2024 - How's the Weather Where You Are?

5 today, and that feels kind of warm. Had some icey nights lately.

0C at the moment. A bit of snow fell overnight. Par for the course at this time of year.

I just hope that the snow/rain line runs South of us. Once the cold hits we're looking at -10 F or lower and cold drier snow is better than slush turning into rock. With the winds though -10 will feel more like -20 to -30. Ouch!

1" snow overnight, no wind, 28 degrees but might get to 40-southern tier NY
The coldest temp in NY ever recorded was minus 52 in Feb 1979.
We also had a wind day chill of minus 40 in 1989 and I was out in it, I had livestock to feed and also we were trying to cover a hay stack with a tarp- not a good idea.

One morning ,in 1990 I believe, the local farmers said it was close to 50 below, and our water froze up- but I knew where that freeze was- on my hose connectors.
Since I was used to the cold, I had to bring the hair dryer outside ,plug it in, and open the water area and within a few minutes, the water came back on, and since then I always insulate those connectors well and of course I have a heat tape on the pipes.

The sun had just come up and it started to snow a little- and it was Beautiful, and the small snow flakes looked like crystals with small rainbows.
There was no wind chill at all, and my only fear was that my farm boots would freeze to the ground.

I had to carry hot water to the barn, to unfreeze the water pans for the animals, but the sun began to warm things up.Our heater stayed on all day.

( about 20 plus years ago there was a house fire near me.

My daughter was home on leave from USAF and she also was a volunteer junior fireman before joining the Military.. We made pots of hot coffee for hours, for the fire men and also brought them fresh water. They were using water drawn from a local pond. No hydrants up here.

Our Fire Chief's gear was so wet that he froze to the seat in our pumper, and much of the hose water turned to ice immediately.)

I worked most of the day yesterday preparing for the hard freeze we're expecting to start tomorrow, I did find two heat lamps in the barn that will help.....everyone stay warm and safe.

Snow came, we had about 10" on the ground. I did essential path clearing with the snowblower & snow scoop. Two days later, a neighbor came over with the tractor and did major clearing. He does that two or three times during a winter, and we pay him for his time & toward fuel & tractor maintenance costs.

The skies have cleared, and it was predicted we'd have -23C (9.4F) overnight, though by very early morning the figure had turned out to be only -18C (.4F). Now, a couple hours later, it's slightly warmer. One thing about snow is it's reflective, so with snow on the trees & a thin coating on the ground and the clear sky, we've got fairly bright light coming in through our double-pane windows.

We will be having a major Artic Blast for the next few days. Temperatures are dropping rapidly, and we may see below zero temps for the next 5 or 6 days. This next week may be the coldest in years....Where is Global Warming????

I don't expect to be going out in the coming blizzard and bitter cold that will follow. So I went out and slapped on the windshield cover sheet, which has some good magnets and two flaps you slam inside the front doors to anchor everything. I have a full car cover of high quality but I almost never go that far.

May as well have the car fairly "ready to go" in case I need it for some reason.

I need to get the kids to come for the motorcycles, canoes, pickup topper, boxed crap, etc. that uses up too much garage space. :ROFLMAO:

It's noon and still -32C and with just a light wind it feels like -44C. The sun is shining at the moment but we will get some light snow later this evening and tomorrow, probably not more then 2-3 cm. We have extremely cold temperatures but not much snow, which is not good. This "deep freeze" should last until Monday night and then get a bit warmer. We have "extreme cold warnings" because with these temperatures and even light wind the skin can freeze in a few minutes!

The snow started coming down a couple hours ago. Winds are 20-30 mph. They are calling for up to 14" of snow by the end of Sat. Temps are going down to single digits for several days also. Tomorrow will not be fun clearing snow... We have been lucky so far this year. I only started the snowblower once so far.

Edit: 7 pm. I just cleared the first 4" of new snow. That will be less my snowblower will need to move when I wake up tomorrow.

Went for my morning walk bundled up like my avatar <<

.. it's very cold for Houston this weekend, but the sun is shining brightly.

I took this photo at about 7 AM from my deck-
And now the sun is out and it is melting and the local diary farmer is cleaning out my driveway with his Kubota-there was more snow than I thought out there.
