Early morning question about influencers?

Do you watch any influencers? Why are you interested in them? Do you gain/learn anything of value?What exactly is an influencer? Do these people actually make a living peddling their opinions or am I misunderstanding influencers?

We're basically from the same generation and grew up without the internet so our career choices were becoming a doctor, nurse, lawyer, teacher, homemaker. Becoming an influencer was not an option. The only people who could be called influencers back then were movie stars and some rock musicians. :unsure:

I pay absolutely no attention to influencers. The reason is that I know whatever it is they're pushing online, they're being paid to do it and endorse the product... so that makes it basically useless if I want a true and unbiased (and uncompensated!) opinion.
 

I agree. I am not sure what an influencer is as well. But I think it’s like the popular girl/boy in high school who graduated to yapping on U tube and became popular for their opinions. Then their opinions were agreed upon by others who lack lives and opinions of their own.

Then when they reached a certain level of popularity, and got followers (sheep), they were called influential, and became influencers.
 
For all our actions there is an equal an opposite reaction. :) We are all influencers, we have to be, to get things done. Let's take Alex Jones...he got smashed by pedaling his lies about Sandy Hook, he is an influencer that tells a lot of controversial info. All the way to good little PBS kiddy shows. They are all influencers. But @CallMeKate has convinced me to not watch anyone or interact with anything in am influenced by. :) ( joke?) ( influenced me )= (influencer ) :)

:ROFLMAO: Well now that's a tad extreme! 🤭 Just don't buy a cr@ppy product being pushed by an "influencer" because "today's video is sponsored by...." Because they'll always say it's the best thing since sliced bread if there's cash or free products involved.
 
They [influencers] would not even exist if it weren't for those that are influenced by them. Who IMO are a bunch of non thinking weak minded individuals in the first place. These people are so void of the ability to think for themselves , that truly do need someone to lead them around by the nose.

And I'll add that ...... from what I see, it is only going to get worse.
 
Rarely.

I get drawn into a video on Facebook or YouTube every now and then by the content.

Odd things like folding clothes, minimalist apartments, dollar store meals, learning to use walkers, manage stairs, etc…

I learn a few things and sometimes binge watch several videos but I rarely remember the creators.
 
Influencer is a fashionable new word that lacks a precise definition. It does carrying an emotional tone in that it sounds like someone who wants you to think his way, thereby stripping you of your free will. Since it lacks precision, it has bothered me. Should it include people who bribe officials to violate their oaths? It's like there are these people hiding in the bushes, mailboxes, and in the shadows, who are up to no good.

Maybe technically Martha is/was an "influencer"... but I've thought of people like her as more of a teacher... showing us how to do things better or differently. I think of influencers as YouTube/Instagram, etc. people who have channels where sponsors send them free things or even pay them to promote the product. Not very different from sports personalities peddling certain brands and being paid big bucks to do so whether or not they ever actually used the product.

With the advent of YouTube and other communication venues, anybody can become a very significant influencer in any specific chosen subject albeit with varying decrees of success. Perhaps we should differentiate between professional and non professional influencers. Professional being those who make a living from influencing. Non-professional being those who don't.

I'd seen a video about a 21 year old female influencer getting plastic surgery. It said she'd been an "influencer" since the age of 11. An 11 year old knows nothing. Who would follow such a person? Clueless 9 + 10 year olds? She was flawlessly beautiful but otherwise empty.

This is why I asked about influencers. I guess you make yourself beautiful and say, here I am. I'm an influencer! It's comical really.
 
There is far more "influencing" going on than people are aware of until they are willing to look at things objectively. This is most obvious in network "news" but the indoctrination extends into mass media, and yes, even those "PBS kiddy shows" which are based directly on techniques applied in schools under the Third Reich.

However I suspect the question here is about small-scale operations. Ones that began as an individual up until they were selected and groomed through sponsorships and put in touch with "resources" to assist in video editing, better equipment, tickling YouTube's recommendation algorithm, maze of censorship, etc.

Many who buck the corporate government line have reduced their YouTube footprint to abridged "teasers" that can safely navigate the censorship. These serve as gateways to their real presence on less bombastically controlled outlets such as Rumble.

Odd? I always stop and watch these and I’ve never used any of their knowledge. I have no idea who they even are.
