Have Your Values Changed as You've Gotten Older?

Obviously our lives shape us. Violence didn't used to shock me that much. "Raging Bull" is one of my all time favorite movies. Ditto the Godfather trilogy, "Goodfella's was a bit rough there but still worth watching again. But yeah I've changed. I mean with OINB there were some nasty moments involving guns, Vee going squish, stabbing, beating, the gentleman who gets cooked, oh and we won't mention liver.

But those scenes were quick, very brief, and part of character development. Something I found disturbing the other day was an article in one of the men's magazines. They were talking about two fighters who recently were defeated after being champions. I guess that kind of brawling isn't like boxing. I mean boxing has rules and things that can't be done. The fighter's name is McGregor.

He was fighting someone in a slightly higher weight class and he got creamed. His opponent was tireless and wouldn't go down no matter how much blood flew. Rhonda Roussey was the other fighter. In the pictures she was pulled into a headlock. The young woman fighting her looks almost giddy that she won and almost killed someone. I mean the mouth guards distort things, but she looks like she's laughing...that is so sick.

Another thought was an Anthony Bourdain book I just donated called " A Chef's Tour". I mean "Kitchen Confidential" was a really fun read. But this one he sold out. After years of mocking Emeril he created his own BAM. Basically he's traveling the world in search of authentic cuisine. But in several chapters he describes in ghoulish detail creatures being executed, ripped apart and then turned into a fine dining experience.

Unless you are a hunter or farmer you understand how cringe worthy that is. Hearing a pig scream as it's being stabbed and then...mmmmmm, get the napkins and barbeque sauce ready, were eating good tonight! I would become vegan instantly. I donated the book, I just couldn't bear to read any more. I used to like Andrew Zimmer too. But no I don't find that stuff interesting any more.

I can't tolerate the filthy language and sex in movies and in books the way I use to. A few years back I would watch a movie or read a book and just skim over anything that was offensive to me. Now I get so disgusted with it I turn off the TV or close the book. I wonder sometimes how they can fit so much filthy language in one sentence.

I find TV much less appealing than I used to. Now it just seems to be gratuitous violence and sexual escapades.

It also seems to be appealing to prurient interests, those of lower-IQ folk. The shows that highlight guys getting hit between the legs, or a guy falling into a pool after his bratty kid trips him - ha, ha, ha. Disgusting.

The shows with "guests" that are only there to fight each other? No, no thank you.

Like fureverywhere, I've become super sensitive as I've gotten older. Like a little kid, I'm hiding my eyes or looking away and plugging my ears sometimes during movies more and more and in general the violence that is rampant in the world just makes me horribly sad.....why can't we be kind?

Not really. Although recently I have learned not to trust people as much as I used to. I was raised that if you were nice to people, and tried your best at life, you would get along and people would like you. And that most people were what they seemed to be, and if they were nice to you at first, they would continue to be.

But recently I have learned that people are NOT always as they appear to be, and that someone who is nice to your face can stab you in the back, and that many, many people have no concept of "just being nice" and trying to get along, and believe that people who act nice to them only do so because they want something. It's all about manipulation and game-playing to them.

And since I'm not good at playing games, or, apparently, at reading people, I've started to just not give a damn.

+1, it's particularly disappointing because apparently this level of entertainment is accepted by large numbers of viewers.

When I was young(under 40) I believed that most people were good and decent, and that unethical, bad and just evil people were a scant minority.

Nowadays, my view of people(as stated above) has reversed 180 degrees.

See people getting frisky. OINB is big on that...meh, and language gets ridiculous on some programs. If I'm hearing " Beep beep beep you beep beep beep I beep beep, beep..." Turn that the Beep off it's stupid...NOW

Up until just a few years ago I blushed very easily, was offended by so much. Though cursing, dirty jokes, explicit sexual scenes in films and literature no longer embarras me....I still find them distasteful. Dislike that they have become so commonplace. Violence I still find upsetting am unable to watch or read about it.

I found out that the only real 'change' was simply becoming more liberal... Live and let live and just allow others to live and learn (just like I keep doing! :) ) I am, however, finding myself becoming more INtolerant of people who are Bible banging thumpers and damn everyone else who disagrees with their beliefs. But, I guess it 'takes all kinds'.... It would be a very weird and awful world if we all agreed on everything! "I, Robot" would be like.... scary... So Viva La Difference! :D

I have seen the worst that people have to offer, but I have also encountered amazing individuals living lives of service, others who bring warmth and love to whomever their lives touch. People whose greatest gift to the world is laughter. It is a mixed

bag. A hundred years ago, many women could not vote, have bank accounts without their husband's permission. Children
were illiterate, living in appalling conditions in tenements in North America, UK, Europe, et al. Disease and violence were

rampant among the disadvantaged, Particularly those of a non Caucasian ethnicity. In many places, Jews, Catholics, Irish were exploited terribly. Children had no rights, were abused with impunity. Things are worrisome in many areas today, but far better than in times past.

Right wing to the core and probably even more so now. I'm afraid that like it or not, you increasingly have to look after yourself. If you have worked hard, been financially prudent, obeyed the law and provided for your family, then nobody gives a damn about you.
