@hawkdon See what a good night's sleep🛌💤 can do for you?

@hearlady If you'd rather have them sweet, mix some apple pie filling or even just canned apples in with the yams.

I made the pumpkin pie this morning. It sure does smell good in here!

DD took me to the garden center. The only snapdragons were more pink ones, and I already have more than enough of those, so got dianthus instead. They're already planted.

Had to go out to pick up a prescription, sat talking to an old black lady from the end of my street waiting for our turns. Lots of talk about things we're thankful for this year. She said Aldi and Walmart were nuts, too many people.

I was out, so I made another run a town over to get more of those good-sized $0.99/lb chicken drumsticks, bag of onions, some cheese, and this and that around $40 all told. Busier than when I usually go there, but not very bad.

Dropped a $20 in the Salvation Army bucket. Wandered through a lot selling Christmas trees. Lots of kids running around, I guess school is out for Thanksgiving. The guy was running a promotion: if a kid does "the Trump dance" his family gets a $10 wreath with tree purchase. Didn't seem to bother anyone. All seemed in high spirits. Every other person in a MAGA hat. Let's just say this isn't San Francisco.

Got a mailer: two "tickets" to a funeral home for a seminar on planning your death. Creepy.

Pictures of life in the outer suburbs where we are living. A shopping plaza with a supermarket is in walking distance, and 3 shopping malls are +/- 10 miles away. To the mountains, ocean, and downtown LA it's one hour; San Diego 1 1/2 hrs; Mexico 2 hrs., Gold Coast (Santa Barbara) 2 1/2 hrs., to Las Vegas 4 hours, San Francisco 10 hrs., to Canada 2 days, and to the East Coast about 3 days as drove it five times in my life (twice to Florida with my family, and boarding cruise ships departing from Miami.)

There used to be so many orange groves but most have been replaced by housing developments. On some streets, one or two rows of orange trees are remaining at the roadside, and the houses behind them are obligated to maintain those orange trees. Just a reminder how it used to be. A fruit stand in an orange grove sells a 25 pound bag of oranges for $16. Well, the prices have doubled in recent times.

A mile from our house are some fancier properties that can even afford some iron animal figures as decoration. When I walked
here with my pups, my boy had his nose on the ground till he bumped into one of those figures. He panicked and run off, LOL.

My pups get so excited when I take them with me for a ride. 40 years ago every other house had a horse, but now it has become rare.

@packleader, the pic of the fruit stand reminds me of the open air Orange Julius stand that used to be near my house in So. Cal growing up. Gee, I think a glass was 25 cents, imagine!

This morning after making my salats (prayers) I:
~ Rotated stock and refilled/ replenished supplies from bulk containers.
~ Sorted laundry. How do these things pile up so fast?!
~ Mended a slip;

This afternoon I:
~ Went downstairs and washed a double load of clothes. When I first went down it was empty and luckily only one gentleman was down there when I went to take the clothes out of the washer. He was on his way out. I’d never seen him before, but he must live here because one has to know the code to get into the laundry room. Felt kind of bad for him. He useda cane and was lugging one of those laundry/shopping carts full of clothes up all those steps. Hope he doesn’t live on the 2nd or 3rd floor!

~ Out of necessity, put away the laundry from last week and put away all the hanging clothes from today.

I was very tired when I came back upstairs, so ate a snack, finished watching Damsel (Netflix) and took a nap.

I've had a very satisfactory day, my toilet was flushing nicely (yesterday it was suspiciously slow, so I'd used the plunger until it acted normal again), I replaced the hair catcher in the shower drain (logically it must be a clean thing but somehow it seems gross to me and I feel heroic for getting it done).

Then I've done laundry and ran the dishwasher to clean up mixing bowls (except I forgot to wait to have baking pans to put in the load).

I made my once a year cranberry-orange bread, using the mini loaf silicon pans I bought from Amazon last year. Turning on the oven felt scary, but I guess my emotions were remembering last year when I couldn't figure out how to turn it on (had eventually realized the breaker needed to be flipped).

I should have been more patient (I'm guessing, I am clueless about baking/cooking) because the first loaf tore a bit coming out of its pan, but the other three loaves popped out perfectly (after I managed to wait several minutes).

My wife has this week off from work. Besides preparing our Thanksgiving dinner, she also enjoys canning (here cranberries.)

The best fruitcakes come from Texas; I am just ordering more....My wife double-checks manually my automatic blood pressure reader.

My younger wife is getting serious about retiring from work next year. As retirement present, I am buying her the new car she wants (right now she is still driving her 2010 Honda Fit with 134,000 miles on it.) She wants a red Toyota RAV4 plug-in hybrid. Both Costco and the AAA Auto Club have programs that give you discounts at dealers, like saving $2,200 buying from an AAA arranged dealer. Other dealers willI match that discount. I am spending hours on the telephone and online because no one has the red color she wants.

