What kind of books/movies/stories do you not like?

"The Piano". It is full of clichés. The mute woman, who isn't mute, but chooses not to speak. And so on, and so on.
I'll not tell the story in detail, since it's just too ridiculous. If you'd like to read it:

In my opinion the movie is much overrated and so is the director Jane Campion.
I'm anticipating much protest. Feel free to comment!

Horror ! The other night my husband and I made the mistake of watching a movie called ‘Mother’ that turned into something similar to Rosemary’s baby. We had to switch it off as it became too graphic. It was the strangest story ever.

Science Fiction isn’t something I normally like either although there have been many I do.

Action movies that are too violent
Husband loves them though so we have to compromise often.

The Piano isn’t a movie I’d care for either.

I’m not a fan of stupid funny either.

Movies with subtitles

With books I’m not into ones that are far too detailed otherwise I lose the plot.
I can read scary books though like thrillers.

History books that involve wars I don’t like but they are my husbands favourite

Books that have too many characters otherwise I can’t keep track of them

No protest from me.

Books:

I don't like most "genres" other than mysteries. No mystery, no story! Unless the writer is brilliant, e.g., science fiction by China Miéville.

Even with mysteries, I don't like them if there's a lot about the detective's personal life, or if the mystery focuses on a family ("Her son was kidnapped"; "His wife wasn't who she seemed").

Movies:

With movies I'm a bit more accepting. I still don't like romances though. Or action that's so fast that I have no idea who survived the battle or the car chase.

The Piano was released in the late 90s. I've never seen it, but maybe it just didn't age well.

Directors like Jane Campion and a few "progressive" film producers and studios are cranking out films and series these days that I just can't stomach. Films and series that cram "the message" down our throats, that totally ruin the franchises they've been bequeathed, like Star Wars, and DC and Marvel Comics, completely abandoning the worlds they've built and the quests for peaceful societies they once represented. Even Disney has abandoned its wholesome values in order to push "the message" down children's throats.

If I see one more teenage or 20-something girl smart-alek her way through an otherwise reasonable and necessary debate on strategy, or destroy an entire criminal organization that's managed to "outsmart" the Justice League or whomever for 50 years with one stroke of her petite open fist, or invents some magical tool no one ever thought of before or wipes out an entire race of beings just to move the plot along or add action content, I will hurl all over the theater seats.

I don't even like to go to the theater anymore. It's not worth it when I can get "the message" crammed down my throat for free just by logging onto my PC or turning on my television. At least then, if I unintentionally get slapped with "the message," I can vomit in my own toilet.

I watch very few action and almost no sci-fi movies. I don't care for scenes to be flashed before my eyes and lots of noise when the crashes and sword/laser beams collide.
I much prefer interaction of characters, their personalities, what makes them chose one decision over another.

Books are the same. No sci-fi or deliberate horror. The author must present the story in a cadence and likeability that flows, not jumping from one scenario to the next in an attempt to put the reader off pace. I watch for emotions, not reactions.

Exactly the same with me.

I do not like romance, horror, or science fiction movies or books.
I dislike the Cohen Brothers movies very, very much. "Barton Fink" or "O Brother, Where Art Thou" especially.
I agree with George1959 regarding the film "The Piano".
Another film comes to mind that I absolutely hate is "Natural Born Killers".

I don’t watch or read horror.

I’m sick and tired of movies/books where a teenager saves the world .

I like American western movies but have got to where I can’t watch them because something awful always happens to good innocent people. I know, of course, that in the settling of the American West terrible things did happen. But it’s still hard to watch.

I don't like horror books (I should add "any longer" because I used to!) There was a time I really enjoyed Stephen King... but I always steered clear of Clive Barker because I heard Stephen say it's the only writer who truly scares him with their stories. I figured someone who can scare Stephen King isn't a person I'd want to read. :giggle:

I love Sci-Fi, every series since the original Star Trek.

I will be sorry to see The Blacklist end it's long run but it's time for Redd to fade into the sunset.

The Handmaids Tale, hope there is a sequel.

And probably most of you never heard of this series but I am watching Corner Gas for the second time around, Corny but fun.
