How often do you buy new clothes?

I've just read an article in one of the newspapers where a self appointed shopaholic had tested herself by not buying any new clothes for a year!!

She admitted that she had far too much stuff, and was spending £1000 per month every month on clothes that were getting little or no wear!!

Many of the comments, were of the nature that not buying clothes for a year was quite a normal thing for most people, especially those on limited budgets!!

Now, I have a lot of clothes myself, I have to admit ... although I don't buy new clothing every month..nor do I send anywhere nearly as much as £1000...and since I retired last year, I don't need to buy clothing as much as I needed during my working life!!

I still like to dress relatively fashionably, and my passion is for shoes of which I have many ..but in reality as long as I didn't gain or lose weight, (aside from underwear) I could theoretically not buy new clothes for probably 5 years...

...so what about you, do you buy new clothes regularly still ? ..can you still afford to buy them as ften if you want to.., or are you happy with what you already own anyway?

I only buy new clothes is when I need to replace something that has seen it's day. I also buy something new if I have to go to a special event.

So does that mean you rarely go clothes shopping Sassy?... what about shoes?

I rarely buy new clothes as my weight pretty much stays the same, although I continue to get shorter. I shop on sale or clearance. I never pay full price. Wal-mart is my main store. I never dress up and I never have a function to attend, other than family and they come here. Yup, my life is lame, lol.

I’m not a huge shopper and don’t really like shopping a lot or spending a lot of money but if a special occasion comes up then I might spring for a new outfit otherwise once a year or more I’ll go to a second hand store like goodwill, take my old clothes and pick out some more. I’ll go on a day where everything is 50% off and come home with a new wardrobe for about $70. The selection is great . Some finds are out of this world. Lol
Note: Everything is sterilized before wearing
Of course under garments, shoes and boots I purchase new.
Shoes and purses are a different category

I'm not the 'stereotypical woman', I don't like to shop and rarely buy new clothes or shoes unless I need to replace some things. When I do shop, I get in and out quickly, I have no desire to look around for hours at things. I dress very casually every day, will buy clothes at any store, but not second hand anymore. When I was younger I used to, but with the rumors of bed bugs in used clothing and furniture these days, I go for never worn.

I buy clothes as I wear out my existing wardrobe....mostly socks, shoes/boots, and 1 or 2 jeans, each year. My wife, however, has quite a collection. She has 3 closets jammed full, and I shudder every time we are near a Kohl's. I fully expect that sometime this Summer she will take a huge pile to Goodwill, then start all over again.

I don't shop as much as I used to; it just doesn't seem as much fun anymore. I ditched all my professional clothes when I retired; I only have a few dressy things left and I think a single pair of heels. (Though I have a ton of other shoes because I have a weakness for shoes and handbags...ack.) I have a habit of finding a piece of clothing that I like, so I buy more than one to have a "backup." This has resulted in an overflow of spare clothing and I could probably go the rest of my life without clothes shopping.

I weigh the same as I did in high school. I have a dress shirt that is 43 years old, and still looks great. I bought a ton of clothes when I met the gf, as she's a clothing and shoe collector, and got me into that. As soon as I found that she never really likes to wear what she collects, I stopped buying more clothes, because I really like getting dressed up and going out on the town, while she doesn't. I have enough flash rags, now, to last several lifetimes. I buy underwear and socks, as needed, but that's it.

Only as needed. I bought a bunch of new stuff over the past few months, but it had been a while. Last time I bought so much new stuff was before I retired in 2016. I buy comfortable and functional. And not latest fashions. I do bulk of my shopping at Wal-Mart

I love shopping but do not spend as much as the woman mentioned. Mostly I look for sales on quality clothing that will last a long time but remain stylish. I like stuff that's well made and often buy seasonal items when necessary like extra sweaters during a really cold winter. Shoes cost me a bit but good shoes are important and, for me, necessary. I couldn't get through a year without buying something. Also I love to buy accessories because they can change up a look without shelling out a fortune. In short, I do like to shop, but I have some financial limitations to adhere to. :love_heart:

Not very often.

Since I stopped working I don't have to worry about power clothes or who has seen which outfit how many times, etc...

These days I dress for comfort and the old 80/20 rule applies to my wardrobe, I wear 20% of the clothes that I own 80% of the time.

