I'm not sure how I want to explain 'Jazz Fusion'.
Anyone who has been on this forum for a while will know I listen to a LOT of Jazz.
It is something I could never explain fully; why all types of this music affect me.
While in the High School band, my instructor was a huge Jazz Fusion fan and told me something
I'll never forget.
I was struggling with the Trombone and he turned me on to Bill Watrous.
"Fusion is music that has a structure, even if it sounds disjointed.
It is music that has mutual respect for the members playing with you.
You feed off what they put down and expand when you can.
Remember this, ' Structure, notes, but the Phrasing is the anchor."
He told me to listen to Benny Goodman's big band to understand Phrasing.
No matter how good you are technically, also remember the structure of the song
and return to the anchor (phrasing)
Jazz Fusion is taking music to the edge and looking over.
As an example, Jean Luc Ponty was a major artist from the 70's.
He saw the edge.
Feel like saying, 'Class Dismissed'.
Sorry, didn't mean for this to sound like a lecture, just a passion I have for the music.
Next week, 'Why the 4 movements of Beethoven's 9th, is the Greatest piece of Music Ever Written...'
(There I go again, putting on my teacher's hat. Sorry again...)
