Accidental school shooting - one dead, one injured.

I really want to know why they are saying it's "accidental". People are standing or sitting in front of a gun barrel and the trigger is pulled by someone else. Accidental???

Accidental shootings are usually because some idiot "thought" the gun was unloaded. It's not a big story because it was an accident... no terrorist plot. I'm sure the news manufacturers are bummed.

I agree! And was the gun "accidentally" at the school?? Guns don't usually get places or in someone's hands "accidentally." And in true accidental shootings, usually only one person is shot, not two.

I think the story smells.

James, according to reports, the boy with the gun is a football player and this took place in Alabama. It will probably be determined that the dead girl was at fault because she got in his way.

Alabama Inside reported that the boy who was injured was showing off the gun. It discharged and one bullet struck the girl. The boy's mother claims her son did not own a gun; if true, that makes it all the more suspicious.

Most of what I've read said it's all still up in the air.

The school at Birmingham, Alabama has metal detectors and school resource officers were on site at the time of the shooting but at dismissal time two students were shot - one fatally. Police are calling it an accidental shooting.

How does this happen?

I still maintain a good start would be to eliminate all bags carried to & into schools. No backpacks , book-bags, gym bags...etc. Make them carry all they need openly. If that requires more frequent trips to their lockers ? So be it...inconvenience or safety ? What's our priority ?

Good idea, rgp. The metal detectors don't seem to be working. Makes you wonder how effective they are at airports or anyplace else.

Geeeeeeeeeesh, just how much do some of today's parents really know about their kids? Actually, it seems if a lot of parents know much less about their kids than they say they do. The mother could also be trying to protect her son from prosecution and prison.

"It will probably be determined that the dead girl was at fault because she got in his way."

Not sure I understand ?

Alabama is among the most football-crazed states in the country. Surely you've heard of the Crimson Tide?

Yeah I have..but I do not follow mainstream sports. One reason is exactly what you seem to be hinting to ? The player being much more important than the girl.

I just didn't pickup on it, when first read.

Yes, she was going to school to become a nurse. He might end up being a football player.

No comparison.

No, I'm not saying it's right, only that it is.

I understand your point, and agree.

Our society has become so enamored with sports , it is just over-the-top. And I believe that causes too many other issues to be ignored ? overlooked ?.....jmo

......along with Hollyweird elitists.

rgp i was telling my daughter that the other day--they dont need back packs-- if the teaches would do the job that they were being paid for the kids wouldnt need homework --they are setting at their desks with cell phones in their hands --i have a friend that works at a school--the kids come out of school all hunched over from their back packs being so heavy--and half time the metal detectors arent turned on also security standing arround playing games

My daughters backpack weighs the same as a sub compact car. Honestly she has at least 3 hours homework each night nevermind the assignments on the weekends. Ridiculous.

What do "Hollywood elitists" or if someone chose to use it, "right wing gun nuts" have to do with an otherwise reasonable discussion. Do we always need political slams to make our point or has it become a knee jerk "them or us" behind every disagreement.

Funny, but to a point, I was thinking the same thing.

I'm a newcomer here and evaluating whether or not I want to continue or move on. It seems to me that our bashing mentality thanks to social media is replacing education as the method of communicating on a lot of forums. It's understandable among young people, but puzzling for mature adults.

Thanks for posting that link. I couldn't find any info on the shooting or the shooter.

I've often wondered about the need for such heavy school bags, when just about any textbook can be loaded onto a tablet - or can they? I'm out of the loop concerning schools these days but have been told kids are expected to have tablets. What do the kids carry in these bags?

Roll tide!! I don't see what that has to do with anything.
