FB Spyied On Americans

I've never even figured out how FB works. I always get confused, and don't care enough to pursue the matter.

What does bother me is that my family uses it a lot, and I seem to turn up in it, whether I want to or not. Such as being "tagged" in family pictures. There's no privacy in this world any more.

About the FBI or anyone else being informed about a computer platform being used to spread plots for violence, I don't see what's wrong with that.

I use it to keep current on the latest news from my large extended family and a few friends, and to play Solitaire of course. Some of the other items that show up on my feed are worth perusing for a few minutes per day.

Facebook spied on private messages of Americans who questioned 2020 election

Facebook has been spying on the private messages and data of American users and reporting them to the FBI if they express anti-government or anti-authority sentiments — or question the 2020 election — according to sources within the Department of Justice.

Notice that the articles linked are in the opinion section, which is where the propaganda peddlers ply their reality warping trade.

Facebook does harvest user's personal browsing habits, just like every other social media platform, but "Facebook reporting Americans to the FBI who questioned the 2020 election" is simply one of many counter-intelligence " lies that the liars are circulating.

Of course the FBI spies on Americans. Americans are a bigger terrorist threat to our country than the Iran or Russia. As for facebook, they probably know more about their users than the FBI, CIA, or IRS, but most of their collected data serves their interests first, and what they feed the government is filtered according to what serves facebook.

I'd worry more about facebook than the FBI.

If they were spying on me, they’d fall asleep from boredom. For me, Just family news and pictures, and there is lots of useful info about things like public library, SR centers, other community programs. Even international programs. Useful info.
I don’t get into political or private arguments, or rumor mongering. I try to block them if I can.
It can become a garbage pit if people let it.

This doesn't surprise me. I use facebook all the time because it's great for business. And I keep in immediate touch with family faraway. But it's true there is absolutely NO PRIVACY anywhere online. If I have something secret to share I now do it in private with the person I need to tell. That's it. No technology of any kind involved.

Well , this story is "according to sources in the FBI". That could be a couple of guys, who sweep up at night? It's not the FBI, but NSA which is charged with monitoring electronic traffic. The National Security Agency has massive computers/servers/etc., which supposedly monitors worldwide electronic traffic. If you're plotting to violently overthrow the government of the US, I think that gives the NSA justification to monitor your electronic messages, whether or not you are an election denier.

I agree and am regretting that I started this thread.

One of the things that I have learned on SF is that none of us owns any particular thread, even if you started it! People are free to express whatever thoughts they have on the topic, even when those thoughts veer off into territory that might have very little to do with the original post or are not to the liking of the person who started the thread. I agree with @JustDave that it is an interesting thread. If you don't like the thread any more, then just don't read it.

Bottom line, exactly what, or if, was reported, and to whom, is uncertain, but it is an interesting issue. IMHO First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech are central to the purpose and meaning of the Constitution. Unfortunately, current discussion aside, there are some who would no doubt disagree.

Since when did the FBI not spy on Americans? Hoover's FBI was notorious with COINTELPRO, which was exposed in the 70s. Then the passage of the "Patriot" Act turned the henhouse over to the foxes.

Does anyone know how I can get rid of this topic?

“The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.”
― Omar Khayyám

So it is with the internet. Don't be embarrassed, we've all made the same error until we learned to always doublecheck inflammatory statements we happen to read online..

I've never been on Facebook. Originally my reasoning was that I spend way too much time on my computer as it is. Then after one of my sisters kept telling me of stories and facts that she read on Facebook, which I thought were totally stupid, it convinced me never to join Facebook. It seemed like it would be reading The National Enquirer.
