Health Benefits of Intermittant Fasting and OMAD (one meal a day)

Dr. Jason Fung has a book out called “Life in the Fasting Lane”, which goes into a lot of information about intermittent fasting benefits and on how to choose the best plan for each person.
It is on sale on amazon today for only $2 instead of $29. As usual, these books do not stay on sale long, so be sure to check the price before purchase to make sure it is still on sale.
I ordered it. We stop eating by five at the latest then eat breakfast around 9. Two meals a day.

I just seem to go back and forth with what way of eating works for me. Right now, I am doing the Intermittant fasting again, and that seems to be as easy as anything else to keep following.
The potato diet works fine, and I lose weight, but I got so tired of potatoes. Just doing low carb or keto is okay, except that i like veggies and salads, and do not want to cut them out either.
So, now what I am doing is a low carb eating plan, with salads and veggies allowed, and then fasting from dinner to noon the next day, with a veggie or salad meal at noon, and a protein shake made with cottage cheese and frozen in the Ninja Creami for my dinner.

The fitness center where were were going several times a week has closed down, and none of the other places nearby have a swimming pool, so I am just using the exercise bike and walking in the house for exercise, and working in the yard on nice days.

Good morning , I tried intermittent fasting but its difficult because when i get up at 3 am i need some coffee and i think the cream stop the fasting period !

Now i try to stop eating at 2/3 pm and have my coffee at around 3 am so that gives me at least 12 hours of fasting .

I tried the potato diet also and your right it does become boring after awhile

What is low carb for you ........ i try to do less than 100 carbs a day . Which is doable but i think you need to be 25g or less

I am not doing alot of exercising because i am just too tired from getting up at night ! I do the usual housework and taking care of two dogs and a husband !

I did lose some weight just watching my daily calories , under 100 carbs and praying !

Good luck ! 🤗

I have coffee in the morning, and the cream does not have many carbs in it, so it does not affect much, as far as I can tell. I do not use any sweetener.
I use the Lose It app, and have my carbs set at 50, and net carbs at 25, and usually stay close to that. And the carbs i do get are from foods like cabbage, broccoli, carrots or tomatoes, so real food that I have cooked, and not processed carbs. Plus, the cottage cheese in the protein shakes has some carbs.

As long as i am losing a little weight, am comfortable with the WOE, and am getting the body-restore happening overnight, I am good with how it is working, and do not worry about the little bit of cream in my morning coffee.
We actually do not have to be extreme low carb, from what I am reading now, just as long as it is moderately low, and from healthy foods.
Dr. Gundry has a book out about fasting and keto, and I am in the process of reading that, too.

Good morning - I'm just back after a week of seeing friends and family. Gained a pound and a half from too many desserts, bagels, breads, crappy snacks like chips and dip, and cooking that was heavy-handed with oils.

I loved seeing everyone but the foods being served were a strong reminder of how many dietary changes I've made over the past decade plus.

Before leaving town I cleared my fridge of perishable so after breakfast today I'll be hitting the produce store in a big way to replenish.

My WFPB diet is typically centered around non-starchy vegetables, fruits, salads and other vegetables. I do eat potatoes, but probably only 4-5 a week, all told. When it comes to starches, I prefer rolled oats, quinoa or brown rice, and eat flour based products (even whole wheat) sparingly most of the year.

I know it seems ridiculous to even mention a 1-1/2 lb gain, but I've learned this lesson the hard way:
When finances are tough and I watch the pennies, the dollars take care of themselves.
Likewise, when it comes to weight, if I immediately address two additional pounds, I don't have to deal with more daunting gains.

I use in my coffee the sugar free Matteo coffee sweeteners...i am trying to have less fake sweetener

I don't have breakfast til 5 am so I guess I have a few extra fasting hours ! I use the Fat secret app to record my calories etc

I tried keto but too much fat gives me problems

It's a miracle I lost weight because I have had quite a few "binging" moments ugh

I saw Dr Gundry on you tube ....very interesting

Good morning, it does NOT sound ridiculous ...I agree !

I have found that doing strict keto does not work for me either, @Katherine . I do not like having that much fat added, plus, it almost completely cuts out all kinds of veggies and fruit, which are healthy and have lots of vitamins.
I am mostly vegetarian, eat mainly veggies and only a little meat as a flavoring ingredient, which seems to work for me.
There are people who do great and eat nothing except animal-based foods, but it does not work for me. Neither did being a completely vegan, and no meat or dairy at all.

