82 Year Old Fights Off House Intruder With Hammer

In England The old man would have been charched with assault and battery.
The Criminal would have been awarded a hand out for the stress he went through while being assaulted.

That is a total exaggeration!

In the UK you are only permitted to use enough force to protect yourself, no more, thank goodness. I am glad firearms for personal protection are illegal.

It's ok Justme, LO is another that likes to run down Britain and British law.

I am so thankful I live in the UK where you have to have a licence to own a shotgun or rifle for sporting purposes, and handguns, or any other sort of firearm, are illegal. It is great our police are not routinely armed either. If the police marksmen do have to shoot someone, there is an enquiry and they are in the deep proverbial if they shot the person without due cause.

This is what I like to see in the news. I mean, I guess that sounds pretty rad but little kids and the elderly getting picked on, and animals, is just not acceptablegrandma-with-shotgun.jpg

I'm not sure what you mean by horrible? Because it stands for an elderly person defending herself against an attack on her person, or because it's blurry?

I don't know the statistics on your crime-rates, but one thing I know about the US is that the "bad guys" always have guns, or can get them, legal or not. I think living anywhere the crime-rate is lower for whatever reason would be wonderful. You are very fortunate.

It's not a question of running down the UK or the law. The one's squealing the most will be the ones who have never had an intruder coming through their door. Anyone ever personally experienced it then? I talked to people who had when I worked alongside the police and prison service back in the nineties.

I agree, it would be a different ball-game if someone we loved or knew had been attacked, maybe killed. It's "put yourself in their shoes" again I think.

Exactly.

It's been said that a Conservative is just a Liberal with experience ...

I just simply do not like when the odds are in the favor of the criminal. People, especially the most vulnerable, should be able to defend themselves when attacked.

Didn't really understand my dad's PTSD until I came home. Old habits die hard . . . and sometimes shouldn't...

I've done that almost every night of my life - I can't sleep until the doors are locked, the windows latched and the timber wolves fed.

Had a buddy in the photo lab who drew guard duty at an ammo dump one night. He said the lights were all pointed at him instead of into the jungle where he could hear Chuck sneakin' around. SO, he turned the damned things off . . . Got into big trouble but he didn't care. Makes sense to me.

OH, I have all the double glazed windows locked and everything else that goes along with home security. Better then a sleeping pill.

I don't live in a bad spot at all, very fortunate, but in this day and age, I suppose it would be smart to lock things up.

Example Of British law.
A yob puts a house brick through a business mans window.
The Business man puts up a sign.Saying how and why it was broken by a known criminal and drug addict.
The criminal says he is traumatized by his remarks.
The Police interview the Businesses man who gets a caution and a criminal record.
The yob gets off scott free.
Another victory for the apologists.

Oh don't kid yourself, they can strike in any type of area. They especially will often target affluent neighborhoods as well as the poorer ones.

Knew a very, very nice woman (ok, I had a crush on her . . . ) who had a lowlife brother in prison because he had a habit of walking down the street trying for unlocked doors.

there are plenty of times I don't use my head:(. About 3 miles from here is one of the "wildest" parts of town for drugs etc. In fact, I think it was about 3 months ago there was a drug-relating shooting death. We've got a neighborhood watch (nosey neighbors which I am grateful for).

The problem is that crime and drugs are in all areas. Neighborhood watches are helpful, I set one up here in my neighborhood, but you still need to be aware of how to keep your home safe and of course how to avoid some common pitfalls while out and about.
