Capital letters are now 'officially racist'

I have never heard of something more ridiculous.
Seriously, are you kidding me?

Sky News host James Morrow says capital letters are now "officially racist". It comes as a university academic in Canada is pushing to desist the use of capital letters except to "acknowledge the Indigenous struggle for recognition". "They get rid of capital letters except for the capital 'I' in Indigenous because it's some whole thing about capital letters representing hierarchies of white people and racism and stuff like that," Mr Morrow said.

Full Story.

Dr Linda Manyguns, a Canadian Indigenous academic at a Calgary University obviously has feelings of outrage over the treatment of First Nations people in this country. She has cause. For example. The unfolding Residential horror story of who

knows how many unknown children in hidden graves on the grounds of former residential schools is a mark of shame we will carry for a long time to come. Yes, the Catholic church has much to answer for, but there is plenty of blame to go around. Racism is real in my beloved country, we must acknowledge that, listen to our Indigenous brothers and

sisters, and find a way to move forward in reconciliation. I doubt Dr. Manyguns will succeed in her quest, but I fully acknowledge the oppression past and present suffered by Canadian First Peoples There are many examples I have not listed here. I doubt very much Mr. Morrow would feel any empathy for Canadian Aboriginals. I have read some of his stuff. His values seem incompatible with their goals, and those of their Canadian allies.

I wasn't the brightest spark at school when I was a kid, and learning the written English language didn't come easy for me, but thanks to a dedicated teacher I muddled through, so, I will continue to write the way I was taught.
I am not a racist, so if anyone thinks that I am by reading what I write ( capitol letters and all ), then I respectfully suggest that they get their head examined. :)

you can't do anything but laugh can you ?..it's all so ridiculous... the fact that anyone listens to snowflakes and acts on their suggestions like these is what is Tragic...

I believe you may have misunderstood the gist of my post. No one is suggesting anything of the kind. This pertains to the mindset of Canadian aboriginals and certain unacceptable aspects of Canadian culture. I fail to see why anyone would need to mock such a sad state of affairs,

IMO this type of thing is a tedious distraction that eventually leads to a mental/emotional overload/burnout of what should be serious issues.
Perhaps this is to bring recognition of serious issue to Canadians, not necessarily just the capitalisation of letters which to her are a symbol of the systematic oppression of our First Peoples. I find nothing tedious in recognising systemic racism. Lack of safe drinking water, housing shortage, houses uninhabitable due to mould. RCMP systemic violence against indigenous suspects and prisoners, Etc etc etc.

or as my fellow Scots folk would say to these people .... haud yer wheesht wi' awe yer haverin' ...awa an' Bile yer Heid....

Wow, racism is alive and well. This individual is a university professor, holding a Doctorate. I believe I recall you making a statement a while back that there is no racism in England.

“Offence is so easily given. And where the 'minority' issue is involved, the rules seem to shift about: Most of the time a person who is female/black/disabled/gay wants this not to be their defining characteristic; you are supposed to be blind to it. But then, on other occasions, you are supposed to observe special sensitivity, or show special respect.”

Lynne Truss, Talk to the Hand: The Utter Bloody Rudeness of the World Today, or Six Good Reasons to Stay Home and Bolt the Door.
I think it does not require a special sensitivity but merely common decency to recognise the unhealthy living conditions present in many of the Reservations in my country.

I do not think this action will take flight, but what is important it shows the desperate plight of aboriginal peoples all over the world. To laugh at their distress is sad and lowly behaviour. I have only just arrived in Australia and I see it here too. If it is impossible to be sympathique, then say nothing, that is much kinder.

Thank you so much for your understanding and compassion. And yes, I agree, the capitalisation can only be a symbol, not a reality. Hopefully it draws needed attention.

An outsider or new arrival can often see more clearly what the locals cannot. You are quite right about racism in Australia. One of my favourite Australian authors, Frank Hardy, once said that when you scratch an Australian, underneath you will find a racist. He was not wrong.

I very much doubt that any post colonial country does not have a 'black' history that has been for the most part swept under the mat.

Thank you Warrigal.

Interesting take on racism but racism which is bad is like respect which is good is a tenuous mindset. They're attitudes that you cannot change in people. The best you can possibly hope for is your ability to make them act accordingly in your presence. That's the way I see it leastways.

This is such a sad commentary on the state of our humanity that anyone would be ridiculed for attempting to bring much needed attention to the plight of Indigenous people, whether in Canada or anywhere else.

I doubt Dr. Manyguns will succeed in her quest, but however frivolous it may seem, its an attempt to direct much needed attention to the oppression and mistreatment of First Nations people.

The ridicule of Dr Manyguns is rude and disrespectful and completely unnecessary.

I agree that Indigenous people of post-colonial nations have been horribly mistreated, but eliminating all capital letters as an awakening technique is an absurd non-starter that will only invite ridicule and push back.

If we want to start drawing attention to mistreated humans via the use of punctuation then Females, Children, Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Mixed Race, Kurds, Royhinga, The Disabled, The Elderly, Prisoners, Religious Minorities, Poor People Of Every Color, and so many more should make that list.

In short, 3/4 (or more) of the humans on this planet struggle for recognition and fair treatment.

Can someone point me in the direction of what this woman actually said or proposed? All I can find is the short video clip and other right wing media yacking about that clip and parroting with nothing of substance. So what's in the clip is a talking head saying she said it was hierarchies and that's it besides their opinionated outrage.
