According to the article, these are the shortages to expect (along with how they'll likely affect me personally)
1. Beef (don't eat it)
2. Lettuce (might be pricier but it'll be around)
3. Beer (ditto how I feel about lettuce - and don't buy that much anyway)
4. Champagne (don't care)
5. Oranges (have a tree in the yard and frozen concentrate in the freezer so I'm covered)
6. Cooking oil (use about 2 liters a year between popcorn and biscotti. If it goes up a few dollars, I'll cope)
7. Butter (noticed a price drop of 20% from the holidays. I'll buy a few Costco 4 lb packs and freeze them in Ziplocs.)
8. Corn (rarely eat it)
9. Eggs (prices are already dropping, and there are plenty of good baking substitutes)
10. Tomatoes (will plant some next month and maintain a strong stash of canned tomatoes in the pantry)
11. Bread (don't eat much and can bake my own)
12. Olive oil (use less than 2 liters a year and have that much in my backup pantry already)
13. Infant formula (don't need it)
Point is, shortages or higher prices on most of the list won't change most people's lives. Assuming the predictions hold true, substitutes can be found for virtually everything except infant formula (for women who can't nurse).
Forewarned being forearmed, people can anticipate and stock their pantries accordingly.