I'm constantly grazing in the local thrift shops and over time I find what few items I need often times new with tags attached.

I actually suffer from sticker shock when I go into a retail store and see the prices of new clothes.

I'll always be a second hand Rose! :):playful::eek:nthego:

I buy new clothes very rarely. Too rarely, in fact. Not because I'm not willing to spend, but because I dislike going from store to store so much. But when I do go, I try to buy everything I need in one go.

I loathe shopping for clothes and shoes, however I do shop occasionally when I plan to travel to the east and west coasts. That inspires me to get few nice things each time (not much). I shop maybe 4 times a year? And I'm quick. In out. I'm done.

Since birth, I've always thought hell would be like a shoe store. With that said, I'm heading out today to pick up some strappy sandals I ordered from another store.
Wish me luck
:praying:

LOL..I wish you lotsa Luck Lara... I luuurve shoes, but I can't justify any more now, since I stopped wearing heels cuz of a back problem, (still got them all tho',) so now my passion is the sketcher's store... :D

I do donate regularly to the charity shops tho'..., and most of it has had hardly any wear at all, some even brand new because my weight goes up and down like a yo-yo...

My entire wardrobe has gone through several complete replacement cycles in the last 10 years. I had to replace pretty much everything I'd worn for years as I gained the extra 40 menopause pounds. And then when I finally resolved that weight issue and dropped 30 of the 40 pounds and leveled out, I needed to replace my overweight wardrobe. Much of those clothes I still wear, though I've noticed now that even though my weight has maintained within a 2 - 3 pound fluctuation, my body shape is slowly changing, so there are some things that fit me 2 years ago but don't now, even though my weight's the same. It's very frustrating!

I'm not the type to constantly buy new clothes. I have my favorite things, and other than changing out accessories to make the outfit more trendy I pretty much stick to what I already have...well I USED to. Now though, I'm shopping more than I ever have before, just to stay comfortable. I HATE having my attention consumed with something that's too tight, or it's rubbing here, or riding up there. Once I put on my clothes, I don't want to have to think about them again!

Shoes...now that's a whole different story lol! I LOVE shoes! I have to work hard to keep myself out of shoe stores!

So does that mean you rarely go clothes shopping Sassy?... what about shoes?

Yes I really go clothes shopping. I only go if I need a specific type of outfit for a special event. Like last year I had to go to 3 formal weddings in the same family. I couldn't wear the same outfit 3xs so I had to shop. As far as shoes go as a child my older brother was the manager in a shoe store. If me or my sister needed shoes we would tell him what we liked and he would either bring it home or take us to the store when it was closed. Now days though I just want comfy shoes so I don't have to shop that often.

We have bought me some new Cargo Shorts from Kohl's. If my wife needs new jeans, she will buy them at either Penny's or Kohl's. We also buy our jeans, Wrangler brand jeans, at a Western store. Sometimes we will stop at local Goodwill and wife will find a Sport Coat for herself.

Other than the above, we have plenty of clothes in our closet and now some of those are in Moving Wardrobe boxes.

I rarely buy new clothes but I am a sucker for the thrift shops and Good Will. I find better quality clothing there than in the stores these days. I do have a soft spot for handbags but won't buy unless it is a very good sale.
Finding great quality clothes at a price I can afford is one of the reasons I like second hand. I’m not a ‘designer only’ diva but do appreciate good quality. I’d rather have second hand than brand new but inferior clothes.

Costco has great prices for new jeans, shirts and skorts so I do enjoy purchasing from there for brand new items. You never have to worry about returns because they always accept them no matter what which takes away a lot of pressure when purchasing.

Sassy, when I was a teenager my elder brother owned a leather goods shop...handbags, purses, belts etc.. I could have a new latest fashion bag every month if I wanted one.. I remember a black box style patent one that I really loved, very similar to this...
Edit... I found the exact one that I first got from my brother when I was a teen...

I blame my brother for my addiction to bags..:D

At least once a year or more. I go to the thrift shops first, then regular stores. I hate buying shoes so I only get 2 pair every few years; a heavy shoe for winter, sandals for summer. I already have simple basic flats for dress, black and beige and sneakers which I rarely wear and have had them for years.
