Sleep Time Tricks

Getting to bed at a reasonable hour, for me at least, seems like a challenging task every night. Does anyone else have the issue of just not getting the motivation to WANT to gt into bed. There always seems like there is just one more thing to do before the days end.

What are you tips, tricks, or techniques that you use around night time to get to bed and to get to sleep at a reasonable hour to prevent staying up late into the night puttering around.

I feel that I have fallen into some bad habits that may never break. However, it would be good to get some feedback on some other peoples situations regarding sleep and to see if maybe some one might have some useful little trick that I may try to get into my bed and to just close my eyes. WHY IS IT SO HARD?!

I have the same problem. I am up all hours of the night. Just not sleepy. I get op everyday 7-7:30 am even if I am up till 3 or 4. Of course my Umbrella Cockatoo sees to it I am up. My Dr gave me a sleep aide. You have to make sure no lights are on, your cell phone in the other room , your pc off and in another room , You can wear those eye masks, just try to turn off your brain.....think of something that always warms your heart. Ask the Lord to help you get some much needed rest.

I think about shutting down the computer an hour before bed, it's in another room too, so that helps. I have no cell phones nearby either, never got hooked on using them. I hear some people sleep with them, and check their fb page in the middle of the night with their smart phones...that can't be good.

I sometimes take a 1mg Source Naturals sublingual Melatonin, but the room must be dark to feel the effects. I often listen to a late night radio show on a small radio, like Coast to Coast, usually I'll fall asleep with the radio on, and shut it off later. I try not to eat a couple of hours before bed, so there's no heartburn, etc. going on.

I endorse all of SB's suggestions although many recommend turning off the computer even earlier. Alas, I violate this rule every night and I'm not sure I could ever follow it. I am a poor sleeper and my internet addiction probably is a large part of the reason. I take a substantially larger dose of melatonin than SB. Pondering deep existential questions during the pre-sleep hours should definitely be avoided. Invariably I will dream about the same problem I was pondering in the evening and one thing is for sure, your problem solving skills do not improve when you are asleep.

Hi Windnsea,

I have gotten into a bad habit of "getting" to bed ok, but then reading into the wee hours. Then I sleep in to make up for it. I'm not able to work a regular job, so I have no schedule. I always did really well with a schedule. I know if I am active during the day, just moving, not sitting around a lot, and out getting fresh air, I sleep better. But again, if I've slept in til 9 or 10, I am in no way ready for bed unless I have literally worn myself out.

I know there are as many reasons for not sleeping well, as there are people, but to go back to basics for me, is best. Eat right, stay busy, even off and on, take a walk with fresh air, and to start, I have to get out of bed at a decent time. I felt best when I was up by 6. Then when I'd go to bed, I could only read maybe a half an hour, lol, then konk out;)

Hi Windnsea,

That sounds really similar to my problem. Once you begin reading it seems that you cant get to sleep until you have reached this point of exhaustion that is so severe that you mind and body are at its witts end and it just shuts down. It almost feels like a coma rather than healthy sleep. It has been really bad recently.

Thanks every one for such helpful insight I will try some of these techniques. Have been up till about 5-6 am than sleep until about 3 pm. I am lucky I get to work from home or this would be getting me in real trouble... maybe it is the working from home that keeps it going... hmmm.

It's my mind that won't rest...tbh... I work very long hours...then I have a little routine before going to bed as is is always suggested, then I read a little every night, and as you say WNS..the body just shuts down coma like...but my problem is it doesn't shut down for long...I'm awake again about 3 hours later because my mind is whirring again, and I can't get back to sleep so I'm always in a state of abject exhaustion..

My technique is 100% effective but requires will power to achieve. Instead of counting sheep, I count blows on my head with a heavy rubber mallet. I don't know how many blows it takes due to being rendered unconscious but it is apparently many because I always wake up with many large knots on my head and black eyes.

I'm bad but not THAT bad!

Here I am at 10.30 pm on this computer - which is in the living room. I really should be reading a book as I find that most helpful and restful before going to sleep. Already had my chamomile tea.

I think Sea has the right idea, shutting the pc off well before heading off to bed; at least that's what I've been thinking I need to do to keep my mind a bit more silent, free and clear, long before heading off bed. Might not help, but, I'm thinking it can't hurt to give it a try, it makes sense to me.

I usually have a bath around 9 or 10, get my pj's on. Go into kitchen and tidy up. Take .3 mg melatonin, brush/floss and play on computer for about 1/2 hr. til I get sleepy. Then head for the bed where I pretty much knock out til morning. I try not to talk on the phone at night because long conversations get my mind too active.

There are a lot of factors that go into getting a good nights' sleep for us. A few things that we practice are:

1. We're always up early, the latest we sleep in is 5:30, we're usually up earlier than that.
2. We are active all day. No sitting around watching tv; we're engaged in the community, busy with life, or busy around the home place. We make it a point to work out every day (a long walk, biking, or the bowflex and stationary bike during inclement weather).
3. We never take naps during the day. Ever.
4. We maintain a proper sleeping environment. We're "hicks in the sticks" so we don't have any noise, no neighbors, no loud cars, etc. The bedroom is kept cool, dark and we only use the bedroom for two things (no tv watching, etc).
5. We both read for about 20 minutes before we go to sleep. When one of us turns the light out, we both do.

We're both blessed with quality sleep, so we must be doing something right.
