OOOOOOOKKKKAAAAYYYY then! Brace for a rant…

the last almost-24 hours has been interesting, to say the least.

Remember that radar screen shot I posted yesterday around one pm? Wellllll, around 1:45 we got weather alert of a tornado warning…. then the wind picked up and it started raining

I don’t know if we actually had a funnel touchdown but we definitely had *the* most severe thunderstorm I’ve ever been in as far as wind and rain…. Trees whipping about, raining blowing in sheets, branches down in the yard and rolling across the street to the neighbors yard…. Lost power. This went on for probably 30-40 min. When it let up some, I went out to check the yard.

Fortunately, no damage to our house. Multiple limbs down from our trees and the pine tree in our over-the-back-fence neighbor’s yard dropped a huge limb…. It took out the chain-link fence behind our blueberry bushes but blessedly missed the bushes themselves (mostly). But it gradually became apparent that our end of town took the brunt of the storm. My neighbor down the street had 3/4 of a tree down (in the road) and lots of branches down in multiple yards. The metal roof blew off the recently renovated historical theater in town. (I drove by this AM— huge pile of twisted sheets of tin on the sidewalk next to the building)

My son (Who works in a warehouse downtown—they let everyone go home early) kept encountering blocked streets (trees/ electrical wires down); it took him an hour to get home compared to usual 15 min. Drive. We picked up the yard as best we could and have quite a pile for the yard waste people to pick up.

Also noted this AM on drive to town that trees/wires still down all up and down the streets close to our end of town. We will be cleaning up for a while.

And the electricity at my house has yet to come back on. In fact, our across-the-street neighbor got a text notice from the power company that we can expect power to be restored by 7 pm tonight. So I’ll be throwing out a lot of food, sigh.

Anyway, at least we’re all safe. @Georgiagranny, did you get bad weather? I hope not. I’m sending this from our public library; I’ll check in again after we get power/net back at the house.
VERY sorry that this happened!!! And that it isn't getting fixed up quickly, now too, in your area and your home. That's dreadfully difficult!
Take care of yourself, and let us know how it's going for you!

Glad your OK!

It was a great day for walking - sunshine and moderate temperatures. It’s lilac season and when walking I can smell the scent from a distance. Even DH who has limited sense of smell anymore can smell them. Do plants become more fragrant when weather conditions are different. It was a very dry winter and spring.

Dealt with a store credit card company. They have a different bank handling their CC now. I wanted to lower the limit and they refused. After years of having a CC with this company, I cancelled it.
WoW!...they refused ?.. I've never heard of that before..I'd have cancelled too...

@CinnamonSugar or anyone whose power tends to go out, put a very small, lidded bowl of ice in your freezer. Put a penny or nickel or top and if the power has been out, you’ll know how much thawing happpened. My DD has to do this because it is common to have power outages. Sometimes they don’t know until they get home from the cottage or vice versa.

My project for the day.

After my wife was gone off early to work, I was home free. First my usual breakfast: porridge with Cocoa. Then I went on my walk with the pups. The sun was just burning off the ocean fog, and it was an absolutely gorgeous morning. I actually caught myself singing a little bit, like the birds around us. Back home, the pups got their first treat of the day. I have to keep an eye on them because they are not above trying to steal from each other. And finally, I had my well-deserved morning nap.

To make sure I won’t forget (otherwise, my wife would surely remind me on Monday morning) I went out and bought some roses. I also arranged with my daughter’s family that we’ll have a family lunch on Mother's Day. Since my daughter knows more about restaurants in our area than I am, I left it up to her to make reservations. Of course, grandpa will pay for it.

And then it was time for my main project of the day.

The water heater had been rumbling recently, and that reminded me to better flush out the accumulated calcium deposits. I had installed our current 40 gallon water heater in September 2009. I still remember, it costs $600 because of special energy-saving features, like extra insulation.

So, I shut off the water and the gas. The drainage valve (bottom left) was frozen, probably blocked by calcium deposits. I poked with a wire but to no avail. The pressure relief valve (bottom center picture, bottom right) was also frozen. So, I unscrewed the water intake pipe (bottom center picture, top left) and then finally the water was draining (bottom right picture.)

Yes, I found a handful of calcium pellets at the outlet. Hopefully, the rumbling will now stop. Then it was time to put everything back together. Easier said than done. I didn’t use enough Teflon tape screwing the water intake line back on, and it leaked. But I got it right the second time around. I also noticed that both water pipes have green mold around them where they enter the water heater. When water starts leaking, I will have to replace them as well. The pilot light still refuses to stay on. I have to wait a while and then try again. It's always a little bit fussy.

When my wife comes home from work, she can take a hot shower, with the water heater hopefully being again peaceful.

OK, the automatic igniter for the pilot light died of old age. I had to pry open a little glass window and use an old campfire lighter to lit the gas pilot light. Everything is working fine. Happy end. I just read, "Most tank water heaters have an average lifespan of 8 to 12 years." Ours is 15 years old. Any more problem, and it's time to look for a new one.

Because of our earthquakes, I want to have an earthquake gas shut-off valve installed, about $350. However, our gas heater has the only open gas light on. If our next water heater has a pilot-less gas ignition, like our house heater, then the gas shut-off valve would perhaps be superfluous.

I have done this for a long time..In my larder freezer, I have a red egg cup half filled with ice, and it has a coin on top. I always check it to see if it's melted when I go to the barn, so I'm sure there's not been an electrical outage and food has thawed and re-frozen

@CinnamonSugar All we had here was a couple sprinkles of rain during the night and right after I got to work at 4am. Then the sun came out and it's 82 right now.

@hollydolly Re Uber, I just don't like riding in the back seat of a car for an hour each way! I had nice and personable drivers again today as I have in the past so really can't complain about them. It's just the ride that seems endless...from the back seat. Ugh.

Last night was one of those "lacey" sleep nights, and I was cranky and slow at work this morning. I did get my second wind at DS's place and felt better after a nice lunch.

Now I'm all ready to hit the hay at 5pm!

Hoping that DD will take me to the garden centers after work tomorrow morning. I mean, yanno, Sunday is Mother's Day. She should take me just because it's Mother's Day weekend. Amiright?

Earlier in the day I cleaned up tne kitchen, except for the floor. But I relaxed for most of the day because my side was hurting me more than it did yesterday, so much that I could hardly stand to bend down.

The pain subsided enough by 5:30 tnat I was able to clean the litter box, sweep & use tne dustpan in the bathroom. I got all that done so that I could ready the garbage for my son to set on the curb when he returned home from his trip. I purposely made thingsmthat could be eaten off paper plates so I wouldn't have more dishes.

Another day of trying to de-stress. Was getting better but then a helicopter started circling my area, and saying stuff. I wasn't too bothered at first, but it lasted a long time. After a while, I started to wonder if it was trying to tell the residents something. I checked the news. Nothing about that, but the news got me stressed again.

More de-stressing tomorrow, I hope.

Son/grandson coming over, YAY! When her work ends my DIL will join us and we will all go out for a Mother's Day Dinner. I decided Not to join them on Sunday. Her parents would be there. I opted out of Sunday as I would have to take AccessARide and I can't think of a worse way to spend Mother's Day than deal with them. Son not available tomorrow to drive me around as he is tennis coaching his teams tomorrow afternoon/evening. So, no thanks.

I enjoy when dil's parents and I visit with them. We will have two more opportunities for that this month; once for grandson's BD party with his friends, then his actual birthday.

May is a very busy month for me. Lots of birthdays and a death day--my husband's. Lots of candles this month commemorating many events.

Do you think you pulled something, diva?