Our kitchen looked equally as busy yesterday. My wife was busy making Christmas puddings, at the same time I was preparing our evening meal. Not easy with so many puddings all steaming away.

She seems to make them for all and sundry, but that's my lady, generous to a fault.
Last night our phone didn't stop ringing, there were one or two pudding recipients, there was someone from our church making sure that we would be at the Christmas lunch celebration on Saturday.
Another caller was a friend confirming that we would be along to the Sunday afternoon dance. Of course, the lady is not allowed to dance yet, but she can socialise, we''ll be there.
The New Queen Pub returned our call and confirmed our table for Sunday lunch. The New Queen is not a stones throw from the dance venue, that worked out very well.
Finally, just as we were clearing away from our meal, John, my tailor from Fox Tailoring called asking if I could keep a ten am appointment today. It was previously an afternoon appointment but John is so busy he is juggling his diary in order to fit all his clients in. So ten o'clock it is, and as it's now 07:20 I had better get in that bathroom.
Have a good day.

We haven't made a Christmas pudding in years. Our Christmas cake has been baked and 'fed' regularly with brandy. We also made a batch of mince pies this week, having made our own sweet mince which is infinitely better than shop bought stuff.

Off to do some shopping in the city. We only go there a few times a year to get items we can't get locally. There's a great Asian shop where you can get just about any variety of rice, herbs, spices etc.. It also has a butchers shop where you can buy mutton, if you're OK with Halal meat.
Hopefully that will have us stocked up for Yuletide.

Paid the bill for my campervan service, MoT and repairs. I nearly fainted at the cost. It's not so much the components - they were reasonably priced, but the labour charge more than doubled the bill. It's a top class garage and I'd be reluctant to take my vehicles elsewhere, but it's 60 pounds an hour + tax. That soon mounts up.

It's sunny this morning but its a complete white out.everywhere is covered in ice.. and frost....

I've got to go out very soon to post a parcel.. another Ebay sale, ther wsie I would leave it for another day.

It's Minus -2 deg here... I've got leggings on under my jeans... and 3 layers on top.. the top sweater is fleece lined.. so I'll be warm enough...

Mince pie takes me back. My mother made those. It was one of the holiday staples in New England. But in the south it's pecan pie. I have to admit, I prefer pecan.

I'm not sure I'd want them sweet. It sounds interesting though. I might have to experiment.
My brandied cranberries came out the best this year. The more you make something the better it gets. I've been doing the sourdough for about a year. It's gone from "brick bread" to a nice hearty soft loaf with a good crust.

Son/grandson/DIL will be picking me up for Thanksgiving at her parents' main home in upstate NY. Yesterday, as I was leaving grandson, DIL burst into tears, telling me my son has been horrible lately, and rushed into my arms! Then she begged me not to tell him, which of course I would NOT. Wow. That's never happened before.

Seems my son does not want Thanksgiving this year.

I hate that holidays have become a big source of stress these days. I want to live back on "Little House on the Prairie"

Well the sun is out... but there's no real heat in it.. I had to de-ice my car... scraped the ice off, then had to leave it with the screen heater for 10 minutes, and even then it was still not very clear..

frosty morn HD.jpeg

I posted my parcel.. then drove to the next town as much to get the car engine warmed up as anything else.. then popped into the supermarket to get some extra milk so I wouldn;t have to go out for the next few days if I don't want to.. and their shelves were Bare... I mean like locusts had been in.. Even at the checkouts where all the chewing gum and stuff is , it was empty.. so I think this particular Supermarket chain, which I usually don't shop in anyway.. is ready to hit the skids... there is no way anyone going in there today could have got a week's worth of shopping.. ..the only shelves which were full stocked were sweets...

I'm back. Muffins done (and I already ate one). Dressing done. Sink full of dirty dishes . Where's the dish fairy?

We were supposed to eat at 1 today, but DD gave new meaning to "moveable feast" and hasn't told me what time it's been changed to.

It was 64 when I got up at 6 and it's windy. The temp is supposed to go down all day long and we'll get a freeze tonight. My brother in the UP is expecting 11-13" of sNOw. Better him than me! Whenever I wish that I'd gone home instead of coming here, I remember just how brutal the climate is up there.

Now it's time to get dressed and do the usual morning tidy-up.

On my early morning walk at 7 I wore my winter boots just to get used to wearing them again,it was 36 with light rain as I went around twice before breakfast. According to local weather people we're going to get some snow sometime this weekend
I'll be picking up my pre order thanksgiving dinner{ I ordered lamp chops instead of turkey} in the cafe this afternoon at 1, talk to my brother, John& his family around 3,just taking it easy for rest of the day
I want to wish everybody a Happy Thanksgiving
