Who says horses are not important in modern Policing ? Watch 3 Toronto Police mounted officers chase and apprehend a car with 3 potential robbers in this video from 1 day ago. The location is in Sherway Gardens a large west Toronto shopping mall. Link. Kyle.Taylor on Twitter: "🚨BREAKING WILD TAKEDOWN🚨 Video shows the Toronto police mounted unit & Toronto Police 22 Division responding to and taking down at gunpoint three males who were called in that were potentially trying to rob another male at Sherway Gardens in the parking lot. #Toronto https://t.co/TejFJRC8tg" / Twitter JimB.

It made me feel anxious to see the policeman block the car with the horse, in Colorado a motorist purposely drove into a horse that was being used to block traffic (I think by a cowboy moving animals across the road, not by a policeman) and the horse had to be put down.

yes I agree, I was totally waiting for them to drive right into the horses...or even shoot at them

 They cannot be Mounties. No red coats. 🤣

Seriously though, how great to see that they arrested three men at gun point and no-one died. Great work RCMP, Toronto.
A slight correction. The mounted officers are not RCMP. They are members of the Toronto Police Service's mounted unit. JimB.

There were three mounted officers in front of the car, all of whom were pointing their hand guns at the driver. Within 3 minutes, other officers arrived on the scene, who removed the 3 occupants and hand cuffed them. A safe arrest. JImB.

We still have some mounted police in Sydney. They are usually seen on ceremonial occasions and can be used for crowd control during demonstrations.

The Toronto Police mounted unit does ceremonial duties, such as yesterday's funeral for Police Constable Andrew Hong, who was murdered while eating in coffee shop by a shooter with a hand gun. The killer tried to take Hong's firearm, but the holster retention device prevented him from getting it. Later the shooter was shot and killed in a fire fight with 4 officers. On a daily basis the TPS mounted officers carry out regular patrol duties across the 17 Divisions in the Metropolitan Toronto area ( 245 square miles ). Police horses are specially selected and bred. A cross between a Clydesdale, and a standard bred. Big tall and yet placid in nature, they work year round, summer and winter here in Toronto. Barring serious injury or illness, the TPS horses serve for 15 to 20 years, then they are retired to a farm. Currently the TPS mounted unit has 29 horses in their central Toronto stables near Lake Ontario. Each horse has 2 dedicated riders who alternate shifts, so the horses work 4 days, and have 2 days off each week.
