Are you an ex-smoker?

I stopped smoking about 20 years ago. And every once in a while, I get the urge to smoke. Most of the time, I'm ok with not smoking. There's an episode of "Frasier" where his agent has to stop smoking. But she tells in great detail why she loves to smoke. Gotta tell you if I had a pack near me during that show, I would have lit up. Watching someone inhale a smoke.......... And if I only had one month to live, I'd buy a carton. Are you an ex-smoker? Do you still get urges?

I quit 40 years ago when I was 30. It took 3 attempts. A year after I quit, I actually have terrible symptoms when I'm around smoke - headache, burning eyes, shortness of breath.

I was a heavy smoker, but I managed to quit 30 years ago.

Ten years after quitting, I lived with a smoker. Because of stress I started smoking again too. But I didn't like it, and I quit after 3 months.

Now it's been 20 years since I've felt any urge to smoke.

Being around smokers doesn't bother me though. I hate the silly antics when smokers try to keep the smoke from blowing toward me. I already told them it doesn't bother me.

I quit in 1992 - one month before a yearly chest Xray revealed a mass in my right lung which turned out to be cancer.. They removed the right upper lobe. I have never smoked since and have never really had an urge to. After 30 years they discovered another mass in my right lower lobe. which also turned out to be cancer. It was treated with radiation this time. because surgery wasn't a viable option due to my age (85). Like last time I will be Xrayed (CT scanned) every 3 months to make sure the radiation killed it. Supposedly you are no longer vulnerable after you quit - after 30 years, I though I was safe from any more lung cancer - not!

I quit when my 1st. son was born. It was about choices. I was in the Navy so our total monthly income wasn't very much.

The choices.
1. Buy a carton at the new higher price of $1.20
2. Buy 15 jars of baby food for 8 cents a bottle.

Being new to fatherhood I immediately discovered babies like to eat. The choice was a no brainer.

I quit a 3 pack a day of Camels 26 yrs. ago. I've had 2 very small nodules on my lungs removed via radiation. I am scanned every 3 months, and while there are several more nodes, they are almost microscopic and unchanged, I do have a small amount of Emhysema. It hasn't bothered me, however. I do not cough but do have some shortness of breath on exertion. I sleep flat and so far, seem to be holding my own.

I am proud to say I am a smoker that just no longer smokes. It has only been just over a year, so I still have cravings and urges but I don't worry about acting on those urges anymore. It is like any other addiction and I must always be careful, just one could get me smoking again.

I quit about 15 years ago using Chantix and it has made a big difference in my health, but I do miss it.

Sometimes when I’m out I catch a whiff of second hand smoke that I enjoy the way other people enjoy walking past a bakery.

When I get to the end of the road, I may begin smoking during the last few months of my life.
If I get a whiff of smoke, it makes me hack til I can't breathe.

i quit in like 2009 i think. i got copd. then a few yrs ago i got really stressed and did the vape for a bit thinking it would be safer. it's not. i had 0 nicotine in my vapes. it was just to take that urge away. i finally gave them up when i saw what it did to my windshield in my van and how hard it was to get it cleaned off. i don't really get urges anymore. and i don't miss being forced to smoke outside in all the weather. or smelling like an ashtray.

I've smoked for the better part of 65 years. I did quit for a year or two, in the early 90's, with Chantix, but my wife still smoked, and one day I lit one of hers up, and I was soon "hooked". I recently had a series of heart and lung exams...x-rays, 3 day heart monitor, etc., and the tests came back OK. They did put me on a low dose of Coreg, to reduce my blood pressure a bit....the Only drug I take, and it's only $3/month. I've had a couple of doctors say that trying to quit, after smoking this long, might cause more problems than the smokes do. So, I just try to keep it down to about 1/2 pack a day.

Oh yes I was a heavy smoker and I am sitting here with an oxygen maker in an unused room and a long damn plastic hose and a cannula in my nose. And yes I still get the urge and it has been at least 20 years since I quit for good. If I could afford the 10-12 bucks a pack I would likely still smoke! COPD is not fun!

I smoked for about 10 years (started in my teens) but quit six weeks before I got married because I didn't want to smell like cigarette smoke on my wedding day. My then-husband was a smoker, too, but never found a path forward to quitting. I haven't had a cigarette since 1983.

No, my mother quit smoking at the age of 25, got lung cancer at 77, more than 50 years later...

I do think the risk goes down, but not away.

I never smoked cigarettes, or well less than a pack so far in life anyway. However I do smoke an average of about 1 cigar a month. Smoked a bit of weed many years ago, but not a whole lot. A couple of years ago I tried some legal MJ in Oregon, more vape than smoke, I wasn't impressed. Oh, and I've smoked using a hookah (tobacco) a couple of times. Not sure any of that really qualifies me as a smoker.

I developed COPD 10 years after I quit.

Smoked non-filtered for awhile , then the EX talked me into her brand [filtered] . Then I quit 20+ years ago. I don't get urges ... but do admit I enjoyed them when i did smoke. I tried a really nice aroma [pipe like] cigar for a while , but old cigar smoke [in the house] smells different.
