American Gothic/Fantasy/Thriller
A disturbing and neurotic movie.
It tells the story of two eccentric sisters who live secluded in their family's grand mansion, haunted by a dark secret that threatens their delicate existence.
I was rather frustrated with the character - Merricat. She did not show enough fight and relied on her "spells" in the hopes of getting things to go her way.
 

I went out to the movies on Saturday with a couple of friends to see Highest 2 Lowest, a new Spike Lee. (The original movie, by Kurosawa, was made in the 60s, is streaming on MAX and I'm going to watch it soon.) I love Spike Lee's films, he's such a devout New Yorker, and this one was a love letter to the city.

I remember reading this book as a teenager. Left a big impression on me, obviously!

The Naked Gun (2025)

I was anxiously anticipating this one, and it didn't disappoint. It's full of belly laughs, and although a few of the set-ups don't land, the movie is a riot. A second viewing would be necessary to take in all the gags.

I was curious if Liam Neeson could handle the comedy playing the clueless Frank Drebin, Leslie Nielson's part in the original films, but he handled it with ease. It was refreshing to see Neeson in a comic role after all the heavy action thrillers he's done.

Pamela Anderson was dynamite as Beth Davenport, Drebin's eventual love interest. No one could have played that part better, and much has been made of the Neeson/Anderson chemistry, both in the movie and off screen.

The story is important only as a vehicle on which to pile all the jokes and sight gags. There is doomsday device which tries to be stolen, that when activated turns all common people viciously against each other, killing everyone off, while a group of billionaires will be safely holed up in a bunker. There are plenty of side stories.

Another highlight is Danny Huston's portrayal of a billionaire bad guy. He plays the part perfectly. It would have been easy to over play the part, or make it silly. Huston plays it just right, making it seem believable.

I hope they do another "Naked Gun" film. If you haven't had enough genuine laughs in awhile, you'll get some side splitters with this one.

Just finished watching “Sanctified” on Amazon with Ed. He likes westerns; I’ve never watched many.

I’m not quite sure what to make of the story. The acting was good and the scenery beautiful in an austere way.

Anyone else seen it and what did you think?
 
The last was Maxine's Baby about the life of Tyler Perry. That he was able to rise above the kind of abuse he suffered as a child...verbal, physical and sexual and become who he is today is a miracle! His perseverance during struggles to get his plays performed despite being homeless and facing rejections is remarkable. I started the doc months ago and just got back to it today. It's angering, heartbreaking, fascinating and inspirational. I expect to finish it this weekend.

His father cursed him with the foulest language since he was a little boy and told him he wasn't going to be sh*t, that he wouldn't amount to anything. Now Tyler is a billionaire and from what I heard, he helped his aging father (who he found out isn't his biological father) despite the severe mistreatment and hatred that he felt all those years. He's also paying it forward to those in need, big time.



I also started watching Lilo & Stitch, partly because of the hype and because even though I think Stitch is cute, I never watched the cartoon and wanted to see what they did with the live action version. So far I'm liking it. Lilo, the little girl, was bullied and made to feel less than. So many of us can relate to that. No wonder the film has grossed over one billion dollars. She and Stitch, who is a one alien wrecking crew, who pretends to be a dog so he can be adopted, form a tight bond. So far, I also like the other characters, including the different alien species. Some parts are silly, but of course it was made for children.

 
We just watched The Long Walk at the theater. It was adapted from an early Stephen King book. It was fascinating but disturbing and graphic at the same time. It is set in a poor, dystopian society where young men are recruited to walk at least 3 mph until they can no longer keep up. After 3 warnings of slowing down, they are shot. The winner receives a cash prize or whatever he wishes. It is not for the faint of heart.

Again, it's disturbing and violent, but it really is about the personalities of the young men and the bonds they form while heading for the finish line. The characters are so well-developed that I actually had a tear in my eye when some died. It is very Hunger Games.

This is a fantastic drama , what a courageous lady she was. A brilliant story well told this has fantastic acting throughout. Sheridan Smith is a fantastic actress and she embodies every character she plays. I love watching her. Don't hesitate to watch this drama. You will not be disappointed. It's very poignant and emotional.
