifi to use it. It's very convenient for using the firestik and streaming tv that is available to a smart tv. So I was able to ditch the cable tv easily and pay much less for the streaming tv. TVs now are not that expensive unless you get a real fancy one. Good luck with it!
 
OMG! Get a 55 inch minimum and you will be floored at the picture quality!!!!!!!! We have a 65 inch beyond smart tv in our bonus room. That’s my man cave for watching tennis, etc. Wonderful!!!! A 55 inch in the living room for the wife.

There is a world of difference in what you were watching and probably much less cost than you expect.

I bought a 50" Plasma
Cheap to buy but expensive to run
I have a 7.1 AV receiver which I run my Blue ray player and DVD Recorder
Then home theater speakers
Then of course my external hard drive with my ahhem "movies" (wink)

I have a 32" in the bedroom which you can record to flash drive
Sonic First one lasted 4 days Sound No picture
I just swapped for new one at place I bought it

Lost all my groups on an update,forgot the name of this one until tonight searching for a joke I saw Seniors Forum and it clicked
I clicked and here I am

Have to love and leave as it is my bed time

Well the TV is back on........The service guy said that even though I had only the DirecTv remote in hand, I somehow switched off the "TV" video input. He corrected that......$45.00 service call.......Now for a new one, he suggest a 55 inch, LG,Sony or Samsung. Delivered, mounted on the wall, synced to my stereo, and new D/TV control box, old TV removed , $750.00

At least now I am not rushed, I can shop around a-bit. But since i cannot do all that myself, it's looking attractive. Maybe i can find a way to do it ? and save some $$$ . But my mobility/flexibility is shot so ?...........

I've been told LG an Samsung are best quality
When we moved to town, we shopped, got the 49" LG for $350 at wallyworld
Hired a 'TV guy' to hook up, show us the ropes ($100)

Sounds good.....I know the wall mount & labor, old TV removal, add to it , but it is what i want, and what I need so.......Ahhh the price of growing old. :rolleyes:

Go for it!

I'm pretty sure that your heirs won't have any trouble spending $750.00 of their inheritance on a new television so why should you! ;)
