Wishing a Joyful Winter Solstice to all who celebrate.

Okay, so half the world gets brighter from now on.

I've been reading about the vehicle attack in Melbourne. What I've read said the authorities believe it was mental illness, not terrorism. Not that it makes people any less injured, but the alert level goes down.

Only the Northern Hemisphere will get brighter. The other half of the world will get darker!

But that's OK, Smiling Jane...This ain't a Geography class, and a Happy Winter Solstice to you too!

Hal

Thanks, Hal. I already got schooled in geography by Warrigal. I keep forgetting the SF is international.

Provided that the sun moves higher tomorrow, we'll know that spring has begun and begin the feast of Sol Invictus. However, if it does not rise we shall know that it fell into into the sea and we are in very deep do-do.

Warrigal apologises for her grumpiness.
Just remember that there is a counterweight to your "world" that is known as the Antipodes.

You guys have many venomous snakes and lots of other creepy species featured on nature shows. How could I forget? I lost track of a guy who went to grade school and high school with me. We were the shortest kids in the class so we were always seated in the front of the room. I recently got word he died, after having lived in Australia from the time he graduated college during the Vietnam debacle.

Thank you, Smiling Jane. We had a special meal with our friends who own the smallholding where we raise the sheep and pigs. We sampled the first of the rare breed (Ryeland) lamb and it was delicious. We drank to the year gone past and looked forward to the year to come. There's a break in the gardening work now, but Mrs.L is already looking at what we will grow in the coming year.

Hope that everyone had a joyous Solstice - the real reason for the season.

We didn't eat anything as special as your rare breed lamb, but we had a pit-roasted hog (raised by one of our group). That's my favorite way to eat pork. We also had huge pans of roasted root vegetables, several different kinds of bread and pumpkin, apple and pecan slab pies. I don't think I could eat today if I tried. it was wonderful, a very happy celebration.

I've read somewhere that the Solstice is celebrated widely, but forgot how and by whom...

Wiccans: Winter Solstice (December 21st) Also known as Yule. This is the shortest day of the year. And, conversely, the longest night. Witches and warlocks celebrate the birth of the Sun God, as from this point forward the days get longer. Wiccan celebrations include yule logs, yule trees and Mistletoe.

Solstice is an ancient celebration throughout the world. It's not wiccan, and it's not about witches and warlocks. It's pagan, and much older than anything organized. If I wanted to get stuck watching some guy who dresses funny performing rituals, I would still be Catholic.
