I actually have several hundred of these that I've planted (divided & spread) over the last 25 years.
@chic: I don’t think they are thistles. They were tiny and had non-bristle leaves. They were just ‘purdy’Thistles? There is a border hedge full of thistles in my neighborhood. They don't bloom until July. They're supposed to keep all of us neighbors protected from robbery so everyone takes good care of them.![]()

I got the first ones from my Dad. It was one of his favorites, and mine, too. When I looked them up, I found that they were called "Easter Parade gladiolus".
Sadly I haven't had any flowers to take photos of ..
I think a type of Amaryllis... yet. Your day is coming. But here we are well into the late winter garden wake up. I suspect your season starts at the end of your winter too, after the rains begin?
I forget what it is called but this is in bloom now.

It grows in a pot that sits on a faux mantle at the back of the little garden off the gazebo deck.
