Have only slept in separate rooms three times in our 20 years together. But, will sometimes sleep in different beds in a motel/hotel room.
My hip replacement, when she slept upstairs in our bed and I slept downstairs on the couch. Couldn't make it up the stairs, so. Rotator cuff surgery. I slept in a recliner, downstairs and she was upstairs. We bought a set of plug-in intercoms. One by the couch and recliner and other by the bed upstairs. We'd say "goodnight, love you" every night while I slept downstairs.
Another rotator cuff surgery, but different living place. I slept in recliner in living room, right outside our bedroom. Kept bedroom door open so we could say the same "goodnight, love you" each night.
IOW, we don't sleep in different rooms or different beds unless it's a surgery that requires that or, sometimes, when we stay at a motel/hotel. Always same room at motel/hotel, but different beds.
No "boy" or "girl" day or night out either. We go out, it's always together.
