Obviously our lives shape us. Violence didn't used to shock me that much. "Raging Bull" is one of my all time favorite movies. Ditto the Godfather trilogy, "Goodfella's was a bit rough there but still worth watching again. But yeah I've changed. I mean with OINB there were some nasty moments involving guns, Vee going squish, stabbing, beating, the gentleman who gets cooked, oh and we won't mention liver.
But those scenes were quick, very brief, and part of character development. Something I found disturbing the other day was an article in one of the men's magazines. They were talking about two fighters who recently were defeated after being champions. I guess that kind of brawling isn't like boxing. I mean boxing has rules and things that can't be done. The fighter's name is McGregor.
He was fighting someone in a slightly higher weight class and he got creamed. His opponent was tireless and wouldn't go down no matter how much blood flew. Rhonda Roussey was the other fighter. In the pictures she was pulled into a headlock. The young woman fighting her looks almost giddy that she won and almost killed someone. I mean the mouth guards distort things, but she looks like she's laughing...that is so sick.
Another thought was an Anthony Bourdain book I just donated called " A Chef's Tour". I mean "Kitchen Confidential" was a really fun read. But this one he sold out. After years of mocking Emeril he created his own BAM. Basically he's traveling the world in search of authentic cuisine. But in several chapters he describes in ghoulish detail creatures being executed, ripped apart and then turned into a fine dining experience.
Unless you are a hunter or farmer you understand how cringe worthy that is. Hearing a pig scream as it's being stabbed and then...mmmmmm, get the napkins and barbeque sauce ready, were eating good tonight! I would become vegan instantly. I donated the book, I just couldn't bear to read any more. I used to like Andrew Zimmer too. But no I don't find that stuff interesting any more.
