That looks like the Hakea petiolaris that I just planted in my garden. I saw my first one in the parking strip of garden design and nursery guy from your corner of the world. I was as smitten by the foliage as I was by the flowers. I sure hope my youngster does well.

Went out early yesterday morning and took a few snaps in the back garden. The park east of us has large trees which blocks the morning sun except for a short window of time when the rays slice in under t TH e trees.

My now two year old McNab, Ember beside the pond above.

Below looking from near the pond north toward an overtaxed arbor hold in a huge Sally Holmes rise and Podranea vine.

One more up on the corner deck where the vining shrub Cantua buxifolia is full of magenta flowers.

This Hakea petiolaris that you are growing has to be the most unique plants I’ve ever seen and your garden one of the most beautiful personal gardens I’ve ever seen. You are an incredible gardener.

I loved that Hakea the first time I saw it. Gardening for me has involved a lot of obsession for plants that catch my eye. In fact when I first started storing/posting photos at Flickr everyone posted under contrived usernames and mine was Serialplantfetishist which was fun as well as descriptive. There are other amazing Hakeas I've seen in photos, some with leaves even more striking than these. I found mine at The Ruth Bancroft Garden in Walnut Creek where Troy McGregor used to be the head of the nursery. Now he has a nursery not far away which is open only two days/week so far.

You’re very kind but honestly this is my first and only attempt at making a garden, something I was never drawn to do until I saw this particular garden not too far from me. After that I was driven to do so. If our climate wasn't so easy it might have been too much but here, if you get it in the ground, it just might make it.

WHAT??? This is your first attempt at gardening? 😱 You’ve got green thumbs and fingers. You must be a natural gardener. You clearly love it. Your plants show that. I can understand you being influenced by that other garden but honestly, yours looks better.
Do you grow any clematis? How long have you been gardening? I can’t believe this is your first garden. That’s incredible.

I started about 30 years ago and I don’t get discouraged if I lose a plant and am not afraid to move a plant to get it to just the right place. Lots of trial and error.

The only clematis I grow now is C. Armandii ‘Apple Blossom’ which grows big and is very nicely scented.

Ok! Thirty years is a long time gardening.
It must have been you who posted pics of your Apple Blossom. That IS a very floriferous type. I’m thinking of getting that type myself. I’ve grown so many different types and love them. Thanks for the pic. It’s beautiful.
