Do you think what other nations think about us matters?

Not one iota. Most of the time they just see the US as a giant ATM machine.

Australia isn't big but we always align with US.

We used to align with UK but when they proved unable/unwilling to come to our aid we realigned towards US.
Realignment in the future is unlikely but not out of the question.

We do give it plenty of thought but if by doing our own stuff you mean considering our national interest in terms of trade and regional security, then perhaps we should do a bit more of our own stuff.

‘Us’ being the USA?

We are hated
Hell, I even hate us

However

It’s a world economy

We’re spending other country’s confidence in what the dollar once was

So, for now, they still hate us
But
We are still part of what makes the world go ‘round

For the present

On a neighborly note; we brag more about what we’ve done for the third world than we’ve ever actually done

This is just my opinion, but influenced by business and personal travels

I've been the lone stranger enough to know when I'm hated
There's a look, a trait, a 'tell'... that betrays any smile

and yes

it'll one day matter

It matters with countries like North Korea who have the (limited) means to make life miserable by lighting up our West Coast.

It matters when we go to war.

It matters for economic reasons.

Unfortunately, we make poor world citizens.

I think the days of "fortress America" is over. It's no longer profitable to limit your products to just the US. If you want a really profitable businesses, you are going to design products that will sell in Peoria, as well as in Milan, and Tokyo. For that kind of international trade and subsequent profitability, we need a good American image.

It absolutely matters. It would be short sighted and foolish to think otherwise. This is the 21st century. No one can survive with an isolationist policy anymore.

During WW2 many other countries needed us and they loved us. Now the younger generations have failed to learn from the past. So, do I care what they think about us? Not one bit.

I think the way each nation is portrayed is in the leaders and movers and shakers of that country. It is not a reflection on the people that live there.

Speaking as a Canadian I see the people of the USA as being some of the most patriotic people in the world, it shows in your faces when your national anthem is played.

In some respects I think other countries worry about countries because many people are sheeple. They want and/or expect to be lead and simply looking for what direction to go or who to follow. Some people worry more about international peer pressure than domestic. Some like what other countries are doing more than their own. Some people like words associated with bigger, larger which is why many like to think in terms of international events and politics rather than just domestic.

A trick question right?

It depends on the countries and what is going on in the world at any given time. Trade imbalance, foreign aid, disaster assistance, mutual defense, technology sharing, and so many more pieces to being "liked".

I'm trying to imagine what kind of "likes" America would get if instead of no cost foreign aid that aid was based on a loan. Or if no aid was given at all and all countries had to fend for themselves for defense and health care costs. Even something not often thought about America's military bases spread around the world. Close them and bring the money spent in those countries to bases built and maintained throughout America. How many "likes" would go away when that land lease, food suppliers, local people employed and comfort of knowing America was there to defend at a moments notice?

Depends on which countries and why. The USA is never going to be able to please everyone... heck you are never going to be able to please every American. I don't think selling out America or Americans to "look good" in other countries eye's is the way to go and we have had way too much of that... that is the real issue/question.
