A new one for me.

Schools in France are to replace the words ‘mother’ and ‘father’ with ‘Parent 1’ and ‘Parent 2’ on official documents.

The move is part of an amendment to a new draft education bill, which supporters say seeks to put an end to discrimination against same-sex parents.

But critics argue it “dehumanises” parenthood and could lead to rows over who should be referred to as “parent 1".

So, who should be Parent No. 1?

Just another stupid thing. And, there goes that word "discrimination", AGAIN.

I don't think the change is wise. How did they handle it on the American TV show "Modern Family" where the little girl has 2 dad's? How about Dad and Spouse Dad? I don't like 1 and 2. Maybe they figure it'll work if this is only on documents and not what the 2 parents are actually called? Dad and Daddy-Oh, Mother and Mom.....it could all get so confusing.

sounds like a dr who title --- or come in number 3 your time is up etc ----trust the French 'how bad to give people number title ?
idiotic yes for sure '' nothing wrong in MUM /DAD / MOTHER /FATHER / JEEEZ wht next !!!!

I can see why same-sex parents would find "mother" and "father" designations offensive. The gender lines blur or disappear altogether when you have two adults of the same sex raising a child or children together.

But designations of Parent 1 and Parent 2 are hierarchal, and that could be offensive as well, whereas the standard "mother" and "father" offer a simple gender designation with no specific hierarchy,

CeeCee, I think it's more about the legal designations than what the kids of same sex couples call their parents. What to call them is entirely a personal choice, but legal issues, like who is listed on the birth certificate and in what capacity, or official ones for various forms etc., can get really tricky.

Ok, thanks for the clarification....obvious I didn’t read the link...Busted, lol.

This idea sounds too dumb to ever catch on in real life. Maybe they will be Parent 1 and Parent 2 on legal documents, but can you imagine a kid actually referring to them in that way? (Would be a good SNL skit.)
