What's your favorite AI assistant?

I often use Google Gemini, simply because it's right there on the Google search engine. Sometimes it just makes up crap, though, so I don't trust it.

ChatGPT seems to be more accurate, but now that they're assisting the U.S. government to spy on its people and to control fully autonomous weapons, I'm not so sure I want to use it.

So what's your preferred AI assistant and why?

Our favourite AI source is called Chat GPT.
I’ve named him Morgan. šŸ˜‚
He answers all our questions fully and completely. We actually use him a lot.
I know he’s not really a man but I feel better about using the service knowing he has a name. I’m thrilled with the help he gives us.
Yeah, I use AI all the time!

I didn't know what a couple of the buttons did on my entertainment center remote, and rather than have to wade through the manual that was probably written by somebody who speaks English as their second language, I just asked AI. Granted, sometimes the info it gives isn't accurate, but most of the time it is.

I use Copilot, the assistant built into Windows 11. It isn’t perfect, it occasionally slips up, and it absolutely refuses to wade into anything political, but it has genuinely helped me fix several problems on my PC. One example stands out: my mouse has a small wheel that controls the volume, and it kept cutting out at random. I got tired of rebooting just to get it working again, so I asked Copilot what might be causing it. After some digging, it traced the issue to my antivirus software, which was mistakenly flagging the feature as suspicious. Copilot told me exactly which file to whitelist and walked me through how to do it. I never would have solved that on my own.

I use chatgpt, but will be migrating to gemini, because gemini can easily refer to YouTube videos for more information. Gemini can also summarize any YouTube video for you. Chatgpt is blocked by google's youtube.

Like @Rich, I use Copilot. It has helped me resolve technical problems and is incredibly useful in so many areas. It is an immense time saver and can be quite creative when called upon. Once you tap into that potential, it's very difficult to go back to living without it. On my smartphone, the AI agent is Gemini, and it's amazingly resourceful.

My browser defaults to Google, so that's what I generally use. If it's something important I use Perplexity because it gives me its sources.
I used Google the other day to answer one of those useless questions I come up with. Where does my co-op get its power from? Google said hydroelectric. I wasn't satisfied so I dug deeper. Turns out the hydroelectric dam has been out of commission for decades. We buy our power from other sources now.

Sounds like Gemini is trying to gain an unfair advantage over ChatGPT.

I tend to overthink things, and using AI as an assistant, it can stop me from doing that. Often, the simplest solution is the best solution (Occam's razor).

Courtesy of Gemini...

The principle that the simplest solution is usually best is known as Occam’s Razor (or the law of parsimony), which suggests that when faced with competing hypotheses, the one with the fewest assumptions is likely correct. It is a problem-solving guide used to avoid overcomplicating scenarios. However, this is a heuristic, not an absolute rule, as simpler solutions can sometimes be incorrect or less effective than more complex ones.

Key aspects of this principle include:
  • Definition: Originating from 14th-century philosopher William of Ockham, it suggests, "Entities should not be multiplied beyond necessity".
  • Application: It is used in science, data, and daily life to choose the most efficient, straightforward answer when multiple options yield the same result.
  • Limitations: The simplest answer is not always the correct one; it is a tool for thought rather than a guaranteed truth.
  • Alternative View: Einstein’s take was to make things "as simple as possible, but not simpler".
I made the mistake of using "features" in my audio amplifier that did nothing to enhance the sound but instead, muddied it and made it harsh sounding. I turned them all off and now the sound is crystal clear.

Actually, some of the "features" got turned on accidently -- probably when picking up the remote and inadvertently hitting one of the buttons by mistake, which is extremely easy to do. Remotes should have an on-off switch to prevent that from happening.

I had been using CHATGPT alot, but lately I just use Gemini (or whatever it is called that is accessible from the Google search bar).

I'm not sure how to change the CHATGPT personality, it is nice but quite sycophantic.

Chat GPT really seems to have the best "personality" of all the clients I've tried.

@RambleTamble I suspect all technology spies on us in one way or another - always looking for a way to make a buck!

I told Chatgpt what personality traits I like and it adjusted accordingly. I have it tuned in pretty good now.

You do run out of questions at a point, whereas, Google's AI let's you ask endless questions - but it really doesn't have much of a personality.

It’s got a great personality. It even remembers our dogs names and stuff that was mentioned years ago. I really like it. I know with AI you’re not suppose to thank them but I always do. Chat GPT is so ultra polite.

Yes, I wish AI would keep up with the times, they consistently report outdated stuff. But it's up to us to verify.

Absolutely agreed. As it happens, I had mentioned to husband and son, respectively, over the last five or so days that we need a new microwave. Just one mention to each of them. It wasn't a conversation either time. Just, "We really need a new microwave." -kind of comment.

I didn't "talk" about it or look into it online in any way.

Today, my husband mentioned that he'd noticed the microwave I'd put into our Amazon cart and subsequently did some further shopping. I didn't put a microwave into our Amazon cart. I didn't even look for a microwave on Amazon or anywhere else. The one in the cart was a Galanz, a brand of appliance I like and was looking into heavily a few years ago.

So I said, "We need a new microwave," twice over the span of a few days and today a microwave of a brand I like popped into my Amazon cart. Not in the suggested list of things I might like, in my cart.
