Are you streaming ( or binge watching ) any series on Netflix, or any other service? Tell us about it.

We watch "Endeavor" once in awhile. More often it's "Lewis", or "Inspector Lewis". Good stories and good camaraderie between the two detectives. Sometimes though I get lost in the story line. The Brits have always been the best at murder mysteries, but often they're so complex that I get confused.

But it's a pleasure to not have gutter language and graphic sex as part of the productions. AND the whole action is not portrayed on iPhones-- like some of the more contemporary shows!
We've enjoyed both of those linked series very much. I believe we only saw a scattered few of the original in the sequence, "Inspector Morse".

The Triangle (2005). Three parts two hours each. Bermuda Triangle investigation (fictional drama). High production values for a TV miniseries, good writing and acting. Quality second-tier actors (Sam Neil, Eric Stoltz, Lou Diamond Philips, et al.).

The Roku Channel

Dark Winds came to Netflix recently and I have been watching it.
I found this on Prime, not Netflix. Did you have to pay for it? Sometimes carriers and fees are different in Canada.

Binge watching two series on Netflix. Thanks to the rate increase that starts next once I will be dropping Netflix very soon, so I want to finish these shows.

I will only subscribe to one streaming service at a time. The idea of paying nearly $50 a month for TV shows just does not sit well with me. Between one streaming service and free over the air TV, I have many hours a week of viewing available. Too much really.

I just started watching The Good Wife (1 episode). I mainly wanted to see it because I've become a fan of Archie Panjabi. Since it looks like I won't be able to see her in the 3rd season of Departure, I decided to check her out on that show. I know the Good Wife was highly acclaimed but I'm still not sure if I'll be sticking with it or not.

'The Middle' is almost over. I'll be sad. They've been my family since 'Heartland'.
I just watched a nice interview with Patricia Heaton. She's had a satisfying career.

I'm curious how you got a Netflix plan for only $12 a month???
Are there commercials? Thx
There weren't but I think this month they are changing the plans. I received a notice that I can keep the plan I have and pay less because they are adding commercials or chose another plan.

What you need to know:
Your Basic plan is being discontinued, and your new $6.99 Standard with ads plan automatically begins on your next billing date, September 30.
Your new plan includes:
•
Lower price: Save 40% each month.
•
Better video quality: Stream in Full HD (1080p).
•
More devices: Watch and download on 2 household devices at the same time.
•
A few short ads: Designed to not interrupt you during a scene — and no ads on Kids profiles.

Thank you!
I may have to give them a call...

I was restless yesterday so I started a couple series.

One was Shades of Blue with Jennifer Lopez on Roku.

The other was Reasonable Doubt on Hulu.

Both had really strong women characters. I didn't plan it that way. It was just random. I'm not sure if I'll go back to them but they're on my continue watching list now.

I had started watching a silly kid's show called Kiwi and Strit. It's a bonus borrow from Hoopla. For the last 7 days of the month, Hoopla puts out a list of shows that can be borrowed without a credit from the library. I have fun with those at the end of the month.

Ripley (2024) is hands down the best neo-noir series I've ever seen. Andrew Scott is the lead character, with associate roles for Dakota Fanning and Johnny Flynn. There is also a stand out performance by Maurizio Lombardi as a police inspector. Scott previously played Prof. Moriarty in the Sherlock series with Benedict Cumberbach and Martin Freeman. Scott can present as “creepy” very well, and his performance is a tour de force.

A petty con man, Tom Ripley, is hired by a wealthy man to convince his son to return home after he fled to Italy awhile back to paint and write. Ripley, impressed by the man’s generous remuneration, accepts the job and travels to Italy. He locates the son and the son’s mistress. Their interaction and what plays out is the basis of the story.
Written/directed by Steven Zaillian, based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, the story, direction, and acting are all remarkable. But what stands out beneath the captivating tale is the exceptional chiaroscuro cinematography by Robert Elswit (There Will Be Blood). Every single scene is framed as a museum qulitly photograph. The movie is in glorious black & white, so Elswit's cinematography completely underpins the story and mood. And the mood is a dark cat and mouse game, with plenty of Hitchcockian set ups, along with a few rare bits of black comedy.

Highsmith’s novel has been filmed several times before. John Malkovich starred in Highsmith’s Ripley’s Game (2002), and he has several cameo appearances here.

Doc’s rating: 10/10

I am going to see how the commercials work out and if they are irritating I think the other plan was a just a few dollars more than what I have been paying.
I have not found the ads intrusive. I think at the most I have noticed three commercials per hour, and they are the quick ones. So I do not consider it a downside. The only downside for me is that the shows on the plan are in HD format and not 4k but I do not consider that a dealbreaker either since many of the shows are not available in 4k anyway.

Currently I am watching Glitch on Netflix. I avoided it for the longest time because when I read the description of the show, I thought it was a zombie type show and I am burned out on zombies. But it isn't about zombies at all. I got through the first season (only 6 episodes) and it held my attention and am starting the second season this weekend.

Just finished season 1 of The Capture on NF. It’s a British crime series based on their CCTV cameras. Well done with lots of twists and turns.

Edited to correct. This was on Amazon Prime.

On the last day of the month (today), my library credits on my online library services expire. I often try to borrow shows so my credits don't go to waste.

This month I got The Butterfly Effect, The Golden Compass, Love, Rosie and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, episode 1, and a week pass from the Hallmark Channel from Hoopla.

From Kanopy, I got Shakepeare and Hathaway, season 1, The Split season 1 (BBC show about a divorce lawyer), Ava (about a woman hired assassin), Simply Ming season 1 (Ming Tsai's cooking show), Maisie Raine season 1 (woman police officer on BBC), Quirke season 1 (coroner on BBC).

It remains to be seen how much of this I can watch. The Hoopla stuff expires in 2 days. Most of the Kanopy stuff lasts for 7 or 14 days.

If you didn’t catch it when it was on AMC in 2018, The Terror is a series based on Dan Simmons‘ book by the same name that may now be seen on Netflix. The series may be considered a historical fantasy as it was based on a true event, the ill-fated Franklin Expedition in search of the Northwest Passage in 1845. Two British ships, the Terror and Erebus, become trapped in the ice, and survival horror ensues involving tainted food, an extreme environment, encroaching madness, and a mythological monster. The series is well-acted with a good period flavor, although there is gore, dismemberments, decapitation, and even some cannibalism portrayed…
