When you have Bolton (A NSA) & and a general who states "We were not aware" That sounds like they weren't. If learned from other intelligence sources, then why didn't they ring the alarm then?

For everyone else, I don't have a tv, nor subscribe to any news service. CNN's past lies are well known

That's a shame, for you might be more up to date and better informed.
To each his own......you keep doing your own thing, and I will continue my knowledgeable journey.
Best of luck to you. Sincerely.

I think Warner Brothers owns CNN. Not that it matters, but WB made a lot of cartoon movies. Just kidding. I remember back when CNN was the place to go to get the news, but then it kind of lost its way. Who was the black man that was their first full time newscaster? Wasn’t it Bernie someone? I remember when he got caught over in Kuwait, not sure, but that’s when Operation Desert Storm started and he was telling his listeners that the night we attacked, he was really scared listening to the bombing that he said he hid under his bed.

Ah yes, back when news was news and not 85% political bias spin. (Talking about all outlets here, not any in particular... they all do it.) His name was Bernard Shaw... he died (as a side note) just 4 or 5 months ago.

I heard on tv this week that several balloons were spotted over our country during the Trump years. Wonder why we just heard of them this week.
Something I heard, or perhaps read, said that the military didn't inform the White House.
I have no idea whether this is a factual statement or not.

Another reason could be that they were extremely high (stratosphere?) and the various eyes looking for threats were not looking for anything that high up. If you don't look, you don't see. However, I have also seen reports of three balloons over US so they must have been detected at some stage.

Wait 25 years or so and the secrets may be revealed.

Balloon was part of wider Chinese snooping effort, Pentagon says
Story by By Connor O’Brien • Yesterday 2:38 PM

From Brig. General Pat Ryder from the Pentagon
A Chinese spy balloon that was shot down last week and several others that crossed into U.S. territory were part of a broader surveillance effort by Beijing, the Pentagon's top spokesperson said Wednesday.
The surveillance balloon program has been operating "for several years," Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder told reporters at the Pentagon.

Though he wouldn't address intelligence underpinning U.S. assessments of the balloons, Ryder said the U.S. is aware of four previous balloons that have crossed into U.S. airspace — three during the Trump administration and one early in President Joe Biden's term.

"We are aware that there have been four previous balloons that have gone over U.S. territory. This is what we assess is part of a larger Chinese surveillance balloon program," Ryder said. "You've heard us talk in the past about the fact that this is a program that's been operated for several years."

Last week, the military tracked a balloon that crossed the U.S. before it was shot down off the coast of the Carolinas on Saturday. The military is still working to recover debris from the airship.

Outrage over Beijing's encroachment last week was further fueled by revelations of several more Chinese balloons that crossed into U.S. territory but went undetected. Ryder said the military has since "learned a lot on how to track" the balloons.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who postponed a visit to Beijing over the balloon, echoed the assessment that China's surveillance was widespread. He said the U.S. has "shared information with dozens of countries."

This one's being called an Object, not a Balloon. Spotted over Alaska, shot down shortly afterward.

I didn’t read all the posts, so this may be a repeat from someone else’s post.

It’s a good thing we shot down the Chinese balloon. The bad part is that we allowed it to crossover so much of the country, especially our missile sites. It’s well known that the Chinese could have seen our missile sites from their satellites in the sky. However, with using the balloon at a much lower altitude, they would be able to detect and get a better view of the launch facility.

I used to think it was weird that the U.S. was very secretive about their launch facilities, yet today, most anyone can find a lot of specifics about our launch facilities online. I have even seen pictures of the underground launch facility used by NORAD here online. A lot of what used to be secretive is now not so secretive.

I think the big powers in this world know we all have nuclear weapons and even the locations of these facilities, so why hide it? By the time our enemies launch their weapons, we would only be seconds behind. BTW, we (the U.S.) still have some secret launch facilities that only a very few people know about. Of course, the SS, the President and a few people in the National Intelligence community would have knowledge of the location of the silos. You need to have the highest classification of clearances to have this knowledge. I’m not sure if the Joint Chiefs of Staff would have this intelligence. Maybe only the Chairman would have that information.

But according to the US Navy and NORAD, we gathered intelligence from the balloon while it gathered intelligence as it traversed the country, and that this was a good thing.

China already had a pretty good picture of where our nukes and stuff are, just as we know where theirs are, so this wasn't a major concern. And since they already know all that, the real concern was what else the balloon might be up to, and why. So our military and intelligence people decided to just monitored the thing for a while.

Breaking News... That Chinese Spy Balloon

Oh, been meaning to ask: How do we know that the Chinese launched this/these balloons? Last I heard they weren't answering the phone when the Pentagon tried to call them to confirm.
Is there a visible "made in China" label on it? A lot of stuff has that label nowadays. 😅
