Remember them ? Their stock is down to .72 [seventy two cents] p/share ! I can remember when they were one of the "biggies" Going back to when i was a kid 60-65 years ago, Penny's,Sears,& Shillito's was all my mother & my sister talked about.

Shillito's is now gone, and Sears is barely hanging on.

Strange what happens to these companies ?

Well, they just can't keep up. They tried the scheme of "no sales", just prices that were "rock-bottom" (according to them). Didn't work.

Tying in with another discussion on here, I'm just 'ol "Joan Blow". I don't dress up much. If I DO need something fancy, I'll go to Dillards or Macy or a high-end ladies' resale boutique . Mostly I'm a t-shirt, jeans or shorts person. For those, I can do my shopping at Walmart, Belk, Ross or thrift shops much, much cheaper. Penny's is dull, to me. It's neither high-style nor bargain. I'll bet I haven't bought anything from there in five years. Same with Sears, but it's probably been ten years.

Stores have to either keep up or get out.

I stopped buying from J.C. Penney years ago.

The high markups and fake markdowns on goods made me believe that nothing they offered represented a good value.

I also remember before Sears was taken over by Kmart in 2005 it was rumored that the real estate that Sears owned was more valuable than the Sears stores that sat on it and the sales volume that the stores produced.

My brain is just about gone, this thread reminded me of George Carlin's bit about what happened to Roebuck when Sears dropped his name.

I like going to our two local shopping malls. My daughter and I make an afternoon of it ... we get lunch, shop, maybe some ice cream at the end of the trip ... plus we get exercise and don't have to deal with the weather. I hope the mall doesn't go extinct.

the mall on my side of town closed several years ago because of gangs--it is also happening to the one remaining mall on the other side of town-it is safer to stay away from them

I rarely go to a mall, as in less than once a year. Never was a big fan of shopping though, from my youngest years forward. The only kind of shopping I've ever liked has been food shopping.

I still shop at Penneys, but that`s because it is the closest department store to us here in the sticks. And even it is 30 miles away. Kohls is right next to it,but I have never liked Kohls-talk about high prices! Also,Kohls went in where most of the Mervyn`s stores were (probably just a West Coast chain)and I loved Mervyn`s. Can`t believe they couldn`t survive with all the money I spent there!

If I want to buy something "nice",I will drive the 90 minutes, over the mountain,to Macy`s. Rarely do it though.

I do. I have a chest type freezer with their name brand that is still running after all these years.

WOW! They have been out of business for a LONG time! But now that I think about it,our house that we sold in 2012 had a (Harvest Gold) fridge in the garage that the previous owners had left and it worked just fine.It was a Montomery Ward`s brand. Worked great and I`m thinking it had to be 35 years old at least.

I have a large build & always liked durable “classic” & sportswear brands & styles, which JCP used to carry a lot of, then several years ego, I don’t know if it was national or local but they decided to change their frankly dowdy (to some people) image and go after the youth market, Changed their stock a lot but HA HA, guess what, no stylish young person over age 7 would be caught dead in there. Didn’t fly, so they have been drifting back to more of the previous. But if my money wasn’t good enough for them then, they sure aren’t going to see any of it now. Kohl’s is laughable. Shopping there is like gambling. Between their sales & coupons & such you don’t know till you’re at the register how much something will cost.

On the news today....many stores in "malls" are closing all over the area, and in two locations the malls themselves are closing. One of the main reasons given, are roving gangs of teens , grabbing older folks bags, knocking them down etc. In two cases profiled, even the 40-50 somethings accompanying the elders report trouble fighting them off.

Stores report "smash & grab " raids by these gangs as well.

What can I say, I'm a KMart kind of guy. I don't like Walmart. I feel that Wallyworld sells cheaper, (as in quality,) versions of name brand goods. I still buy my appliances from Sears. They still have a great service staff.

Our Kmart just closed down in December. When it opened here(well,it had been here for several years, but a new store was built)back in about 1995,it was the largest Kmart in the United States. Why they built such a large one here in this small County is beyond me,but they did.And it was great, for many years. But the last few years it became much more expensive and the shelves were always half empty. You could certainly see what was coming...

However, Sears only serves Kenmore brand of appliances-dumb I thought
That was a good washer/dryer, do they still sell them, are they still an excellent appliance?
