If you ordered an item, and got two, would you keep it?

What if you ordered an item online, and you got two of them. Would you return one, or pay for the second, or keep it?
I ordered an item and I got two sent to me. I decided to keep it. After getting ripped off by online sellers, it felt good to rip one of them off, for a change.

(BTW, stupid double ordered and paid for two)

Something similar happened to me a couple of years ago. I ordered a pair of earbuds from Amazon and I got two pairs. I let Amazon know and they told me not to worry about it. They were cheap earbuds so I am guessing Amazon didn't want to deal with it.

On a broad scope, if it's something expensive I would probably let them know but after this experience if it is something that didn't cost much then I probably wouldn't again. If I am at the store and I do see that I wasn't charged for something I do bring it up though. Something about being in a store changes the dynamics for me.

My wife ordered a roll of dark film to put on our windows at our summer home. The company sent her the wrong shade of darkness. She called them and they told her to keep it or throw it away. They also told her to reorder the correct shade of dark. She decided to use the wrong roll that was sent since the company gave her a credit for it and it didn't cost her anything.

Yes. I figure that it all works out.
They don't reimburse me for my time and inconvenience when they send the wrong item, or it's damaged, or delayed, or often misrepresented, and I end up getting rid of it. I have spent a lot of time on the phone trying to get a live person to help get stuff straightened out, or taking stuff to a UPS drop off place, so when something goes in my favor, I feel vindicated.

Probably. Not worth the hassle to try and return. If the double item was something I didn't need, I'd donate or give away. I've never had that happen though.

If they doubled my Chewy order, I couldn't complain.

I have had that happened, but in both cases it was a company I was very happily doing business with, so I called them. Both times I was told to just keep it.

I was transferred from Louisville (Ky) to Joliet (Illinois) in 1970. We had a bigger house and needed a living room set. So we went to Sears and bought a couch, chair, matching ottoman and pillows. I forget the cost, but it was not all that expensive. Well, delivery day came and we got the set and installed it. The next day my wife called me at work and said a TWO more sets were delivered and sat in the garage.

I was not happy with my wife for accepting them, but she said the truckers begged her to take them as they were on the back of the truck and in the way of other deliveries.

I called Sears and the first response was "that's impossible". I began to wonder if we were charged for them and it took a few days to determine that we were. I had to go to the store and get to an asst mgr who believed me that I hadn't ordered three sets. In a couple days they came and picked up the extra sets.

Ok, I won't lie here..... the extra pillows (4) and two ottomans were "accidently" left with us, and we enjoyed them.

Happened twice I can remember off the top of my head, in over 70yrs
Once was Amazon and once was Duluth Trading Co.
When contacted as it occurred, each told me to keep the items
Neither were big ticket items
So yes I got a freebie but it was their choice
And both companies have made good coin off me before and since

Yes! Not sure if you noticed but recently resellers have not been requesting a return of items for any reason, wrong size, color, item, etc.. They say no, go ahead and keep it, we'll send the corrected order. Also, due to the cost of handling returns, they are discussing doing away with them altogether except maybe for very high dollar items? :coffee: Don...

My buddy ordered an electric log splitter last fall and when it arrived it had a broken fitting. The company said they wouldn't send just the fitting but would replace the splitter and he would need to return the old one. He still has the original, the replacement showed up quickly, they made two attempts to set up a return but the company never followed thru. He asked me what to do and I told him to keep it, I'll change out the broken fitting for him and he can give it to one of his kids.

This wasn't a $10 item, he said it cost around $650 with tax and shipping. Nothing like that has ever happened to me, I don't believe I've ever received two items by mistake.

I have. I ordered 3 pairs of sweatpants and when I got a notification saying they were delivered, but they weren't, I complained to the company. They refunded my money and I ordered another 3 pairs from a different company. They arrived about 2 days after the first 3 pairs did.

I don't know why the first order was delayed for like a month, but I got a 2-fer, and I'm ok with that.

Generally when I've reported receiving something in error, or a duplicated order, the company will say, "just keep it." It's really more trouble than it's worth to them to make the changes to the Accounts Receivables system, and insert it back into the supply chain, and then put one single little item back into a giant warehouse! Seen from their standpoint, it makes sense....I usually put it in the Goodwill piles.

The last time, I ordered an expensive seat cushion - and the company accidentally sent me one BOX, which held 6, not just one seat cushion! I contacted them and they sent me a ppd label to return the other 5 cushions.

A couple of weeks later I was informed by my credit card bank that the company had refunded the entire cost of the one seat cushion I had kept, plus shipping - obviously as a 'thank you'! I thought that was a great deal on both ends - those cushions were almost $60/ea.

Did have this happen. Have a friend who does not have Amazon, and I sometimes will order things for her. She pays me and I send them to her address. One time she ordered a little T shirt for her grand daughter, She got two. I double checked my order and DID order just one. Oh well LOL

That never happens to me. But once I ordered a small rug for the bathroom from Amazon. What arrived was what looked to be a living room size area rug. I definitely did not need that. But neither was I going to take it to the post office, or USP or wherever. It's still in it's plastic wrapping the way it arrived.

If I was buying it in person, and had two (whatevers) handed to me, I'd definitely give one back. And I'd check to make sure they hadn't charged me for the second one.

If it was from Amazon, say, and arrived in the mail, I'd probably keep the second one, just because it would be a certain amount of trouble to drive to the return place to give it back. It was their error, not mine, so I think the appropriate thing would be to keep it and donate it to a good cause.
