Entering a new forum is like your first days at a new job or your first day at a new school. You come in a bit quietly, scout out the atmosphere, put out a feeler or two. Then you join in the conversation, working up to it. After you've sussed out the vibe, then you start making yourself known and find your place in the crowd.

Coming in with all guns a-blastin' away seldom gets you warmly welcomed.

But we tell new people in intro's "jump right in" - perhaps some people just jump in on the wrong foot.

I think we should give people benifit of the doubt and give them a chance. Not everyone is always good at reading the room

Go in the first day.. loud, attention seeking.. and making caustic remarks in a supposed joking manner about one of the regulars... then you're not ever going to be welcome there..

This is precisely what happened here, and there is nothing that could convince me differently. Sometimes I'm too trusting.... sometimes I'm too paranoid... but if the stench is there, by darn, I'm gonna smell it. I know it's like that for you, too, @hollydolly

I believe that since @seadoug described the circumstances, we should have given them a chance. Yes, they started strong with what they felt was amusing; if we had known them better, we would have figured it out. I read both Luce's and Hamish's intro threads, so I knew what was going on; however, other people did not. Reading Luce's comments on a few other threads, I noticed an intelligent and empathic individual. It's a shame they were both chased off the forum. They will not return because we have been so judgmental, and I don't blame them.

A few longtime members have made scathing remarks about others more than once, not in jest, and they are still here. Why weren't they put down and chased out? Their posts were reported and deleted by the administrator, yet they remain.

I like the majority of the folks here, but I also believe we need new blood. We need to offer new members an opportunity to stick around. If you dislike what someone has to say, you can easily avoid them.
