A Nice Walk ( with photos )

Today is a rainy day with a high of 11 degrees so a tad chilly. We put sweaters on the dogs and ourselves.

IMG_6378.jpeg

For some reason I was not really into walking but our dogs depend on us taking them. We ran into other dogs and our little dog went nuts. We will have to work on socializing him some more.

It’s a nice time of year. The leaves are all changing colour and many have their houses decorated for Halloween. I thought this decoration was really cute. It certainly made me smile. Poor ghosts. lol 😂

Beets grown from seed. Planted late in the season. View attachment 373436
We call them Beetroot @PeppermintPatty i buy them fresh / boil / slice and add a mix of vinegar / sugar / spices
I love a slice of pickled beetroot when I have veggies and a grilled lamb chop , DH used to say that’s strange eating cold pickled foods with hot foods ….but guess who eats the same when I have it with my hot food …..
Our neighbour loves my pickled BR as well, I only make it in warmer months when it’s nice and fresh and plenty of supplies in the shop.

Same neighbours are coming over for a roast chicken meal tonite ….so I’ve gotta go soon and make our desert which is going to Lemon Delicious pudding …it’s like a sponge top with a lemon sauce underneath
it’s all mixed together but separates during cooking process …I make it extra …lemony by adding the juice from a extra lemon

This will be our first time pickling beetroots. I really love pickled beetroots and they are packed with iron. My husband has been told he’s low in iron so he’s eating liver once a week and planning on eating beets. Luckily he likes them too.

Tonight the sun was shining on the trees in front of our house… and intensifying their colours.

This is my go to recipe …for beetroot @PeppermintPatty it’s got just the right “tang” and lasts for months in the fridge …..Our neighbours are younger then us Vicki is 20 years younger then me …but she never makes anything homemade like pickles / chutneys fruit preserves but the eat a jar of my tomato relish in a week when I decide to give them a jar or two ..same with the beetroot…..I’ve got this odd habit after our BR has been used ..I wash the jars and put them back in the fridge ( empty ) so they don’t get used for anything other than my br jars 😀😀and I know exactly where they are when I want to pickle more

Vicki probably loves getting pickled beetroots and other bottled things. What’s BR stand for?

We reuse our jars for tomato’ sauce, chutneys, relishes, and apple sauce. We are probably more picky about the bottles we use to do meats, like pork, moose or beef. We had ‘one’ can explode on us but considering how often we can stuff, one bottle exploding isn’t too bad.

Note: we have a storage cellar with a wooden cabinet in it made exclusively for storing bottles.

Is that YOUR recipe Kadee? It says Kaye

Thank you for the recipe. We already made the BR’s. Oddly enough the recipe was very close. We didn’t add the last 3 ingredients. We will eat some this thanksgiving and save the rest for at least 2 weeks.

Here’s our pickled beets. Only 3 jars

Took a walk in the redwoods today. Lots of bikers, runners and dog walkers so Ember got to meet many of her own kind. Early on Lia snapped this one of me, Ember and another fellow with his border collie.

The path follows a nearly dry stream on our left.

Hi @MarkD
Love your photos
The border collie looks a lot like your dog
Did they get along? Our older dog gets along well with other dogs but our youngest doesn’t. He really causes drama whenever we met other dogs.

I like the size and health of the trees you photograph. The trees are so tall.
Your wife Lia, looks like she enjoys taking a lot of pictures.

Thanks for sharing your lovely walk

Beautiful photos @MarkD , I lIke Lia’s walker as we call them ……
…Tell Lia I love her name …it’s loverly.

My working days involved taking people on outings and those heavy walkers way back them were cumbersome and awkward to get in and out of the car .

Some of the clients used to hate using a walker, but it’s far better using one than falling and suffering a broken hip or worse ….

I got one from a op shop ( charity shop ) when my hubby slipped on his smooth concrete shed floor 3 years ago ….
( he had wet shoes on )
He broke the ball part of his hip and had to have an emergency replacement ( he was flown in a helicopter from near home to the city ) Adelaide ….the Walker gave him heaps of independence while recovering

I’d be happy to have you over for an evening meal but I don’t eat lamb. How about steak or Salsbury steak with mushroom sauce. It’s REALLY good. We’ll eat an entire bottle of pickled beetroots.

They would have had a lot of fun running around that field. But you can tell from Ember’s tail that she is keen to say she is top dog. The Border will probably wind up a little bigger but for now they’re pretty close. Being less than a year old the puppy was happy to concede Ember’s status but there was no hostility. Both thoroughly sniffed the other, there not being much more to do on leash.

We call it a walker too. The wheels are larger which works better on more surfaces but in deep sand I have to help pull her through. That only happens at the beach where sand blows over the path.

“Lia” is the Italian form of Leah and she was named after her father’s sister. He was the only one in his family not born in Italy. I’m sorry that happened to your husband. I hope it isn’t still painful for him.

This winter has been very cold @MarkD and he’s been suffering from a very cold hip ….so I bought him a throw lap type electric blanket for when he‘s sitting on the lounge .
The old walker I got for him ..it was only used for walking on floors not any rough surfaces so it was good to carry any bits he wanted from room to room or go outside to sit on the back verandah, also got him a shower chair / a pick up stick and a walking frame ( no wheels ) just those pick up move / step types

Yes! I agree. Their dog posture spoke volumes. Embers tail was straight up while the other dogs tail was straight down. 😂 No guessing who felt more confident and in charge.

Today we went for a 3.4 kilometre walk along the nature trail. We’ve been here several times and will be going here more once the season closes which is soon.
IMG_6407.jpeg
It was fairly windy and cool today so everyone had sweaters on including the dogs. We met another couple who had a dog with the same doggie raincoat we have for ours but his was yellow where ours are red.
IMG_6410.jpeg

The trees are really changing colour. Autumn really is a lovely season isn’t it? The air is so crisp and fresh.

It almost rained while we were out. It basically started spitting raindrops but then stopped.

IMG_6422.jpeg

On the way back another rainbow started but by the time we turned around to take a picture it faded away.
IMG_6428.jpeg
It’s one mile from our house.
Have a great day everyone.

Thanks for the invite …save the steak till I get there tomorrow …🤣🤣🤣
Wow Kadee. I ‘can’ understand the desire to make your own pickled beets. They really are fabulous. It’s only been 2 days. Normally we’d wait for at least 2 weeks to open them but we opened a bottle today to have with our turkey dinner and they really ARE far better than store bought. If you lived closer I really would invite you for dinner. In the meantime we’ll happily scoop your recipe. We have cinnamon sticks. We make our own cinnamon tea. It makes a fabulous tea. Apparently cinnamon is great for lowering blood pressure and blood sugar AND it does a great job of leaving a nice scent in the house. Between our air exchanger and all the cooking we do, our house always smells nice.
