Are we in this forum for the "likes" etc., or for discussions! Or both?

I think it is possible to like an opposing viewpoint. I enjoy debate. I am still learning. As long as someone is not unkind I appreciate everyone's post. That is what makes this whole thing interesting to me.

If I give a like on an opposing view, it means I respect your opinion. I'm trying not to dole out too many likes but I use it as a "read" option. If I really oppose your view or post I'll let you know.
But there's such a difference between liking a post or respecting what a poster wrote. I can never "like" a post, no matter how well reasoned, if it contradicts everything I know and believe! Yes, along with you @hearlady I can respect it, so now we have another needed emoji for "respect!":)

I am sooo with you, @DebraMae! Maybe we would be better off without the likes and hugs and loves and just have great debates without a boost to the ego! If we like something we could do so in a reply, if we don't agree, but respect another's view, we could make an argument for our side instead and still give him/her credit for a fine explanation of his/her side. Just a thought!

I don't get involved in the heavy topics that people get angry about. I stay away from those. I admit to "liking" a post because I like the person writing or commenting on it. I feel like if I like something one person said I don't want the others to feel bad so I like their post too. There are many things commented that I don't agree with but its no big deal. It is a forum for fun and talking to others around the world. I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings so I like their posts or comments.

Old Salt… ever heard of the children’s game “Follow the Leader?” It goes like this:

Players first choose a leader or "head of the line" and the remaining players (the followers) all line up behind the leader. The leader then moves around and all the players have to mimic the leader's actions.

Same thing with emojis… only it’s the adult version of the game.

Have a nice day everyone!!

Wait, what? There's a like button?

They don't eat much and hold no real relevance, why worry about them?

I'm hugging every post from here forward, because I don't agree with non-hugging emojis behaviour on posts.

Give me a hug or like if you agree, I'm bringing them to the bank in the morning.

I am on 2 forums that doesn't have reaction icons. I like that because you reply to a message to convey your reaction. It encourages one to collect thoughts and feelings about the issue.

That is happening here also. The reaction icons here are part of the culture we are creating in this cyber world. For me it is fascinating to mix ideas with the limited response icons and notifications.

@katlupe Your thoughts are not my thoughts, but I sure love what you just wrote! You are a kind soul!

I was truly tempted to click 'Like' on your post, I truly was. However, upon reflection and considering the reasoning within your post, I thought better of it. Instead, I'll just say that I agree with your post above. So how do you feel about that?

I apologize Old Salt - it was my weak attempt to be funny.
No need to apologize, Gardenlover, since I couldn't figure it out! It could have been referring to some post I had overlooked? You cost me fifteen minutes of my precious time looking for a post that would fit your comment! It was simply too enigmatic for me!

I don't have a side. I have my own opinions rather than some sort of collective position of every topic.

There is such a thing as an independent thinker. There are many here on this forum.

I am just afraid that the present set-up makes us into a group of browsers and clickers. Going down a list: like ... like ... like! Did I get everyone? I really was flattered and pleased every time I got a "like" to one of my posts until I noticed that some of our friends, seem to go down the length of the thread and sprinkle every post with a "like!" Their intentions are kind and I appreciate that part but this devalues everyone's post unless the purpose of this forum is to make everyone feel good. Nothing wrong with that, but I crave more sharing of ideas rather than clicks! Am I the only one?

Shhh! I "love" your reply! :)

I like this reply of yours, to my reply to your post #29.

Alternatively, we could all just hit the "Like" button. I think the Like button still has some merit, as when used correctly and appropriately it reduces unnecessary replies that some might become bored with trying to read through.

Can you see the point I've been trying to set up with you?
