Helene news out of NC and surrounding mountain states is not good 9/28/24

Congratulates @Nathan and @rpg Out of your 25 combined (often vitrolic) posts comprising 20% of the thread, there are exactly 3 related to the victims. rpg showed compassion in post #3, @Nathan ...pleased to show you're finally at post #125 mentioning the victims.
Thank you for keeping track. My intent was simply to add to what was said in in post #8. rgp saw fit to attack my statement which he disagreed with.

My entire family is from the Carolinas, dating back to the mid 18th century, so I'll always be concerned about the well being of the area and peoples.

Isn't there more bad weather already on the way and likely to overrun many of the same areas already suffering?

That feels more important to me than vultures trying to pump their ("green") energy stock holdings.

There's a system stalled out in the Gulf that looks at this point as though Florida will get torrential rain for several days according to Ryan Hall who was one of the only forecasters that predicted the mountain flooding three days before it happened. At 3:46 in today's video he discusses the Gulf system.

Well, my sister and brother-in-law landed in Charlotte, got their car and headed directly to Costco to get as much water, non-perishable food, diapers, etc. as they could fit in their car to drop off at a distribution center on their way home.

She said it was like Times Square on New Years Eve. People pushing and shoving, fighting over parking spaces, etc. Humanity at its best.

I hope they made it home OK....cellphone service is out in that area.

I agree I attacked your statement, I did not however attack you.

You started us down that road in post #50 . I give what i get.

well, you must have not called the power company to disconnect , as you're still here. So when are you going to do anything , giving of yourself, to save the planet ? Like I said, lead by example .

If I let you have the last say, will you just quit derailing this thread?

I swear, every time I see news coverage about the storm and the damage, it only looks worse. I heard there are some 5-600 people still missing.

I can't even imagine losing my house and all contents, in many cases the places that employed these folks is gone, the bank is gone , no power , water sewage...

Your heart just breaks for them. I suppose all we can do is contribute in anyway we can to the rescue efforts.

My sister and B-I-L got home OK. House was OK. No power (but they have a whole-house generator), cell phone only intermittent reception, one of their trees was on/in a neighbor's porch and the thousands of dollars of dirt they had trucked in earlier this summer after a landslide is now down in the ravine, probably with more of the septic system.

But they are thanking their lucky stars they got off so lightly. And we're thankful they had a home to come home to.

A friend of mine took 3 of us for a ride in his 6 seat plane over the damaged area in NC this morning. It was heartbreaking to see the damage left behind.
Cars piled up, houses in pieces, I even saw an RV worth over $100,000 lying on its side. Trees lying all about. It looked a bomb went off.

Was that you that flew over???? Glad to hear Jujube and Laras folks are safe. We are just a few miles from Lake Lure/Chimney Rock and its total devastation around here. Of 5 ways into our community, one was flooded until saturday evening, the others washed out, with one since repaired Finally got power thurs evening, cell service yesterday and internet this morning. Personally we got very lucky, have 2 dozen trees down, but no structural damage. Its going to take YEARS for many to recover, and some never will. Confirmed death toll so far is at 220, and several hundred still missing.
The pictures and videos look bad, but its worse in person. It looked like you could walk across the lake by the damn yesterday.

I have been following everything on X, which seems to have the best news and the fastest , and reports from people who are actually living there, or helping to bring in supplies.
The reports are horrific, and way beyond what i see in regular mainstream news. They are finding children alone in the woods or in broken houses, they can’t find parents, and there are dead people in trees, buried in mud, and in cars where they drowned trying to escape.
Some of these small towns might never be rebuilt, and the larger ones are going to take years.

The good side is that so many people from everywhere are showing up to help in any way that they can. Other states have sent national guard troop and equipment, and Florida has even sent road crews and temporary bridges so that some roads can be reopened.
People all over America are sending money, but it is an overwhelming job to even just find the missing and dead people, and that may never completely happen.

Glad you got by fairly well, considering. Yes, Years. 😔
