What I couldn't get this week shopping

I made my every other week trek to Aldi and they were out of dairy products which are the items I go there for mostly. I bought the other items I needed and went home and placed an online order with Wal-Mart. They had every item in stock and I didn’t have to settle for store brand substitutes. Plus, free same day delivery to my front door. Have never been a big fan of Wally World but they do seem to have their act together during this supply chain situation.

In the Media today...

Supermarkets are rationing fruit and vegetables as shelves continue to remain bare in stores across the country.

Shoppers in some Asda stores have been told that they can buy up to three packs each of tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, lettuce, salad bags, broccoli, cauliflower and raspberries at a time as supplies run empty in a number of outlets.

The crisis has developed in recent weeks due to soaring energy costs which have forced British farmers to switch off greenhouses as they desperately try to make ends meet.

Meanwhile, a 'perfect storm' of flooding, cold temperatures and cancelled ferries have caused major supply problems on the Continent.

We have got used to having fruit and vegetables all year round. Yesterday, a fellow shopper and I were standing in front of the greenery section moaning, 'They haven't got what I want'. He wanted fresh peas, I wanted a cucumber. At least he was able to settle for tinned peas, whereas I had to go home to disappointed guinea pigs!

yesterday I managed to get Mange Tout, baking potatoes ... and grapes .. but I couldn't get Bananas.. and other than the aforesaid all they had was close to expiry date Blackberries and Oranges no other fruit or veg.. that was in Morrisons..

Had to look this up. We call them sugar snap peas or snow peas.

Those empty produce shelves must have been shocking. o_O
actually we have Mange Tout and sugar snap peas . Sugar snaps have a rounder shape than mange tout, a crunchy texture and very sweet flavor. Mangetout are flat with very small peas inside and have a mild flavour. They are also called snow peas.

Permanent felt markers. They had several empty slots. I’ll have to check out a dollar store. Not sure why there’d be a shortage of these.

Today I went to the budget Hardware store ( Big Box).. Wilko for Brits.. and the shelves were half empty.. how they're paying their rent and rates I have no idea. I wanted a Vacuum flask.. they didn't have a single one...

Believe it or not Chicken.

There's a massive outbreak of avian flu worldwide impacting poultry and egg availability and prices. Last I read, Australia is the only place so far unaffected so I'm guessing Aussie producers can probably sell for much higher prices globally than what in-country buyers are willing to pay.

According to the article, these are the shortages to expect (along with how they'll likely affect me personally)
1. Beef (don't eat it)
2. Lettuce (might be pricier but it'll be around)
3. Beer (ditto how I feel about lettuce - and don't buy that much anyway)
4. Champagne (don't care)
5. Oranges (have a tree in the yard and frozen concentrate in the freezer so I'm covered)
6. Cooking oil (use about 2 liters a year between popcorn and biscotti. If it goes up a few dollars, I'll cope)
7. Butter (noticed a price drop of 20% from the holidays. I'll buy a few Costco 4 lb packs and freeze them in Ziplocs.)
8. Corn (rarely eat it)
9. Eggs (prices are already dropping, and there are plenty of good baking substitutes)
10. Tomatoes (will plant some next month and maintain a strong stash of canned tomatoes in the pantry)
11. Bread (don't eat much and can bake my own)
12. Olive oil (use less than 2 liters a year and have that much in my backup pantry already)
13. Infant formula (don't need it)

Point is, shortages or higher prices on most of the list won't change most people's lives. Assuming the predictions hold true, substitutes can be found for virtually everything except infant formula (for women who can't nurse).

Forewarned being forearmed, people can anticipate and stock their pantries accordingly.

Quite the contrary, I believe most of these items are staples in the average person’s life.
You live in a prime location and are lucky to have fresh oranges, etc nearby.
Making bread will still be expensive because it’s the flour and grains that will be in shorter supply or more expensive to grow. Same for oils.
Corn is a popular vegetable and some oils are made from it.
Eggs prices are dropping somewhat. Any of the substitutes I looked at are much pricier. For some, eggs are a nutritious and inexpensive meal.
Olive oil is the main type I use. When looking at the double pack from Costco, I re-read the BB date. I think it’s past date. 11-02-23? I still have a full bottle and a little bit left over.

For those lucky enough to not worry about the cost of groceries, the upward prices will just be annoying. For those living payday to payday, these make a big difference. They can’t pre-fill a pantry. I‘m in the lucky category, right now.

For sure.

The Egg situation does not bother me, as I buy mine from neighbors, the chicken however does.

Took a couple of things to the thrift store and ended up with two more things, both brand new. Nearly made it out of the store with nothing then I spotted a really cute cotton dress for summer. Then a housecoat. $20 for both. I don’t like the colour of the housecoat. For $5 I can tolerate it, since it’s the style I was looking for. 3/4 length sleeves, pockets, no collar. Just a colour I detest.

I was able to get everything on my list except a small round pizza they usually have in the deli. They had large rectangular pizzas, though, but more than I wanted. I also bought Brussels sprouts and 'baby cut' carrots, but had to but the large bags (2 pounds size). I didn't see the usual smaller bags. The carrots will keep and I eat them almost every day, but I had to blanch the BS before freezing. I lilke BS, but having to eat 2 pounds in a few days is a bit much for one person. I just wonder why all of a sudden there are big bags and containers appearing in the store as opposed to the usual smaller sizes.

you talking baout large rectangular pizzas..Deb. Here we have those large rectangular ones and as you say, it's too much for one, but irritatingly.. the large one costs £4.99 ..ish.. and the half size one costs £3.99.. that annoys the heck outta me, so generally I don't buy at all, because I'm not a great lover of Pizza so I wouldn't want to have it 2 days in a row...

The entire freezer section of Family Dollar was empty, so no chicken pot stickers. I asked a guy who seemed to be the manager about it and he acted like he was on quaaludes. However, Dollar General had them. Couldn't find store brand hazelnut spread anywhere. Grocery had Nutella at over $7 a jar. For that I can do without. I just though it would make a good frosting for the birthday cake I'm making.

I can't find my favorite lotion, Nubian Heritage (NH) Mango Butter anywhere! I got the last bottle Ebay had a couple of months ago. This past week I tried Amazon, Lucky Vitamin and the NH website. We even went to an out of town Islamic book store that carries NH products and they had other NH products but not the Mango Butter. The man behind the counter told me that NH sold most of their interest in the company. I ordered the next best thing from Amazon last night.. NH Coconut Papaya lotion. I also ordered Shea Moisture Coconut lotion because I like some of their products too. I'm hoping their lotion is as rich as NH. Turn the Mango Butter bottle upside down and the lotion does not spill out.

@OneEyedDiva - I've looked, and you're right! It's out of stock everywhere. I wonder if it's being discontinued. 🤔 However, I did find it here > https://www.houseofnubian.com/Mango-Butter-Lotion.aspx... but I've never ordered from this site.
