A Shout Out to Olivia in Hawaii-----Hurricane "Lane" Category 5

We live in northeastern Florida. Have been since 2009 and look extremely forward to moving from here and Florida. Have been thru two tropical storms, the outer bands of Hurricane Mathew (50 miles off of Jacksonville Beach coast) and Hurricane Irma that pretty much came right over us. Like Olivia, we are not in an Evacuation Zone, so stayed in our apartment during both Mathew and Irma. Even when living in a No Evacuation Zone, it can still be darn scary.

As for me, I'd rather go thru a full-blown snow blizzard, and wife and I have before in Colorado, than a tropical storm or hurricane.

There are those that love living in Florida and Hawaii, as well as along the Gulf of Mexico and East Coast, but definitely not for us anymore. We are just hoping for the best, because we are really going into our hurricane season next month. Hopefully, the LAST hurricane season we have to endure.

Good Luck to you, Olivia and PLEASE stay safe. We are all thinking about you and praying for you.

Take the best care you can Olivia.. get to the safest place you can if it's at all possible.

We had a hurricane once about 12 years ago..it blew the roof off my house..I've never been so scared... so my thoughts are with you and yours to be safe!!

Oh, wow! That's terrible, holly. We do have hurricane clips on our roof. Just hope we won't be having to test it. Thank you.

Thank you for your prayers. CR. I hope you won't have to go through another hurricane before moving.

Overnight still a Category 4, but expected to weaken to a Cat 3. Somehow doesn't make me feel any better. Shelters on Oahu will be opened tomorrow at 10:00 a.m., but asking people not to go to one unless absolutely necessary. Just about all visitor sites closed since yesterday. Buses will stop running at 6:00 p.m. No trash pickups today or tomorrow. That I really don't like, but understandable. Some gas stations running low. Inventory in stores running really short. Major power outages could last for days. Basically though, still on wait and see.

Fingers crossed for you Olivia. Many large stores run on generators after the storms, so if you need any supplies and the roads aren't blocked, you might be able to get them. Be safe!

Hurricane Lane is the biggest weather threat to Hawaii in decades

" (CNN) - Hurricane Lane's outer bands have been pummeling Hawaii's Big Island with rain Thursday morning, triggering landslides and threatening serious flooding as the Category 4 cyclone moves perilously close to the Aloha State.

The center of the storm -- which could become the first major cyclone to make landfall in the state in 26 years -- is expected to move very close to the main islands or cross land Thursday through Friday, forecasters said.

It could be so devastating that authorities are urging residents to set aside two weeks' worth of food and water.

"Be prepared to shelter in place with 14 days of food supplies and water and any other necessities," Hawaii Gov. David Ige said at a news conference Wednesday."

Thank you for that article KingsX. I wasn't aware of all those things at all. Wow. Worse than I thought. And I definitely don't have a 14 day supply of food. Might have to munch on some of my dog's kibbles. I'm getting a supply of dog and cat food delivered today. They'll be okay at least. :D

Thank you, RR. I'm crossing my toes, legs and eyes. I really hope that we won't have a power outage, but I guess that's wishful thinking. I have my batteries, anyway.

I'll be keeping Olivia and other residents in Hawaii in my nightly prayers Sue

Thank you, Sue. We could sure use all the prayers we can get. So far nothing happening here on Oahu. Big Island is getting heavy rain but only on the south side. It was reported that by the time it gets to Oahu it might be a Cat 1. Even that is still bad but much better when compared with Cat 4. The hurricane has really slowed down which actually is bad because the bad weather would stick around longer. Just heard about the worst case would be if the hurricane made land. Horrible thought.

The storm seems to be scaling down....said to be a Cat/1 now. It also appears that the blood thirsty weather announcers & news folks in general have lost interest. Back when it was a Cat/5....they were all over it.

Well , good luck still to the folks in it's path. 1 or 5 I wouldn't want to deal with it.

Glad the storm is weakening, Olivia, although I know there was flooding and damage there.
I'm always glad when hurricane season has moved on.

Unfortunately, it's still a Cat 2, although eventually will weaken to a Cat 1, just don't know when. Lane is moving very slowly which means hanging around with heavy rains and winds for days. Lots of flooding expected.

I haven't been watching cable news at all so don't know how they've been reporting. There's one local TV station here that's been on 24/7 just on hurricane news and talking with the Pacific Hurricane Center people and reporting from each island.

Thank you for the good luck wish; we need it. And so true about whatever Category a hurricane may be; it's all bad.

Yes, for sure Big Island has had lots of flooding and heavy rain. On Oahu road closures and trees down and pockets of power outrages. And the hurricane itself hasn't even gotten here yet. Sadly, hurricane season still has about three more months to go--from June through November. And of all things, Maui now has a huge brush fire to contend with. They could really use the rain in that area now. Ironic.

I know, Cindy Lou, about you being concerned about Hurricane Season. You've had more than your share of it there. We in Hawaii have actually been mainly rather lucky. They say it's because of our wind shear and the trade winds that help push bad weather systems away from the islands. Poor Big Island gets it first most of the time and therefore many times protect the rest of the island chain from the worst. But not this time the system having come from the south rather than the east and had been moving north.

Thank you for that, KingX. Oahu is not expecting the hurricane to get here until Saturday morning. But we have on and off rain and gusty winds already. In fact all of the islands. Just a foretaste of what's to come.

You're welcome.

Thank you, everyone, for your prayers and good thoughts sent out to Hawaii. Hurricane Lane has bit the dust! It rapidly weakened today before being finally torn apart by wind shear. It is now a tropical storm and there will still be heavy rains with localized flooding on all the islands. Localized flooding is a big worry for those living on the coastline and near streams. There will be some wind gusts but no hurricane force winds! A very big relief.
