Racism 2.0

Let people do their own thing. Do not look for racial overtones everywhere.
Oh, and I did some more research on Filipinos in Texas. I asked all my white female friends if they are afraid of these people and the answer is a flat No.

Abortion? The nerve of some people! I think this conversation should be aborted.

Care to explain this post ?

Local weather ? what the hell does that matter ...... my monogram ? ..... where does that matter ?

As for abortion ..... you're the one that mentioned "or yet to be lived ones too"

I was very lucky to be born into a family where someone's race didn't matter. When I got married I married an Irish guy. My MIL would say "God save me from the Italians, but not you Barbara."(me) hubby and I have friends that are like family to us even though we are of different races. I was shocked last night when my ex-DIL was picking on the girl my grandson just got engaged to because the girl is from a different race than my grandson. I think the girl is wonderful and makes my grandson happy.

People denied the human right to water or to use a toilet.
In the 1950's, this was still going on in Cleveland, Ohio. I recognized this as an atrocity even at my young age. The first time that I took public transportation alone, I went and sat in the big, long seat at the back of the bus. The driver actually told me that I should not sit there... I was white and should sit at the front.

I don't believe that racism is natural. In my experience, it is taught. Fortunately, my parents did not teach this. At a time when non-whites were treated as sub-humans, my home was enriched by friends of all skin-tones and ethnicities. I am so grateful!

@Nathan posted this on another thread, I think it's worth repeating here:

Prejudice is deeply en-grained in the psyche, most people will deny that it's there. Even with "enlightened" folks that make a conscious effort to treat people equally....the prejudice is hardwired

I believe this is true, its a part of all of us. To over come it we need to understand that and consciously try to resist our instincts.

I am sure he has, and probably always will. Hopefully less and less, but it ain't going away. Maybe understanding that its instinctive and not personal would help? Probably not much...

Hey @OneEyedDiva don't be too harsh on people for what they did at age 15.

I don't know Mark Wahlberg or anything more about him that what you said, but I am not perfect...

I never physically hurt anyone, but you wouldn't be happy to know some of the things I said at that age... The world changes, and to some extent so do we, hopefully for the best.
I just read the article (https://www.psychologicalscience.or...m-a-basic-human-need-and-way-of-thinking.html) and from what I gathered, the study addressed in this article came to the conclusion that some people are more prone to think this way. I don't agree with the author's conclusion that this is the norm.

I think racism is part of human nature and if you choose to live in a mixed society, it is something you have to accept and learn to live with. (I should add that I have spent many years living in other countries and have experienced racial prejudice myself. In Africa the white people are foreigners, and there is a lot of hostility towards us, so the whole racism thing affects all colours. This is something which tends to get over-looked.)
I'm white but I never will accept racism. Here in Canada too many natives are racially profiled and it has to stop!!

Unfortunately racism is alive and well all over the world today. I grew up during the segregation times and where I grew up in Washington State there were not really segregated schools, but the schools were still mostly white and black. What I hope is in the future the younger generation makes a huge change with this. it doesn't seem like today's generation is going to make much progress in it since not only are races fighting against each other, but also one another.

I think life is hard. I think a lot of people are filled with all kinds of anger and resentment at the difficulties of life. And one of the ways that they vent that frustration and anger is into racist hatred.

That seems to have been going on during the entire history of civilization.

The powerful mocking and abusing the less powerful.

The Romans used to mock the enemies that they conquered. They were always pushing the idea that they were the advanced civilization and that justified them doing whatever they wanted to different peoples.

So, sure racism is ubiquitous.

In American society, in the 1920's, Klan membership was at 5 million people. That represented about 5% of the adult population of the US. That is a whole lotta racists. Just figure, 5% of America thought that joining an organization that orchestrated assaults and murders of African-Americans was just fine.

If 5% thought that was ok, what percent just thought holding some racist ideas and engaging in some racist actions was ok? Oh, let's just give it a rough guess at a minimum of 20% - 30% real racist hatred of African-Americans.

Those kind of figures do not suggest it is anything close to a minor problem.

Just a lot of evil out there in the world.

My step-father's mother personally witnessed a pogrom, in Russia, when she was 4 years old. The Cossacks would come through the Jewish villages (which were all dirt poor), on horseback and just assault or murder random people with swords. All they were doing was breathing. That was their offense, they were breathing.