The mostly vegetarian WOE seems to fit best for me, and as long as I am careful of what carbs I add, it is working and I am comfortable with the eating plan.
The intermittant fasting seems to be the only way I can actually lose weight, for whatever reason, no matter what I eat. I think that is probably because of my age and lack of more exercise now.

Lost the 1.5 lbs I gained on vacay, plus as an unexpected bonus, an additional pound came off. So yay on being back to my preferred weight with a little wiggle room.

I'll keep a close watch on the scale over the next week to be sure the loss isn't merely water weight.

So grateful for vegetables, fruit, oatmeal, quinoa and other healthy foods prepared without added oils or fats - I sure did miss them during my week away!

Congrats! Yay

Just wondering...do you weigh yourself always once a week !

I’m with you on this one. Keto might work for others but it doesn’t work for me. I’ve been following the one meal a day and have been successful at losing weight. I drink coffee in the morning with milk but it doesn’t seem to affect my diet at all. I’ll keep on my one meal a day as a way of eating until I’m at my established weight.

That is what works best for me , too, @PeppermintPatty . I am doing mainly vegetarian, lots of veggies, and some meat/fish/cheese for flavoring, and the ninja Creami ice cream made with a protein low carb drink mix.
It is slow, but beneficial , and seems to be the only thing that works that I can actually stay on for any period of time.

I just got Dr. Gregers new book, How Not to Age, and am in the process of reading that right now. It was on sale (finally) for $2.99, so I bought it while it was on sale. It is still on sale , for anyone who is interested in reading this new book.

Thanks for the tip! I'd borrowed the print version from the library earlier this year, but it has so many internet linked articles that I knew I needed to get the ebook version.

Ordered it from Amazon a few hours ago - thanks for letting us know about this. I try to follow a lot of the advice given by Dr. Gregor (Nutritionfacts.org), Neal Barnard, MD (PCRM.org), Dr. Dean Ornish, Dr. Esselstyn, other folks at Forks over Knives, and other WFPB sources. This book was on my to-buy list.

I practiced intermittent fasting for a couple of years several years ago and have been back on it for several months now. I find it helps with caloric intake control. I'm not counting calories this time, but am aware of it, so to speak. I'm not counting, but I know, generally, the calorie content of most things from a few years of calorie counting previous.

I recently stopped having breakfast .....2 meals a day and some days a snack and stop eating around 3 pm !

At first it was difficult but getting better . I have noticed its hard to get 1000 calories a day and I am not sleeping better but could be not that reason. I need to figure out something to help me sleep ugh

Not really looking to lose weight ....just feel better !

I can't sleep during day ....just rest !

I'm doing two meals daily as well and stop eating around 6:30 p.m. I, however, am having no trouble getting 1150/1200 cals in. :ROFLMAO: Actually, if I have extra calories left over I allow myself a treat if I feel like having one.

Over the last few years I have done the Intermitent Fasting and OMAD off and on. Mentally it is a two edged sword. I do go through times where I would feel great around the 18-20 hour period (12noon - 2pm (assuming I stopped eating at 6pm). But then other days it's a chore to NOT eat first thing in the morning.

But I did lose 35 bls doing it and I faithfully tracked my weight, hours fasting every day so that I cuold look back. And when I was losing weight i found that is when I was better at fasting.

But mentally it's hard to keep it up for some reason (at least for me). I am an "All or None" type. And as soon as I fall off the wagon I totally give up for a while. Then get back at it.

Recently my wife has had issues with her pancreas and that along with my diabetes type 2 (from being overweight [still need to lose another 35-40 lbs]) we are eating better. Changing our mindset.

But if you can stick to the IF and/or OMAD it does seem to work.

I've edged away from this recently as my goals have changed from weight loss to building muscle and strengthening bones and joints.

Agree that it can be effective for weight loss and glad it's working well for you. :)

I've been on the two meals a day bandwagon for at least a couple of years now. Big breakfast around 9, big lunch around 2.
Nothing after five usually. Protein snacks to make sure we get enough.
Never perfect but most days it works. If vacationing or visiting others or having company we eat a usual three meal day.
