What Popular or Long Running Conspiracy Theories Do You Reject Or Believe In?

I am on another forum that has a section for 'Conspiracies and Theories" and I am flabbergasted at what some people believe like we never landed on the moon. Is there a conspiracy that you hold on to going back to, did FDR know Japan was coming to bomb Pearl Harbor to 911 for examples? For me. I don't buy in to any conspiracies but I am never convinced of any theory or conclusion on the day of the killing of JFK.

I, too, wonder if we will ever know the full story about the JFK assassination. The fact that the Warren Commission reports were sealed for decades stinks. It's almost as if they wanted to be sure that the instigators would be dead and buried by the time the truth was finally revealed to the public.

Did FDR know that Pearl Harbor would be attacked??? It seems strange that all the aircraft carriers were sent on a "training mission" far away from Hawaii...leaving just the old and nearly obsolete battleships to be attacked.

Personally, I think there are many reasons why used car salesmen are trusted more than most politicians.

I'm interested in all of them.

I think that these discussions help to open the mind to fresh ideas and other possibilities, be skeptical.

This thread needs to be re-opened. I think that there may be a conspiracy to keep it closed for as long as it appears to have been. That and there are so few comments here. C'mon people, what lies are "they" telling us or have they told us in the past? Lizard people? Area 51? Flat earth? I want to know what's what and why.

I ain't afraid of no hoax!

I have to roll my eyes when anyone mentions the dreaded "Bermuda Triangle". It's pure BS. Nobody can point to any reliable data that says this portion of the planet is statistically more prone to "disappearances", and shipwrecks. It is complete fabrication.
Tend to agree, tho it can be a fun suspend disbelief Sci-Fi movie premise. But earth and it's oceans have far more interesting verifiable 'anomalies'.

You know how there are versions of most all the fairytales/legends with similar archetypes (heroes/heroines/villains and allies) in most every culture? The fact that there is another similar area off coast of Japan, the Devil's Triangle, suggests to me that older and more modern folklore and rumors got all mixed up together and they grew, were fed by human fascination with abstract idea of it. Add to that the psychological thing of how it feels to think that a loved one 'lost at sea' was a victim of some unknown force or enemy, rather than due to faulty equipment, inexperienced crew or even rogue wave.

The last of those, rogue waves, were thought to be sailor folklore until relatively recently. When we consider how vast the Pacific in particular is, it seems we should have long ago figured out that sometimes the massive waves following underwater earthquakes might rise up but be heading in such a direction that they have time to dissipate before reaching any inhabited land mass where humans had to acknowledge they exist and called them Tsunamis.

There have been many so-called conspiracy theories that were laughed at, only to be proven true at a later date.
There are videos regarding this on YouTube, however, i try to be selective in which channels there i give credence to because some are just aiming for max views and patreon supporters.

i tend to go with TopTenz because i've fact checked (or already knew the facts he covered) things on straight history/science vids of theirs to feel they make a great effort to be accurate. Tho i recently commented on one of his videos about 'myths about the human body' where he said the brain is not trainable. i've read too much neuroscience and had to much experience in my own efforts to say an adaptable person. i suggested a book for him to read about it. Tho doubt he'll see the comment--maybe a few of the other commenters will see and read up on it.

The disappearance of Harold Holt in 1967 raised a conspiracy theory.
I never believed a word of it.

On 17 December 1967, Harold Holt, the Prime Minister of Australia, disappeared while swimming in the sea near Portsea, Victoria. An enormous search operation was mounted in and around Cheviot Beach, but his body was never recovered. Holt was presumed to have died, and his memorial service five days later was attended by many world leaders. It is generally agreed that his disappearance was a simple case of an accidental drowning, but a number of conspiracy theories surfaced, most famously the suggestion that he had been collected by a Chinese submarine.

In any conversation about 'conspiracy theories' it is always important to remember two things as well use your own reasoning skills to examine things presented as 'evidence'.

1) Not all 'conspiracy theories' are created equal and not all people who hold some theory labeled as such are of the same psychological make up, despite what some folks say.

2) While conspiracies of various kinds have no doubt been with humanity since the early days of people living in centrally with governments over various sized expanse of land from city-states to the Mongol Empire. The modern use of the terms 'conspiracy theory', and 'conspiracy theorist' were largely used to cast doubt on private citizen reports of UFOs, it worked so then (from Roswell thru the 1950s) that in the late '60s the military and governmental leaders employed it again to discredit would be whistleblowers on the fact that at the same time that the Hallucinogens of various kinds were being criminalized Federal agencies, including Military were dosing service personnel with them without preparation or guidance. Dr. Leary prepped his subjects and had people who were not on the hallucinogen present as guides to keep his subjects safe. Yet instead of patterning their tests after his they made him a criminal they deemed such a threat to society they housed him on same cell block with Charles Manson.

Which reminds me YT has a new CT vid--supposedly something fishy about the Tate-LaBianca murders? It is likely too ludicrous to watch all the way thru but may be good for laugh.

Not sure if he's the same one i saw on a 'strange disappearances' compilation video.

The name escapes me at moment but one of them was an Australian politician who was having some kind of personal/financial problems and one of the conspiracy theories was the guy faked his 'death' to avoid consequences of some bad choices.

Conspiracy Theories Do You Reject Or Believe In?

Good idea for a thread! Thanks.

I am too skeptical about people's ability to organize and keep secrets to believe in most of them. For example if the CIA or even the mafia had been involved in JFK's assassination I think lots of evidence would have leaked out by now. It is kind of hard to accept that such an important and history changing event could have been the work of just one, not particularly bright man... So we want to believe there was more to it. Couple that with a not great job done by the Warren Commission, a kind of rush to stop speculation, and you have the makings for conspiracy theories, but it doesn't make them right.

That said I am still looking for that island where Marylin and Elvis are hiding, though they would be pretty old at this point. But then in the conspiracy theory maybe they haven't aged. Hope Marylin hasn't, much anyway, when I meet her!

That is interesting, what examples were you thinking of? I like Feywon's rogue wave example, it is a good one.

I reject the idea lately that any argument against the popular narrative is a "conspiracy theory".

Conspiracy theory is the name given to buzz about something going on thought to be a plot by the gov't or big business to harmfully pull the wool over people's eyes. It wasn't meant to refer to any and every unpopular idea.

That's very true, not sure why. Maybe just the result of inherited wealth...
When consider that History.com says about how that money was acquired by Patriarch Joe Sr. and it is common knowledge that Matriarch Rose (Joe, Sr's wife) worked to instill a concept that with great wealth comes great responsibility to 'do good'. The later generations no doubt got mixed messages.
For a long time rumor had it he acquired wealth as a bootlegger during prohibition. While he was in the 'alcohol business according the site, his biographer diligently searched out any evidence of such and could not verify it. It is more like some maybe not strictly legal dealing on with stocks just before the crash in '29 contributed greatly. The link i'm posting has links to more info about him.

Yep, see my post #10 above.

Ok.
But, I still can't help but be fascinated by all the stories of planes and boats disappearing in the Bermuda Triangle.

That' just me...

Most of us are, its why we have and will always have conspiracy theories. Fiction is often more fun and sometimes more interesting than truth.

And when they rarely turn out to be true that also fuels things, and makes them all more interesting.

...just another area with bad weather that takes down ships. The coast along Florida+SC+NC is littered with 400 years worth of shipwrecks.
