What I couldn't get this week shopping

The closest supermarket is almost totally void of their brand of ice creams. They had 3 cartons of strawberry, 4 of butter pecan and 1 of cookie dough. I grabbed the cookie dough - it may the last container in the world. Also no Ben's 'microwave in the bag' rices.

I had an unusual experience with WalMart this week. I placed an overnight order to pick up the next morning, about $75 and 15 items. I got a message in the middle of the night saying they didn't have more than half the items and asking if I wanted to cancel the order. The message said I could cancel by 1:45 am. It was 2 am when I saw the message but I canceled anyway and they accepted the cancellation. Has anyone else had this happen? 🤷‍♀️

The next morning I placed the same order with Safeway and got all but one item.

I couldn't get the brand of frozen waffles I've been buying, so I settled for pancakes instead. They had Eggos, but they are more than I want to pay when not on sale. I also haven't seen French cut green beans in a long time. I've only see whole and cut. So I buy the cut.

There were no great value kettle cooked potato chips for the second week in a row. There regular potato chips are not good so I have done without chips for 2 weeks.

I went to another store to stock up on meat for the freezer. I wanted to pick up some mung bean sprouts for a stir fry but they did not have any in stock. I have tried the canned but they are no substitute for fresh. This is the only grocery store close that carries them.

I wish someone would open an asian store in our community. Seems to me we have a large asian population and asian food is quite popular so it would seem a good market. I just can't understand it, we have many latino markets that I frequently shop at. I guess I will have to wait. There are a few in the larger cities nearby but not close enough for me to make a special trip.

Hellmans Mayonaise..unless the hugest jar. Tried.. 4 different supermarkets..all only had squeezy bottle of Heinz ( don't like heinz or squeezy bottles).. or Supermarket own Brand..

I'm with you on the Hellmann's brand, got to have it.
Interesting that it is owned by Unilever, a British company.

Some of the other brands they control:

Knorr, Klondike, Breyers, Degree, Dove, Q-tip, Pond's, Popsicle,
Suave, Vaseline, and many more.

I wanted to get some Ben's microwave basmati rice. They had it, but it went from $2.79 a pouch to $5.39 since I last purchased it. This is the first time I've seen it in the store in about a month. I was so miffed I asked at the courtesy desk why almost double the price. All I got was an unknowing shrug.
Goodness and I thought it had risen in price astronomically here since last month. It regularly sells for around £1.25 per pouch..often on sale for £1 but this month.all stores are selling it at £1.40 and above. I refuse to pay that price so I get an alternative..usually Tilda...

You're savvy enough, I assume,to compare the unit price per 100g of the different brands. As I (vaguely) recall though, Tilda™ is often sold in smaller pack sizes and often works out more expensive. You've done well to snaffle a bargain (y)

Nope the tilda rice is also 250grm and retails at 95p per pouch

Again no Great Value Butter. I picked out Land o Lakes. If it tastes better I'll just buy that from now on. Cats gotta have their butter you know.
I remember my mom used to get so mad at our cat when she forgot to take the butter off the table. When she went back to the kitchen she'd find cat tongue gullys in the top of the butter. He must have checked out the table after every meal!

I used to always buy Land 'O Lakes butter, even tho' it cost a bit more. But with rising costs across the board, I'll buy off brand or what's on sale.

Plus I got mad when they removed the Indian woman from the box! I loved that label and used to think she was a Princess when I was little.

I understand..I hated when they took Uncle Ben off the packet... all for political correctness.. but we identified with those people..

I never knew this about cats! When I was growing up our butter was always refrigerated so the cat never had a chance at it. Had a dog when I was single - and pretty much ever since.

DH is allergic to cats, so haven't had a cat since I left my parents' house in my late teens.

@StarSong. I did a few quick searches. Nothing ever seems to be as clear as we think.

Colonel Sanders was real. The designation of colonel was an honorary one. Some sites showed that he was a fighter and was fired from four jobs because of this. He certainly was tenacious about his products. After he sold, he was the spokesperson and not happy about the food. There was a lawsuit against him for maligning the food.

Mars said in the summer that Uncle Ben was a fictional character whose name was first used in 1946 as a reference to an African American Texan rice farmer. The image used on Uncle Ben packaging was a “beloved Chicago chef and waiter named Frank Brown”, the company said.

  • Aunt Jemima is based on a real woman, Nancy Green, who was a storyteller, cook, and missionary worker.
  • Nancy Green actually worked with the Aunt Jemima brand until 1923.

The package image of Aunt Jemima was inspired by Nancy Green, and it certainly reinforced the fact that she'd been born a slave.
One rendition of Nancy Green’s portrait as Aunt Jemima. Quaker Oats bought the brand in 1926.

By 1923 the image was updated, but still reinforced racial stereotypes of a Black "mammy" - the submissive plantation slave who (happily) cooked, cleaned and lovingly raised the children of the White masters.
Aunt Jemima Ad

Yes, the image was updated over the years, but it wasn't until very recently that Aunt Jemima looked like a contemporary Black woman. The 1950-1968 image is burned into my memory and the message I got from it was definitely one of a "Mammy" slave/servant.

If I were Black, I'd find the history of these images so offensive that I'd want them removed completely. Even as a White woman I'm happy to see them banished to the dustbin.

Uncle Ben's image history is no less couched in racism than Aunt Jemima's was. (The Uncle Ben on the package was not the rice farmer, but a hotel maitre d'.)

"To begin with, the name of the brand reflects the practice of white Southerners addressing elderly African-Americans as “uncle” and “aunt.” That was because the words “Mr.” and “Mrs.” were considered not suitable. Another popular brand using the same approach was Aunt Jemima.
Another part of the stereotype (which disappeared from the logo in 2016) was the bow tie, which reminded servants and Pullman porters."

@StarSong. The images started out in the style of the day and advanced to what they were just a few years ago. Thanks for explanation on how they devolved and why the sensitivity towards them.
