Death row inmate denied request to have clergy lay hand upon him when being executed

I am not a supporter of the death penalty but I find this request outrageous.

What purpose does clergy (single of plural) serve the condemned man WHILE HE IS BEING EXECUTED?

If it is absolution he is seeking, that can be granted anytime before the moment of execution. If it is comfort let him clutch a teddy bear.

Sorry if I sound very harsh but anyone on death row has had ample time to prepare for their last day. Methinks many of their victims would not had that luxury.

He is wishing to be absolved of his sins by a "Laying on of hands" at the moment of death, a ritual found in the Bible.

As I indicated, that is traditionally done before the condemned is taken to the gallows.
The last meal has been eaten.

Just before execution the condemned is usually allowed a few last words.
To me this just sounds like a circus with the condemned as the ring master.

By the way I am aware of laying on of hands but don't remember it being done at the moment of death. Can you offer a verse?

This is the District Court's opinion, however the U.S. Supreme Court granted a Stay on Sep. 8th. Should/does he have a right to have his request granted (non legal opinions, just personal belief) I say yes.

Humanity, kindness and compassion should be granted even to the worst of criminals.
It doesn't say who they are or if they deserve it or not.
It says who we are!

I don't care one way or the other. The form of execution wasn't mentioned so if it is by electric chair I could understand the state not wanting hands on during execution.

There was no mention as to whether or not the clergy chosen was OK with the request.

I so agree!

Really amusing how such dirt bags who show no compassion ask for compassion for themselves.
Susan Atkins (who stabbed a 9-months pregnant Sharon Tate 16 times after hanging her from a ceiling rafter) asked for "Compassionate Release" when she was terminally ill.

I would feel better if a guilty person (with two eye witnesses) once found guilty was taken from the courtroom and hung immediately.
The cases that drag on for seven-fifteen years. more often than not, result in death verdict being changed to life in prison.

My state has the awesome authority to kill me.
I find that unsettling.
Their are a lot of people on death role that are innocent-that is unsettling.
Our court system is unsettling.
The antics of our police are unsettling.

The topic is unsettling, the people involved are unsettling; the people executed will never be a danger to the 'rest of us good people.'
Execution is not a deterrent, never has been, that is unsettling.

You kill one of mine, i want you dead.
You kill someone I don't know-Maybe, you should be executed, not sure.

I am unsure, that is unsettling..

Goggle says Oklahoma, Mississippi and Utah still have choices of firing squad or injection.
The novel and TV Movie of Gary Gilmore's execution educated us.
'Take him out and shoot him.' had a finality to it.
Perhaps, killing the person as soon as he is found guilty would be more appropriate.

Enough Innocent people have been found not guilty after years on Death Row.

Reading a bit more about this situation I now think that this is just a strategy to secure a stay of execution. The religion issue is vey likely just a smokescreen. I don't think it is going to work.

I wonder which John Marimez would rather have- a long drawn out stay of execution, while this suit slowly winds through the court system , or does he really want "the laying of hands" as he dies, now. I don't see any reason why he can't get all the spiritual comforting he desires before execution. Maybe he'd like to have a his buddies from his cell block for 'religious comfort" some chicken, drinks all around, a band, barbeque a few steaks, a few beers, a female escort, a cake, a trip to Disney World, watch a couple of flicks-ALL of which could be argued as his "religious right". This would be setting a legal precedent for anything a death row inmate wants to call his "religious right", as he's being executed.

However, those people who are found not guilty later were not just randomly charged; they have records for having committed other crimes they haven't been convicted of, & those crimes are deserving of the death penalty.

This thread isn't about the death penalty. But I have no qualms about using it. Like win231, I want to be undeniably super sure the guy did it. I think if the prosecution wants to go for the death penalty, no "human" evidence can be used. That would mean only proven forensic evidence could be admitted- no confessions, no eye witnesses.

That's right. And there is also the cost issue. The four 30-30 cartridges they use only cost $16.00. Much more cost effective than all those lethal injection drugs. And cleanup is simple; a bucket is placed under the chair to catch the...........flow.
