Are you a pacifist?

I think most Americans today would say no, as I and chic did above. However at the time, in the early years anyway, a majority of us did support going in. Same thing happened in Afghanistan and other places. Seems our hindsight is better than our judgement...
Afghanistan attacked us on our soil. Vietnam never did. Therein lies the difference.

Sometimes wars have to be fought. I have seen very few pacifists in my life time and certainly not here! What sort of person is the one who starts a fire and then runs away before the explosion? Certainly not a pacifist!
An arsonist?

Of course, and I think we were right to go in after al-Qaeda in Afghanistan. However that was done within the first year.

It was really al-Qaeda not Afghanistan that attacked us. Al-Qaeda was not Afghan, they were Arabs, mostly Saudis, that the Taliban allowed to live and work in Afghanistan (originally with US support, but that's another story, for another thread). Bad as the Taliban were and are they were not the folks responsible for 911, the Taliban never attached us. If we had gotten out after running al-Qaeda out we'd have been ok.

I believe the US (and much of the world) public supported the initial intervention into Afghanistan, and then continued to support it too long, much too long.

Should the west go to war with China if they try to take Taiwan? Some would say yes because they threaten democracy and others will say no, it’s their business because it used to belong to them anyway. The politicians will decide and we must follow.
Hmm, we used to “belong” to the United Kingdom, England, as did a lot of countries. Should we go to war if England wants their colonies back?

You weren't a flower child @Aneeda72. I was too young but joined in spirit.

No, I was not a flower child. I joined the Army during the Vietnam conflict. If allowed, I would have gone and fought. I was raised a patriot. I was raised to realize I owed my country for the freedoms I enjoyed and the sacrifices that were made, by others, for those freedoms.

I will admit I have a great deal of distain for those that talk the talk but don’t walk the walk. There are a great many ways to contribute to the welfare of your country, those that don’t should leave. Yes, I am very “hard-lined” on this.

I can trace our military service back to the war for independence-in my family someone always served and fought. Both sides in the civil war. 😂. Apparently we are a blood thirsty group, but patriotic. 😍

@Aneeda72, I did the greatest service to my country, which I do love, by not joining the military. Know thyself.

Would I rather not go to war? Yes. The blatant aggression of WWII had to be fought. But most wars aren't fought for that level of aggression. If 50 years into the future, you can't conceive of a. definite benefit for a war, then a war shouldn't be fought. There is nothing like the heightened emotions of a time to fuel calls for war, when a war isn't justified.

Leave? That's ridiculous. And go where? We'd need globalization and open borders for that. Yeah, I always wanted to choose where I would live, but those damn laws get in the way.

We had full access to Canada and Mexico until Covid-open borders were everywhere. Lots of people, men especially in the US during the Vietnam conflict fled to Canada to avoid the draft and doing their duty. Good riddance to them! They were later allowed to come back 😊, I did not agree with this policy.

So you could have left if you wanted to at any time until Covid hit. I have no ideal why you would say “laws got in the way” they didn’t for most of your lifetime. But whatever, I don’t want to get in a back and forth debate about this. I really don’t care about the issue.

Edited: and you could have moved throughout the USA, plenty of states to choose from and many different areas. I lived in several places. No laws prevented that option.

It's dangerous when people just blindly follow orders. That's what happened in Nazi Germany and why there wasn't more pushback against their policies, although since the government controlled all the media, most people were blind to what was really going on. There's no excuse in this day and age to not be informed or should I say, there's no legitimate reason. Those who are uninformed or misinformed have made the choice to be that way.

Our government has lied us into several wars during our lifetimes. It is not our duty to fight for our leaders or for corporations. To be American means to defend the U.S. Constitution and our democracy. Following blindly is blatantly un-American.

Hate to break it to ya, but........there is no Santy.

and, even if there was one, he'd not leave the north pole because of the covid
